Pilates gets Waite back up and running after injury problems in 2012

CARLTON forward Jarrad Waite has turned to the pilates mat to help correct the abdominal weakness at the heart of his debilitating back problems last year.
After a nightmare injury run, the Blues' spearhead resisted the temptation to shoulder only light pre-season duties this summer, saying his training load had been "full-on" since day one.

The secret to his recovery, Waite said, was twice-weekly pilates sessions to strengthen the core muscles which hampered his return from a disc problem last year.
"My core wasn't the strongest (and it) basically put a lot of force through my back and then it just sort of gave up," Waite told the Herald Sun.
"It was very disappointing because I've had a frustrating few years with the hips and it will be good to get through a season without any issues.
"Obviously a lot of rehab and pilates keeps my core strong which in turn helps my back out.
It (pilates) is going well and it's something that I enjoy doing."

Blues to roll out the barrel
Brown described Watson as "a magnificent kick". The 1990 Collingwood premiership player rated the 20-year-old alongside former Magpie teammates Peter Daicos, Doug Barwick and the Rocca brothers as one of the longest kicks he had been involved with.

Brown said Watson was "pretty consistent and accurate" with his torpedo attempts, but believed his drop punts travel almost as far.

The Blues are well endowed with capable designated kickers, with Watson, Tuohy and the likes of Kade Simpson, Chris Yarran, Michael Jamison and Lachie Henderson providing different skills for every occasion.

Yarran's beautifully timed kick-ins against Brisbane hit the centre square and teammates 70 metres away.

Blue skies

"Mick's been good. Most people look at him and think he's really mean, they're scared of him, but he's a smart man and the way he's trained us has kept us all fresh. He said to me, 'I want you to bulk up a bit and work on your running', and I was pretty happy to take that on board," he said.

"The biggest thing is getting the endurance right, because I've hated that. I could never really run because it would get in my head and play with my head, but the more you train to do it, the more confident you get that you can do it. It helps, so I'm happy to give it a go.

from blue skies article:

"As much as he loves the forward pocket and is not keen to be dragged out of there for too long Malthouse has other plans – and not just for him. Malthouse has several players, including Betts, that he wants to send into the centre square – he wants most of his players to run through the midfield this year. For his part, Betts has dropped some body fat, worked on his endurance and convinced himself that running isn't always a horrible thing to do."

While not starting in the centre square, Eddie drifted into the midfield a few times last year with great success. Eddie used the same instinctual magic that enables him to gather a tumbling ground ball in the forward line, steady and slot a goal. It is this skill that puts Eddie in the elite small forwards category. Perhaps Eddie can have a similar burst impact as Cyril Rioli. Cyril has a fair bit more speed on the burst, but their are few better the Mr Betts at working through heavy traffic during general play (ie: not at stoppages). I was really impressed with how Eddie used the ball once he'd gathered from these situations. He was able to assess option and either hand it off to a player running past or sum up the movement up forward and set up a player on the lead.

Cyril seems to be able to play both inside and outside at stoppages. Eddie obviously caould handle the outside stuff but not sure how he'll go in the bash and crash of inside clearances?
