Bit surprised about the comments re. Hendo's kicking. His kicking from the back-half was outstanding last year. He's a huge penetrating kick, with a very sound technique and also excellent with the short-range precision stuff which is probably even more essential for a defender. We've got ourselves an outstanding CHB here. And he's not just a spoiler. He aggressively counter-attacks at every opportunity.

:)

^ This.

Expect him to do a lot more rebounding this year as his confidence builds, a la Jamo. Chris Scott said some interesting things to Mark Robinson in the HUN the other day, one of which was that defence is the overwhelming focus of coaches but defence is where you attack from these days. We all know that a good rebounding HBF is a potent attacking weapon...Yaz!...but when your big guys rebound as well you have an arsenal. Hendo with his skill, athelticism and size is a massive plus for us as an attacking KPD.

Do carlton have open training sessions? i am keen to go watch but cant really find any info on it.

Are you referring to Ricky Henderson or Lachie Henderson? ;)

There would be just half a dozen or a dozen KPP in the AFL who can kick like Matthew Watson.

Henderson has a penetrating and accurate kick.

Some of our mids and flankers aren't as clean as Lachie. :o

Sure does, seen him kick some rippers outside fifty

Was awesome to get down from Sydney to my first training sesh on friday. The boys looked good. And MC's pics really tell the tale beautifully. No wonder you need a monopod with that massive lens MC!

A couple of observations:

Rucks - Warnock spent all session as ruckman - mostly practicing with the mids, Kreuzer didn't stand out too much and was soundly beaten to the tap by Hampson in a couple of the drills, Hampson spent alot of time working on his forward work - timing of leads, doing multiple leads, positioning etc. Looks like he might see a fair bit of forward time this year barring injuries.

Walker - is just a perfectly tuned machine, seems to have the right amount of muscle to retain his speed, but enough strength in the clinches. Was kicking goals from all angles and could hardly miss. In match simulation he literally ran rings around his opposing backs (eg. Davies - who was way too loose). His speed off the mark and ability to twist and turn to create space and get a few metres off his opponent was impressive. Watch out - this year he could be anything!

Bootsma - others have said it before but I was impressed with his kicking depth ... AND accuracy. Not quite up to Walker standards but got most of his shots at goal and looked super reliable.

McInnes - doesn't get much airplay as he probably isn't getting the ball enough yet, but has a very strong, mature looking physique. Could follow in the JR mould.

Touhy - looks like he has played 100 games already, very strong, composed, tough competitor, mature body. Expect to see him be more prominent in the stats and more regular games in 2012.

Jamison - did most of the session and couldn't fault his application and commitment, but noticed he took the odd break from the main group in some drills. Anyone know if he is nursing some injury?

Thanks guys for all your reports and pics - vital for a Carlton tragic stuck in Sydney and starved of info/contact. (Still can't believe we still don't play in Sydney in 2012, despite now having 2 teams up there - outrageous!).

Great report B2012. Good pick-up re Jammo too. :thumbsu:

More than welcome to venture down to civilization and furnish us with reports any old time mate. ;)

Whatever? Henderson does not have a penetrating kick!!!! Fact. Lucky to kick fifty metres last year. Had a good season never the less. Probably kicks longer and straighter than you ever have though, so to you he may have a penetrating kick.

I'm not having a go at Lachie, I think he is an essential part of our future Premiership side. What I'm saying is last year and the year before he was...and is not now a penetrating kick. FACT. Hense being placed in the backline, rather than marking balls on the fifty and bombing them home.Do you even watch football? Seriously.

His kicking style is more of an up an under style, not penetrating. Say what you want but you really have know idea.

7:10 of that video.

Plenty more examples but that is the best of them

More of them here. The better ones are past the 5:00 minute mark

If that's the best example you can find, then you're struggling. A kick from 50 that just cleared the line. Most players in the AFL could manage that distance.

Hendo's one of my favourite players but while he loves to kick it long, he doesn't get great penetration on his kicking - at least not to the point to classify him as a penetrating kick. What he does do is run forward with the ball then kick to a long target, which might give the impression that he's a penetrating kick.

Hell, I'm not sure I'd classify Bryce Gibbs as a penetrating kick. One of the most effortless and accurate kicks of the footy in the league and can roost it a very long way but he places the ball to his teammate's advantage rather than spear it onto their chest.

We must have different definitions on penetrating. I see it as simply making a long distance. Clearly you guys see it as doing so from a low angle and with great force. In which case, Henderson isn't a penetrating kick, but is a long kick who can bomb the ball 50+.

Welcome to big footy - was watching henderson struggle in the Ants forward (were you there, Im sure you were ?) could hardly get a touch, was sad to watch, it was like he was only 5 foot tall - confidence. Moved him into the back line and it was like he was reborn. But thats always been his nature one week its like hes the only player on the ground and the next week - no one home.

We were desperate for some decent back options with people going down like flies - and so he was tried there.

And THAT is why he got moved - pretty sure it had **** all to do with the fact the guy cant kick - FACT.

I wouldn't classify him as a long kick, either. He kicks it long but line up each and every player on the list and I don't think he'd kick it much further than the average. However, few men his size would cover as many metres coming out of defence, when you consider that he runs hard with the footy and loves taking on the opposition.

I think people are being pedants. The Buckley worm burners are exactly that, being low and direct is no more penetrating than kicking the ball 70 meters onto a guys chest - the term penetrating comes from penetrating their defences - so basically it has to be direct - there is a tendency for people to think of that only as low trajectory kicks, but penetrating kicks come out of defense as well - its all about finding a target. If your lobbing a ball 50 meters to a pack -then no, not very penetrating, if you're lobbying in 70,80 meters from defense and clearing the zones, then yes, penetrating.

Its a pretty simple word.

Looks good to me, could be in for a break out year Lachie

changing the topic here, but how has russell been travelling over the PS? i have read quite a few reports and it just seems that he hasn't been doing anything exceptional to seperate him from the rest (maybe that doesn't make a difference as it's only ps). personally i see him moving onto a hbf possie or playing a shut down role to free up yarran. where do people see him fitting into our team?

He is super fit and has that zip back that was missing last year because of hip surgery...

Expect him to get back to that 'general' in defense role as well as pushing up the field for spells...

Classic Hendo kick. Cleared 50m effortlessly, low, penetrating, accurate, perfect spin with a perfect technique. His kicking is actually excellent and huge asset especially when playing in the back half.

:)

Are you sure? I hope you are BTW.;)

I went to training a few weeks back and he was doing a few runs around the boundary. I noticed that he stopped and took a stride to stretch his groins ( it seemed ) and then walked away shaking his head.

He wasnt reacting like he'd been shot but was definitely feeling pain and discomfort and looked as though he was frustrated at not being quite right.

from what I saw that day, thats how I read it.
