Coach Carlton under Voss

We didn't have the worst midfield, just one that ran one way, and were not ebouraged to be defensive minded and accountable, which put pressure on our backline.

The Recruitment of Cerra and Hewett have helped a lot (especially easing the load on Cripps who is having a Brownlow medal esque season so far) but it's much improved pressure acts, chasing, tackling and one percenters that Vossy and his coaching panel which started in the pre season has been the biggest difference, and a fit and healthy Charlie and Doc helps a lot too.

Reckon we had the best off season changes in more than 2 decades to be honest
Our midfield last season.
Walsh. star
Cripps. Played like a B grader at best
Kennedy. Very, very average. Only got a rookie spot.
Dow. not AFL level.
Curnow. Solid Battler.

It was a basket case and beaten virtually every week.

Teague never rated Kennedy and played him in the wrong position when he was in the seniors and that is another reason I am glad he is gone.

Think you are right about Dow, but you are too harsh on Ed Curnow, was one of our most consistent players last year and great clubman.

Deserves better than to be labeled as a solid battler imo

Curnow is fine as a fourth mid. Last year he was our second and that was the problem. Ed wasn’t the problem.
Kennedy was still given opportunity but didn’t show anything like he has this season.

Last year we arguably had the worst midfield in the entire league. Atm that’s 90% of the reason for our improvement imo, being able to link up out of a stoppage and better pressure around the ball probably makes up the rest.
A big reason our backline struggles is because we don’t have a intercept marking type that good defences do. We looked much better with Gov back there so hopefully he or Marchbank get back on the park. ATM we can’t do that because the cattle aren’t there.

Yeah midfield is much improved but I think you guys are still quite poor in transition. Not Essendon bad mind you but last time I saw the stat you were 16th at preventing scores from d50. Given how efficient the forward line is plus how good the mids are around the ball imaging if you could get to mid table at transition defence? Would be a genuinely good side.

Defence is woefully undermanned which doesn't help the run ons from the periodic lack of transition pressure. Jones gone, talls that showed form in patches (Marchbank, McLovin) perpetually injured, band aid talls (McDonald, Plowman) injured. At least Young is standing up.

Part-timers like Chol and Lobb had an absolute field day because Weitering can only do so much until he gets his hands on one of those hologram bracelets from Total Recall.

Would hope the club can get in the ear of a fit and reliable key tall or two but that still doesn't fix the other problem, which is the ruck.

Yep we are still poor defending the turnover and pretty much the same as last season. There is plenty to work on and fingers crossed when Gov gets back or maybe Marchbank we can sit one behind the ball as both are good intercept marks. McGovern is also our most damaging kick which is a big weapon. Problem is both have big question marks over their fitness. Atm we have no one who is any good in the air to play behind the ball so I’m hoping that is playing a big part of our weaknesses

A Nick Vlaustin/Tom Stewart type would sure up our defence into one of the best going around. Weitering and Young have been really solid in one on one defending and Williams, Docherty and Saad have all been great this season in contests and rebounding but we have almost no intercepting ability through the midfield or backline. Docherty used to be elite at it before his ACLs but doesnt have his aerial prowess these days. If Marchbank or Mcgovern can come back healthy (which is a big big if) they could provide some weapons in that regard.

Marchbank especially was one of the most natural interceptors I've seen play from ealry in his career but he just cannot stay on the park at all. Was close to BOG from 3/4 game time on the weekend in VFL after 2 years out which is a good sign. Hopefully we see a bit of him this year and he can get a good run at it. Cripps post game compared his ability to Curnows in that hes another he considers a superstar talent whos been deprived of showing it due to his body.

Love what Voss and his team have done... All us Bluebaggers can finally see a promising future...

Also love what Sayers and Cook have brought... The club is one now...
Last off season under Sayers, was full of the best decisions the club has made in the past 20-30 years...

Carlton has spent all its money on glitz and glamour. The bottom end is sub-AFL standard.

This will take time.
That's not really true. The only big ticket player this off-season was Cerra.

Most of our improvement has come from cheap/in house growth Hewett was a role player for Sydney we got for free that has gone up multiple levels since arriving, Kennedy actually being played and playing as a mid has been huge, Cripps returning to his best, Curnow fit and returning to his best, Docherty returning to career best footy (miraculous really) and (before his injury) our ruckman Pittonet that we got for a pick in the 50s.

Really its mostly been bargain buys or in house growth that's lead to this, not the glamour hires. Of that type only Saad has had a big impact, and he's probably on the lowest salary of the higher profile moves.

Lost: Jones

Affectively added or added: Cerra, Hewett, Curnow, Durdin, Carroll, Young.

Gained improvement from: Cripps, Silvagni, O'Brien, Williams, Kennedy, de Koning, Pittonet, Docherty, Fisher, Owies, Cottrell, McKay.

Currently waiting to return: McGovern, Marchbank, Honey, McDonald.

The coaching has been better, no doubt but they have a lot more to work with. Carlton are at that magic 7 year mark in their rebuild which is about the time most full rebuilds are complete. I still think Carlton have defensive weakness' although they have not been present the last few weeks, the opposition have been mediocre but they may have tidied up a few things as well.

The blues have a pretty good team. Are missing a high quality third tall defender due to injuries to McGovern and Marchbank and will be a lot better with either of them in the side. Have been missing a good CHB although Young has stepped up the last few weeks. Have a few ok options for the wing but could do with an elite wingman.

Have a solid backling, a good forward like with one of the best two tall forwards in the game, one of the best onball groups in the league with Cripps, Walsh, Cerra, Hewett and Kennedy all having a great season.

I think the coach has played a fairly big part, he and a few others there are all about setting standards. I think recruiting and natural progression is a big part of it. The list no doubt is in good shape. The reserves have been terrible and there has been nothing there the last few years. Now they are 4th and there are plenty of players putting their hand up each week for a senior game such as Dow, Motlop, Kemp, Stocker, Carroll, Philp, Plowman, Parks, Williamson etc.

I don't think Carlton are the finished product yet but are building towards that pretty well.

Looking like a really solid appointment.

Beating other top 4 sides without half our best 22 including our best key defender.

The team is playing disciplined footy and finally added some mongrel.

Very promising signs.
"Half our best 22 including our best key defender."

Lol, talk about drawing a long bow! The word "hyperbole" comes to mind!
