If Judd retires, we should throw the farm at Buddy.
True. But if Buddy does leave Hawthorn (which I don't think he will) it would probably be to go home to WA. Can we really top the Hawks 1+ mil offer without sacrificing our own?

Thomas wouldn't cost as much as Buddy and we will help us in maintaining our midfield as Simmo, Carrots, Judd etc get older/retire.

Last year we delisted JR, Thornton and Bower. Probably around 500k freed up right there.

This year Scotland will probably retire, and we can throw Carrots on the Vets list. Another 300k saved.

Assuming Scotland retires, we are have a spare 800k (not including the larger salary cap this year) before even looking at sacrificing one of our own.

If Judd retires, we'll easily have the money for Buddy.

With loose change left over.

As unlikely to walk as Cloke.

Everyone assumes Franklin is after more money when he reportedly loves playing with Hawthorn.

Even if Buddy leaves and in the unlikely event he chooses Carlton over returning home, the Hawks could match our offer and force a trade to receive superior compensation. They would ask for Murphy (need a younger A grade mid), Henderson/Kreuzer and a late first round pick/Watson. We'd have to clear out their contracts and rip out the team's spine (figuratively and literally) so we could afford Buddy.

Meh.

The club doesn't need another big money messiah to turn the club around and get us off our knees like we did six years ago.

Gerard Healy and Dwayne Russell were running with this dumb story last night. Just like they were going on about Cloke to Carlton last year.

We didn't have the cap space to sign Tippett by backloading the contract.

I think that Waite will also be considering his options come the end of the season if he has another injury interrupted season. While he is a very loyal son of the club, I think that if he gets injured again this year, he might just consider throwing the towel in for the good of the club.

And that will be another 350k right there I think.

Clearly he wants more money.

They have a contract ready for him to sign right now at 900k plus special marketing.

There is literally no other reason for him to delay his contract talks to the end of the season other than pushing for more money!

No they couldnt match our offer. Their salary cap pressures are well documented.

We freed up 500k from our cap last year (Thornton, JR and Bower). Assuming Scotland retires this year and Carrots goes on the Vets list, we free up another 300k.

To raise the extra cash, Judd would need to retire (freeing up another million including his ASA which is now included in the cap and Marketing allowance). Then we would have around $1.5 million PA to offer Buddy + Marketing.

Waite is on the way out too (and isnt the most reliable of blokes even when available). Thats another 350k. Carrots and Simpson dont have long left either.

The club doesn't need another big money messiah to turn the club around and get us off our knees like we did six years ago.
In addition to his obvious elite footballing talent, Buddy is the most marketable face in Footy.

Membership and Sponsorship would skyrocket. He'd pay for himself.

Buddy only becomes viable if we either trade out (Gibbs + third Ruck) for picks (spent on Mids to replace Judd, Scotland, Simpson and Carrots) and free up cap space to accomdate Franklins contract, or if Judd retires (where we will be able to match any Freo or Hawthorn offer, and still have cap space to spare).

Kruezer could play stay at home forward resting while Buddy pushed up the ground.

How amazing would a Franklin, Betts, Garlett, Walker, Menzel forward line look?

Now I need to change my pants again.
With Levi smashing packs wide open and putting the fear of god into any defender who thinks about parking in front of him on the lead... It'd be worse than Fev hitting a pack

Or just park Levi in the square, and have Franklin roam up the ground.

Make it happen.
I like having Levi leading out of the goal square and smashing into packs and either bringing down the ball locked in those hands of his or causing the opposition defender to brick himself, drop the ball which then allows Jeppy or Fast Eddie to scoot in and snaffle the ball.

And if we dont get Franklin, I am going to hazard a guess that over the next 12 months, Mitchell will finally start getting some games in the seconds, work on his core fitness level and come out next year smashing it up as our lead up CHF :D

Walker - Franklin - Garlett
Betts - Casboult - Menzel

or

Walker - Mitchell - Garlett
Betts - Casboult - Menzel
Either one of those forward lines if it happens would be damned exciting

If we dont gt Buddy, we are going to struggle to pay the full Cap.

Judd, Scotland, Waite, Carrazo, Simpson are all nearing the end.

Which is worrying in and of itself.

Judd - 2-3 years depending on how he feels about things. If he suddenly decides that the isnt enjoying his football anymore, then he will put the cue in the rack.

Scotland - More than likely gone at the end of this year

Waite - If his body doesnt want to keep it together for the next 12 months, I suspect that he will put the cue in the rack as well.

Carrazzo - Once again, I think that he has 2-3 years left before he decides to put the cue in the rack

Simpson - Will do a Bradley and just keep going and going... a bit like the energiser bunny.

With the amount of mids it appears is going to be in the free agency arena next year, we may well be able to pick up a couple of them if we dont go for Buddy.

I am thinking that we may have 4-6 players going at the end of the year... so how about we just revisit the whole free agency/trading thing after the last weekend of Sept...

And think about how good the club is going to be this year if we can keep our best 22 on the ground for more than 3 weeks.

We're looking at around $2.5 million in salary with those 5, most of whom wont be playing in 3 years, with the remainder as Veterans.

Murphy's next deal will be huge and Betts and Walker would be on a bit. Gibbs and Kruezer wouldnt be pushing big figures.

Reckon we could pretty safely backload a pretty massive offer for Franklin.
