Excellent news!

THE Carlton Football Club will field a standalone reserves side for the first time in 19 years when a new-look, second-tier competition resumes in 2021.

An announcement made today by the AFL will see 22 teams form the 2021 VFL and East Coast Second-Tier Competition, with clubs to be based in New South Wales, Queensland and Victoria

I assume this is good news as it allows us more control to develop our reserve players?

I look at Richmond where their reserves play exactly the same way as the seniors and players get to learn roles there...then when called upon to the AFL team they play the exact same role and are able to contribute.

EDIT: Begs the question why didn't we do it sooner...just a money issue? Couldn't get a spot in the VFL?

Agree with the positive sentiments above. A great opportunity to build team chemistry and with less of an influx of youth coming in this year (and hopefully fewer injuries), we should have a more mature side that is competitive most weeks.

Also good that they should hopefully play at PP every second week and the young guys get some practice travelling interstate.

Hope we draw Aspley at home so we can see the resumption of clashes with a traditional rival

End of 2015 was the sinking of the old Titanic.

Congratulations to everyone along the 5 year journey in now delivering the supporters a professional AFL Club.

As a cumulation of those 5 years.....We are now back in the game.

And what a time we will have over the next few years. So proud to see this football club up and about again. Destination club.

It also occurs to me that having what will likely be 3-4 trips north of the border will make for much more pleasant playing conditions than a windy day at Cramer St. Much better practice, particularly for our forwards.

Been wanting this for years, love it!! Now it’s time to get the coaching structure around it right...

** no offence to Northern either, glad to see them back up and about

Definitely an interesting comment in the press release by Brad Lloyd in regards to the streamlining of the football department, in particular the coaching area.

This year we had a Head of Development (Luke Power) and 2 development coaches (Daniel O'Keefe - def & Jason Davenport - fwd). I think Davenport was even stood down during COVID shutdown and I'm not sure if/when he resumed. We never bothered to fill Stanton's old role of midfield development coach when he was promoted in the reshuffle after Bolton's departure.

Hopefully this announcement means we can begin shuffling our assistant coaching ranks.

Would Luke Power be head coach of the VFL team as he is the Head of Development, or will we hire a designated VFL coach - replacing Josh Fraser's position?

Huge positive step in regards to development. Means young mids like Dow, Stocker, Philp and Ramsay will be able to develop with proper midfield time instead of competing for scraps after guys like Frank Anderson, Sam Fisher and Tom Wilson get priority.

Absolutely agree PD, will be interesting to see

I’d personally like Power to liaise with a full time dedicated 2’s coach, frees him up to be around the AFL boys as much as possible, which can only be a good thing

Whether that’s doable after what Lloyd said only time will tell...
