Coach Carlton under Voss

Im not sure I agree that the loss of Pittonett will completely diminish the dominance of Carltons midfield.

The Dogs have lost hitouts for years and still had a dominant midfield. Obviously would rather a gun ruck but lacking one is workable if you plan for it.

Based on a fragmented plan of cycling through tall mids under a 3rd man up option which was negated by rules a few years back. A ruck getting first hands to the ball at the stoppages makes all the difference.

Unfortunately Carlton need to get better at stopping the 5-6 goal swings but they also have an amazing ability of playing out of form players back into form.

Sonny Walters hasn't had a kick for 2 years hits form against Carlton
Rory Lobb usually looks like tarzan and plays like Jane, he then looks like Wayne Carey on Saturday night.

Spot on, 7th-9th.

On paper good enough to challenge most, but still bedding down a game plan and unable to sustain pressure over 4 quarters.

Our best has looked elite, worst has been shocking. Like the polarities under Teague have shifted even further.

Can’t fault the effort, the technical side needs a lot of work however.
Yeah but your team lost to Freo. LoL

What’s weird is they are like a juiced up version of last years side. Amazing out of the middle and very efficient going forward but still can’t defend the opposition when they have the ball.

Melbourne and Richmond’s one wood during their premiership years is/was their ability to set to up behind the ball and suffocate opposition.

Are Carlton trying to do it a different way or will they improve the defensive side of their game as time goes by

Trying to build it as we go. As an astute watcher I can actually see the different styles and plans we're trying to implement each week. Think the last 2 weeks after the Freo game we've worked a lot more on our transition game trying to change angles more rather than just stomping through contests and hoping to get the ball forward. Yesterdays 3rd qtr saw us move the ball as well as we have and score from turnover which has been limited through the rest of the year

Going ok, still a work in process but I will take top 4 after 8 rounds. the way I see this year is that there is one outstanding side ( Melbourne), One very good side (Brisbane) and the rest is a bit of a lottery so getting on a roll for any mid level team can reap pretty good rewards. Jones was an enormous loss down back and I feel we will not be a serious contender until we find an adequate replacement.

Of the games played so far :

Carlton in 2021 lost to - Richmond, Doggies, Port, North, Adelaide and has beaten all these teams in 2022
Carlton beat Hawthorn in 2021 and beat them again in 2022
Carlton beat Fremantle in 2021 and lost in 2022.
Carlton lost to Suns in 2021 and lost again in 2022.

So far Voss has improved performance relative to 2021.

Our defending has been a lot better than past few weeks. We are 8 weeks into an entirely new gamepla. Hopefully we improve as the year goes on.

FWIW I wouldn't want us directly copying Richmond and Melbourne, the best sides innovate and invent their own system, not just copy the reigning Premiers.

Hard to say if Carlton’s defence has improved the past few weeks or the opposition have just been worse. North aren’t a real AFL side at this point.

Bit of both.

Freo we weren't even that bad. They were just genuinely too good.

The next 2 weeks will be really interesting as GWS always cause us trouble and Sydney are pretty good.

8th spot could be virtually anyone. Most likely Dogs replace Richmond or Saints by end of home and away season.

Think Richmond will make the 8.

The Dogs are shot, and I can see the Saints dropping away.

Maybe, 8th will be making up numbers anyway but Dogs only side outside 8 that can make real inroads.
Need Keath, English and Bruce back.
Also need Caleb Daniel to find form as rely on his ball use a lot.
If that all clicks they will be dangerous but it will be struggle to mount enough wins up for top four with how the fallen away recently.
Never forget, they were 19 points up in grand final in third quarter so at their best they still can shape the final 8 at minimum.

Last year we arguably had the worst midfield in the entire league. Atm that’s 90% of the reason for our improvement imo, being able to link up out of a stoppage and better pressure around the ball probably makes up the rest.
A big reason our backline struggles is because we don’t have a intercept marking type that good defences do. We looked much better with Gov back there so hopefully he or Marchbank get back on the park. ATM we can’t do that because the cattle aren’t there.

We didn't have the worst midfield, just one that ran one way, and were not ebouraged to be defensive minded and accountable, which put pressure on our backline.

The Recruitment of Cerra and Hewett have helped a lot (especially easing the load on Cripps who is having a Brownlow medal esque season so far) but it's much improved pressure acts, chasing, tackling and one percenters that Vossy and his coaching panel which started in the pre season has been the biggest difference, and a fit and healthy Charlie and Doc helps a lot too.

Reckon we had the best off season changes in more than 2 decades to be honest
