you're right. i think it'll take at least 3 pre-seasons of extreme discipline from yarran for him to have the tank to play in the midfield. it may never even happen if he has the same attitude as betts. al i'm hoping for this year from yarran is to provide the defensive pressure we've been lacking in our forward line since hamill left and to kick about 20-25 goals.

and may i just quickly point out that yarran coming last in today's time trial has me very excited. the fact that he was able to dominate the wafl with such a poor fitness base indicates how much potential this kid has. as opposed to the rhys palmers' of this world (and i'm not having a crack at him he's a fantastic player) and there are many of his type who dominate at junior level almost exclusively through their far superior fitness base.

why doesnt this suprise me, only a carlton supporter could post something like this.

why, hes excited yarran finished last.......... you dont need to read any more into it.

give anybody a choice if they want their new recruit to finish last 99% will say no.

It's Carlton THE_GUN, there's not much to get excited about.

End of thread.

How did Cuz go in the run around the 'Tan' today? What's that you say? He didn't run? Hang on. I've been reading posts from the Richmond faithful claiming that Cuz has kept himself physically fit during his time out of the game. Yet his coach states he is at least 4-6 weeks away from fitness & he couldn't even guarantee he would be ready to play by Round 1. I guess the saving grace for both Yarran & Cousins, is that they are training to play AFL football, not to compete in cross country events.

I did have respect for you as a poster MS, but unfortunately after that it is all gone.

Yarran is a small forward and a very good one. Have you people seen his WAFL highlights? The kid can play, just never in the midfield.

As for the actual topic of this thread, Carlton's midfield would want to be better.. they don't have a credible backline and their forward line is made up of one loose cannon and now an 18 year old kid.

But why don't Carlton ever pick key position players?

further opposition ignorance.

while i have to agree with you about our forward line (though i bet you wouldn't mind a loose cannon if he kicked 99 goals in a year but that's off topic) you are deadset wrong about our backline. i think we have one of the best developing backlines in the comp. jamison will be a wonderful full back and bower a wonderful CHB. we'ev also got waite who can play the loose man to perfection (if only he could kick better) and 2 players who could potentially become very good small defenders in anderson, browne. throw in grigg and walker and you have great rebound. not to mention we still have thornton, austin (developing), o'hailpin, carrazzo and scotland. our backline is not a concern.

What, for pointing out the obvious? That time trials count for very little in the scheme of things for true footballers. You see the likes of Tim Clarke, Ian Prendergast, Callum Chambers etc, dominate time trials over the years, but when you put them on the football field, they are 'duffers'.

Not for a moment was I intending to knock Cousins for not competing in the time trial, but just to highlight to a Richmond poster, whose trolling efforts have put him on the borderline of having a break from BF, that if you are going to rate how a player's season/career is going to go, based on a time trial, then you are really demonstrating ignorance. Sometimes you have to speak a language that trolls understand.

Oh. You were being sarcastic. Phew. Respect back up.

You're wrong there. It proves that Yarran will never be successful in the midfield with his poor engine. Over the years small fowards have changed, becoming players who can adapt to the midfield and play a quarter there or so. Adds another string to their bow. Nathan Brown for example or visa versa, midfield to foward. Yarran will never be able to do this to any affect of what other players can. Will be a one dimensional player and would get run off his legs in the midfield. So in that respect you can measure how a player will go in their career. Next argument?

So you are writing off an 18 year old, who has participated in a whole 3 weeks of training at an AFL club? If you don't have an engine at 18, you are done for? How many kids at 18 do have an engine, for goodness sake? Greg Williams was written off as a youngster, because of his lack of pace/fitness. Yet he is the best midfielder the game saw in the last quarter century.

Did you happen to notice that one of the other players near the rear of the field in the time trial was Nick Stevens (a position he has regularly filled)? Somehow he has forged a career as a midfielder, despite not being a cross country specialist, including being in the Power's best 22 when they were winning minor premierships.

I think a player, who has 70 scoring shots, as a 17 year old, in a senior competition (WAFL) is a handy pick-up, when you are looking for a forward first, allowing time for him to develop fitness after 3 or 4 full pre-seasons in the AFL system, with a view to playing him through the midfield, if/when his fitness improves. Of course if his fitness doesn't reach the level of a midfielder, a 40-50 goal per year return as a small forward, will more than pay his way.

Have you written off Dale Thomas as an AFL player? He openly admitted in an after the game interview, during the 2008 season, that he did not currently have the engine to play in the midfield, but would be working on his fitness during the next pre-season. At 21 years of age he still has time to build his fitness, but even if he doesn't, as long as he regularly kicks goals, he will pay his way.

BTW, have a read of Tiger08's post. He has obviously seen Yarran play & has commented accordingly. Unlike yourself, who has read a post on a forum & made up your narrow, little mind based on that.

Never said I was writing him off as a player did I? I simply stated that he won't be as flexible to move around as a coach as say Nathan Brown. Your references to Nick Stevens and Gregg Williams also amuse me. Anyways I'm done with this thread as it's clear the public has sorted out the winner and I don't wanna sit here and argue all day about some slow kid called Yarran. He may well end up as a good player, never said he wouldn't but has some work to do on the track.

Great thread to read, ill put it down to this.

two bloody good midfields

two teams who will be the benchmark in the future

two teams who stole westcoasts two best midfielders :p

Cant wait for round 1

In the spirit of arguing every single point raised in this thread I agree that we stole Judd, but would like to remind you that you just accepted Cousins when everyone else wouldn't. Subtle difference.

You didn't steal Judd. He left wc and Carlton offered him the most money

Not "stolen" literally, but also for a bit of my own argument you paid overprice for Judd and we got Cousins for free. Subtle difference.

You threw the kitchen sink at judd, judd didn't want a bar of it. cousins threw the kitchen sink at every afl club, no one bar richmond wanted a bar of it. massive difference.:)

Has nothing to do with their talents and how much pay they are getting. We win handsomely out of the 2 deals

another way of putting it is
re-judd , you paid through the nose for him (but he is a champion player)

re-cousins, he was gifted to us because the other clubs didnt have the courage to take him because of sponsors, (but he is also a champion)

lmaoo, i particularly like this bit.

Judd, Murphy and Gibbs are more than capable of winning their fair share of hard ball. Carrazzo too is very good at getting the balls from the pack - his disposal lets that skill down though. Bentick was averaging the highest amount of tackles per game in the AFL when he was given games. Hadley is another hard nut option. Robinson, when developed, will also be very hard at it.

We have a very good list of outside players, probably some of the best outside mids in the game. That's not a bad thing. Stevens is absolute cream when he gets the ball, and Scotland is a very useful player to have delivering the ball inside 50.
