Coach Carlton under Voss

Carlton supporters and a few others are obsessed with Pendlebury and Sidebottoms ages. The other elderly blokes are all 33 or under which is hardly fossilised these days. And the two elderly blokes are probably playing at a comparable level to their career years. The cliff will come but why wouldn’t we load up this year. Seems a good decision so far despite what we were told all summer
Corrected that for you.

Look in the ladder prediction thread. A lot of people predicted a Collingwood bounce back season and I think they were even one of the premiership favourites.

I don't think many people actually thought it was a foolish idea to load up for 2025 at all.

What midfielder would be a fair trade for Harry?

Someone like Matt Kennedy?

Players are let go for various reasons Fadge, some just can’t find a rhythm in their team and need to move on.

Dunkley wanted out for various reasons and to play a more pivotal role, he went & won a 2nd flag with the Lions

Adz as you know was in a similar situation with Collingwood and found his mojo when we moved, same with Kennedy.

Some players just don’t get or fit into their clubs long term plans. Theres no guarantee that Kennedy would be playing good footy at the Blues had he stayed. It’s more than just a list of players on paper.

Forget about the name, I was just being cheeky.

It was more about the level of player.

A fair swap for Harry McKay, who would be in the 50th to 60th percentile re: trade value for tall forwards, would be someone like Matt Kennedy, who would be in the 50th to 60th percentile re: trade value for midfielders.

I went searching in the Ladder Prediction thread for the average ranking per team just before the season started.

Unfortunately there wasn't one at that time, but the latest one was done in October, and had Carlton 8th and Collingwood 9th.

Glancing at the thread, the trend didn't get any better as the off season continued, with Carlton getting better, and Collingwood getting older.

If you provide me one done at the start of the 2025 season, I am happy to have a look.

I hope this applies to Baz as well.

They were on the verge of a dynasty though.

Was set to be a revolutionary dynasty too. Most are littered with stars on every line. Theirs was going to be littered with talentless turds on every line. #visionaries

To think around this time last year some arrogant dip sh!ts from this lot were trying to tell Geelong supporters (of all teams) we don't know/understand what good drafting looks like. Is remarkable how far ahead of themselves they got with what always too me looked a limited group that did not have the right blend of platers.

all good,

The last sentence of my post is where I think the issue is, beyond the playing list. Club, coach, etc. Time to cut ties with Voss IMO

Lots of examples to refer back to & I could have written a wall of text. I think Fadge will understand the point to my post and reply to his response.

Carltons biggest issue is that the board has too much influence on the footy department
I think this is it. I’ve heard Carlton supporters say of late they need a big name coach, well, no, that’s been tried with Pagan and MM and they sacked them both. Since the John Elliott days it’s been a huge crossover from the suits to the actual playing department.

Any ego attached to the club needs to be gone because there’s nothing of note to get uppity about. I reckon they need to start looking at leadership standards all over the place and begin the cull.

Is it? Previously perhaps but I think the issue now is too many in the footy department haven't been good enough.
Already sacked SOS, too soon to tell but should improve.

Trust Wright on footy matters, has a good eye.

He can't sack the Board, who let influential figures outside the footy dept interfere (and interfere themselves, less egregious but still crippling).

The current board are St Kilda 1980s tier incompetent (they have more money than Dy Kila 1980s, the only difference). They have to go, and the new board have to back Wright, or they will remain a joke.

Facts here.

Carlton have had rubbish leaders since the Smorgon days.

Off field leadership has been a joke for 20 years

Certainly looking that way, it’s more than on field and bigger than voss

He’s the type of coach that needs Taronga support around him, as do most of them

Can you imagine how much strife he’d be in if Carlton hadn’t had a mind-blowingly easy draw so far this year?

Melbourne were the 9th bottom 8 (currently) team they’ve played this year, and the 8th bottom 6 team, while they’ve played an incredible 5 games against the bottom 3 of West Coast (twice), North (twice) and Richmond.

To put that into context with us, who are currently 4th bottom:

Games v bottom 8 for the year so far:
Blues 9, Saints 5

Games v bottom 6 for the year so far:
Blues 8, Saints 3 😳

Games v bottom 3 for the year so far:
Blues 5, Saints 2 😳

Wins v top 8 teams:
Carlton 1 (Geelong)
St Kilda 2 (Geelong, Freo)

Wins v top 12 teams:
Carlton 1 (Geelong)
St Kilda 3 (Geel, Freo, Port in Adel)

Losses v bottom 8 teams:
Carlton 3
St Kilda 2

Losses v bottom 3 teams:
Carlton 2
St Kilda 1

Give St Kilda Carlton’s draw so far and Carlton St Kilda’s, and from the evidence above, Carlton are currently 4th, if not 3rd bottom, and we’d pretty much certainly be 3 if not 4 spots higher (all else being equal).

And Voss would be gone. The draw has saved his bacon!

Sort of reminds me of Essendon. They have similar problems too.

Yet Essendon in the last 20 seasons have lured some solid experienced coaches in Mark Bomber Thompson, John Worsfold and Brad Scott

Think it’s a pretty good example of how bad “the draw” is and how much it can distort the season.

It’s a Mickey Mouse concept for what is meant to be a professional sports league.
I get it. And everyone including Carlton supporters acknowledged they had received a soft draw in 2025. Not everything has to be converted into a whinge about how hard St Kilda have it though. It's covering so many topics and becoming relentless.

Neither team was going anywhere significant this year based on their performances. Maybe with a soft draw St Kilda get 12 wins and finish 10th, a couple of games out of the 8. They get a worse pick. Some bottom 4 finishes will be good for the Sainters. Maybe difficult draws will help with that.

I thought it was an interesting comparison of clubs in similar positions, didn’t take it as a whinge.

Not like an easier draw would have helped us this year IMO, especially when you drop games to the likes of West Coast…..

Hopefully one day in the near future we have a comp with enough teams so that everyone plays each other once. Would make a lot of these big matches even more meaningful.

The last five rounds this year are pretty irrelevant, apart from the top 8 teams occasionally playing each other. Waste of time.

Posters who have been saying we're destined for bottom 2 all year complaining that we have an easy fixture...
