Maher on SEN announcing Westhoff to be AA this year........

This off-season has really got to some peoples heads.
Won't be far from it IMO. Thought between he and Schultz, I cannot believe that players can get so much better than where they were a couple years back. Credit to port for that.

Murphy looks beyond the blue horizon

The problem was partly one of Marc Murphy's making. So consistent for so long that when his form betrayed him last year the only real variable to explain it was that he had become captain and couldn't cope.

Which also provides proof that football might be a simple game but one that is best not distilled to simple assumptions.

Murphy had a knee injury last year that meant if he did everything right – trained only once a week and managed his pain – he would get himself fit enough to play games. He was not fit enough to play games the way he had ordinarily played them – he lacked the customary power in his run – but he was able to get out there. Well, until he broke a cheekbone. That was a setback, but not one that set him back as long as it should have.

Did anyone happen to get the AFL magazine that came with the Herald Sun today? Apparently there is an extensive interview with Daisy. By the time I went to buy the paper today they had sold out of the magazine. Anyone hear get to read it?

Top four is easy to predict except for one

Sydney, Hawthorn and Fremantle are everyone's box trifecta this year but the fourth estate is having great difficulty in ranking the fourth team of 2014.

Moreover, it's not just the media that is struggling to round out the top four. In their annual market forecasts, the AFL captains named only three teams (besides their own) that would make the grand final. Result: Hawks 10 votes, Sydney 5, Freo 3. That is an extraordinary conformity, in a competition with margins slighter than Josh Bootsma's shoulders.
Seems Boots is getting ridiculed in general media now... not cool.

I might be biased but I struggle to think of another club with a more obvious disliking by the media. Even when we so well it's usually the opposition that underperformed. Annoys me but all the sweeter if they're proven wrong.

Buy today's Herald-Sun and get a free Daniel Jackson poster. Newspapers are great for your birdcage or drying your windows.

Tried to get my cousin in Vic to get me that herald sun footy guide. Unfortunately she's as useful as tits on a bull and forgot

Did anyone get one and was it worth reading? Couldn't get it in Sydney unfortunately :(

Jake Niahl just received an email...

Dear Jake,

I believe you've shown very poor form in making fun of the physical characteristics of a person in order to make your point. It may be reasonable to challenge him on his game play, or his defensive abilities; you know, something related to his prowess as a footballer. However, it is not reasonable to make a pejorative statement about his shoulder width.

I wonder how you would feel if, when critiquing this piece of your work, someone made the statement, “Jake demonstrated, in his poor decision to make fun of the physical characteristics of a player, that his ideas cupboard is as bare as his head.”

Surely you hold yourself to a higher standard than this. Embarrassing.

Regards,

Jake Niall's unbridled hatred... ;)

Given Garry Lyon tipped us to finish twelfth today, I'm happy if we slide under the radar.

"Easily the fittest tall bloke that we've got at the club."

Would be something if Levi is fitter than Henderson, Waite and Kreuzer who are mobile and have good endurance.

I can see Watson building his endurance like Casboult who is also a man mountain.

Kudos to Jake Niall who had the decency to reply to my email.

........ ,

I'm not sure Josh Bootsma would even be aware of the slight, so to speak, or that it would upset him much. Perhaps I could have used another analogy - I sought a football-based one. Perhaps ''slighter than Josh Bootsma'' would be better than a reference to his slight shoulders, because he is slight of build everywhere and a generic comment is less pointed.

Comments about a person's slight build, fyi, in my experience, don't create resentments and aren't viewed as perjorative in anything like the same way that many other descriptions are - eg, fat/obese/bald (I happen to be bald), ugly. Matthew Lappin, known as ''skinny'', could have been used. Paul Chapman's baldness is often noted, along with Gary Ablett's.

Rest assured, I receive more than my share of slights - and outright abuse and have been held up to ridicule often enough.

Thanks for your email. Regards,

Jake Niall

To which I replied...

Hi Jake,

I appreciate your response.

I will say that it is my experience that we often don’t know what a person feels self-conscious about or what they find most disturbing about their appearance. You may well be right and it might be a long bow that I’ve drawn, however it’s possible, at least in my mind, that Bootsma’s slightness might be something he doesn’t feel all that comfortable about, especially considering the expectations put upon him by the Carlton faithful, and his inability, at this time, to meet them.

You draw comparisons to Matthew Lappin, Paul Chapman and Gary Ablett. Each of these men were/are, at the very least, great players, and so I suspect they might be a little more confident that statements about their appearance are not representative of their footballing ability. Needless to say, Bootsma’s slightness, and what appears to be his consequent inability to successfully use his body against his opponent, may well be a point of concern/embarrassment.

I am prone to over analyse, as is my want. Perhaps he is as thick skinned as they come and your comment would not even raise an eyebrow. But he doesn’t appear overly confident and, as a young man who has not established himself in this cutthroat vocation, being the punchline may not help.

All that being said, I do appreciate your willingness to address my concern.

Regards,
