I wonder if the book is just are add on to the previous book. I find it hard too think that 10 years would have 750 pages .

The current major production nearing completion is Volume 2 of The History of the Carlton Football Club The Blue Boys Vol 2 recording the tumultuous times of the club taking up from where Volume One left off. Same quality, size and even more history from the past. If you want to be advised when this publication is available email your name and address and you will be eligible for our proposed advance pre-launch release delivery volume.

 Not a fan of this project. I'll probably look into purchasing it but would wish that the club would hold off on these types of publications until we win #17. The next history of Carlton book should finish with the sweet taste of victory.

Strictly my two cents.

I know what you mean, but we don't know when the 17 will happen and if it happen after it another book will get published. We don't really know in 10-20 years if books and CD/DVD will exist and if they do it will be for premium prices and a luxury item. I like others would never pay for PDF or mp3 files and read as well as listen to it on a Ipad or other annoying media it's not the same.

Going back to this book, i like it but i wish they had more Color in the book and some larger photo if available. I hate reading so much text especially near 1000 pages and looking at the flag years especially and they just put a small photo of the club team shot. I wish they have head shots or action shot of each player in the flag years, the size of a footy card. This is what i call a History book, so people know the face and history of the player and have a type of souvenir of the club history. I guess it would be nice if Every player who played a game had his photo and stats on it, but that's possibly impossible due to no photo and too much work.

It was a little disappointing seeing the Blue Heaven – A celebration of Carlton's 16 magazine being very thin on photos. I was expecting nice glossy photo of the later years from 1979 onwards. I like too see Carlton come out with a book like Our Great Game, The Photographic History of Australian Football, coffee size book.

I really hope this is not an attempt to address our decade from hell. Far too raw, far too many stakeholders still around.

1. You can not give an unabashed account of what went down over those years while Sticks is still President. No doubt he had to be involved in decisions, both good and bad.

2. Any such publication will no doubt bash Elliot, Collins, Smorgon, Diggins and a few others as we endured scandal after scandal and upheaval after upheaval.

The last thing we need is to dredge up painful recent memories while we are on the up. Let some more dust settle. We don't need 'I told you so' coming out of our ears.

The last book was comprehensive, and covered 138 years or so. Not sure of the merits of a sequel only a decade later. A book about specific aspects of Carlton, no problem. A Part 2 history book that picks up where we left off is migraine material.

I'm not sure but I have bought books like The Complete Directory to Prime Time Network and Cable TV and The encyclopedia of AFL footballers that are just updates when they become Vol 1, then 2 and onwards. The painful recent memories will be on it as it's part of the history as long the writer doesn't push the blame game to hard as older players, former coaches, Directors and Presidents may get upset on the upheaval and scandal blaming one another.

The book looks completed by that link so I really doubt they pull the plug after all the work going into it. I would have rather seen a Photographic History of the Carlton Football book, similar to the Great Game, The Photographic History of Australian Football.

Really glad this thread has come up.

I'm looking to purchasing a book on Carlton's history but I'm not sure which one is best as there are at least 3 that I know of with them being...

The Blue Boys
Out Of The Blue
The Old Dark Navy Blues

Any suggestions and recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

I have the Blue Boys. It is the must have purchase. As close to the bible as you are going to get.

I also have the Old Dark Navy Blues. Nowhere near as thick but it is still a decent read.
There are a lot of books on the history of the CFC. Blue Boys wins on volume but would be near the rear in terms of accuracy.

My suggestion is buy as many books as you can read them all, form your own opinion and if you have the chance discuss aspects of our history with people who played for and worked for the club.

History can be a maleable beast unfortunately, but there are certain facts that can be obtained if multiple trusted sources are used.

I'm guessing that's because journos write their own versions, and if they have a source at the club, they see things via their own reign. Blue Boys was written under Elliot's watch IIRC so I do get your point.

The first century of our existence is what really captured me.

I am the same, luckily we have at least 8 or 9 book which cover this era. Luckily this is the part of Blue Boys which is less effected by politics, anything from the 1970s onwards needs to be taken with a grain of salt.

More books will be written over time and our interesting history from the 1970s onwards will eventually be dealt with from all angles.

There is 3 books every Carlton supporter should get a hold on, one is The Blue Boys. The other 2 are The Mighty Blues - Team Of The Century that has a lot of details and photos of best players for each decade about 156 pages published in 2001. The real best one was Carlton The 100 Greatest showcasing 100 Carlton players in details with photos along with how they were recruited, etc, 412 pages, published 1994 by Russell Holmesby and our good mate Jim Main (cough cough) Inside Footballer writer.

The Old Dark Navy Blues I have, but it lacked structure of sorts. I think they could have made it a little more exciting to read. Out Of The Blue I haven't purchased but may get it through the club if still available. I put it off as the last time I ordered a AFL book it got dented through the mail. People need to realize it will come damaged through mail when shipped, they need to put some protection on the corner of the book.

Check also on ebay every now and then to get Carlton Centenary Review published in 1964, that has full of interesting history and nice full black and white full page photo shots of Sergio Silvagni, Gordon Collis, Harry Vallence, John Nicholls, Bruce Comben, Doug Beasy, John James, Bill Milroy, Ken Hands, Jim Park, Arthur Hodgson, Jim Clark, and Ollie Grieve.

Been a while since I read it, but yeah I do remember there being a fair bit on George Harris, turmoil over a few years in the late 70s and the Elliot era of course. They really covered a lot of unnecessary stuff during this period when they could have allowed more space for preceding years.

The Blue Boys is one of the worst written history books of all time, as bad as pretty much everything by Brian Hansen. Full of hyperbole and blatantly wrong material, picture credits etc.

The best by far is The Old Dark Navy Blues. Written maturely and without bias. Could do with more pictures though.

This new project will no doubt be appallingly written and centres on an era we'd all prefer to forget. Wait for number #17. Having said all that, I'll buy it anyway.

Just recently got Out Of the Blue. So far it awesome, the first page where Fitzpatrick talks about "what it is to Carlton" gives me goosebumps every time I read it. Brilliant stuff. Don't have the other two. Might have a look. Not the greatest reader.
