Carlton have just delisted Trent Hotton, Sam Cranage, Sean O'Keefe and Lindsay Smith.

Surely the delisting of Smith and Hotton is a sign that Carlton will indeed re-sign Matthew Allen or trade for a Keating/Street.

Not even Carlton would go into an AFL season with only two pseudo ruckman (McKernan and Merrington)

No surprise on Smith...Pagan didn't think he could turn him into a senior footballer when he was at Arden Street, so little would have changed during Smith's time at Pigs Arse Oval.

True.

Just thought Pagan may have waited, at least until they had some idea of their potential ruckmen, before delisting both their current rucking options.

Two dud ruckmen are better then none.

I would think that Pagan will be working to convince Allan to stay and he'd be hoping that McKernan will continue on with his 2002 form and be used as the relief ruckman.

Also, by doing these delistings right away, he's put everyone at Carlton on notice - there will probably be a few more delistings and a couple of names thrown around as trade bait by the time the trading period begins.

I think that if he can't convince Allan to stay, he'll be looking at trading for someone - not sure what's out there, but whilst most clubs first ruckmen are untouchable, he'll go for a second string ruckman like Ben Marsh from Adelaide. When it comes down to it, a second string ruckman with regular game time is a better proposition than someone who won't make it (Smith) or someone who was only used as a last resort (Hotton).

You'll notice that Street got a few games for geelong towards the end of the season at Geelong, that would probably have been to inflate his value slightly.
Cranage also received some Brownlow votes in some of the last rounds, so that should help whatever's left of his career.

I dont know. In effect thats all they had this season anyway.

Still like Shinners said, Pagans making an early statement I guess. The old 'shape up or ship out'. The Blues would be hoping like hell that those salary cap breaches amount to nothing (i.e no penalty exclusisons from the draft).

I guess though they must have some replacement in mind to carry the ruck. Havent Port and Williams said that French, Brogan and Lade are all on the market for the right price? Probably some behind the scenes talk going on as well.

I disagree. Dud ruckmen are dime a dozen. John Nickols could come back and do as well as the two delisted players in question. They may as well try a new kid or get a reject from another club as persist with someone they know will not get them anywhere. If they were a premiership threat it may be a little different and they may play it a little safer but that would be counter productive right now.

Carlton MUST cut deep. They must clear "handy" players and turn over kids and rejects in order to rebuild a list. Some favorites will have to go by the wayside. There is absolutely no point in keeping players who are not premiership material. Every single player in that catagory who is at the club right now has to go in the next 2 years. If that means they get worse before they get better then that is what they have to do.

If Elliot stays it will not happen. I have heard him say that with the returns from injury and draft choices etc they will be in the finals. That attitude is why they finished last.

I think this would be a bad idea. Most people will tell you that the WORST place to play McKernan is in the ruck. If anything is going to lose him his confidence, it's that, and that's the LAST thing you want...

Oh dear oh dear, looks like the Pagan/McKernan merry go round might be starting again!

LOL and Hotton was at Southland the other day, the flyer said "meet Trent Hotton, AFL Star" or somthing along those lines. He was at going to be at the AFL Shop when the Premiership Cup was there.

He isn't an AFL 'star' anymore. Bye, bye traitor.

It could be worse. There was an advertisement in the local paper for an AFL show at Waverley Gardens with one of the advertised 'stars' players appearing being...... Nick Stone!

At least Hotton one decent season of AFL football (2000), Stone has barely played a one decent AFL game.
