Carlton vs Adelaide

Good to see you've acknowledged Van Berlo, Thompson, Doughty, Reilly, Knights, Douglas, Vince and McKay is a vanilla midfield for a run of the mill football club who prides itself on being Port.

They might win you the game, but they're not superstars or even out and out guns.

Thompson would be the only midfielder I'd pick in our best 22.

What has McKay done?

LOL.

I can count Grigg and Russell if Crows fans want to chuck his name into the mix. ;)
Umm im sorry to say but Van berlo Reillly Thompson Doughty and probably knights would all be in our team

There are many reasons(not excuses) why Carlton have finished low for the last 6 years, and your "theory" may be the case for a game or two here or there, but its utterly ridiculous to say "they haven't been switched on for 6 years".

Seems you complaining about Carlton fans generalising is hypocritical.

No I was just saying that's the reason behind your poor form over the last few years - in jest obviously.

I actually put that there for the benefit of the Carlton supporters who clearly have no idea what they are talking about when it comes to Crows players - particularly our younger players. The stats don't tell the whole story, certainly, but they do give an indication. I hope I have educated some. ;)

Averages would have been much better at conveying your argument, given there are guys on that list who haven't played all five games.

Are you familiar with the concept of development? That's what the poster was suggesting, that we are no longer the rabble we were. We are a long way from being a powerhouse again but all things being equal (and no they aren't) the Crows will have to be switched on to beat us. You said that yourself pretty much.

Oh god.

I'm not saying you're not developing, I'm not saying we're gonna belt the living crap out of you, all I am saying is that some of the posters on here have no right to say that we're gonna get nowhere near Carlton on the weekend. I've never seen our team get underestimated so badly leading up to a game - even Hawthorn fans were more worried than your supporters seem to be, which is why I was saying I'm not exactly sure where all this confidence comes from? From 2 wins in 16 games?

It's gonna be tight and as I have said if you ("you" being directed at the over-confident Carlton fans) think you're gonna run over the top of us and have an easy win then guess again.

Goodwin? Mcleod? Knights? Reilly? You're telling me you'd prefer Pfieffer? lolz.
They weren't in the names that Crows supporter mentioned. ;)
Exactly. You have no idea.
Because he's a household name and a young gun like Gibbs, Murphy and Selwood?

I doubt he would even get a game ahead of Gibbs, Murphy, Walker, Grigg, Simpson, Judd, Carrazzo, Scotland, Hadley, Stevens and Houlihan in our best 22.

Look, I said that stats don't tell the whole story. And yes averages may shed some more light. So lets have a look:

Averages:
Douglas 14.4 disposals, 3.4 marks, 1.0 goal, 3.8 tackles * (off bench)
Mackay 12.0 disposals, 4.6 marks, 0 goals, 1.2 tackles * (off bench)
Pfeiffer 13.2 disposals, 5.2 marks 0.8 goals, 1.8 tackles
Porplyzia 20.6 disposals, 4.4 marks, 0.8 goals, 4.2 tackles
Gibbs 19.0 disposals, 5.8 marks, 0.5 goals, 3.0 tackles
Thompson 23.4 disposals, 4.8 marks, 0.6 goals, 4.6 tackles
Judd 25.0 disposals, 2.8 marks, 1.0 goal, 4.8 tackles
Vince 18.8 disposals, 6.2 marks, 1.0 goal, 2.6 tackles
Scotland 19.8 disposals, 6.2 marks, 0.4 goals, 1.2 tackles
Doughty 20.4 disposals, 4.8 marks, 0 goals, 3.8 tackles
Simpson 17.8 disposals, 7.8 marks, 0.2 goals, 2.2 tackles
Edwards 18.4 disposals, 6.2 marks, 1.0 goals, 3.8 tackles
Stevens 21.4 disposals, 4.2 marks, 1.0 goals, 2.2 tackles
Knights 23.4 disposals, 5.5 marks, 0.2 goals, 5.0 tackles (2007 av.)
Reilly 21.0 disposals, 4.0 marks, 1.0 goals, 3.0 tackles (2008 1 game)

Murphy 22.0 disposals, 8.0 marks, 0.8 goals, 2.8 tackles

Have not included McLeod or Goodwin's figures but they also play through the mid-field. Not sure which of your players play off the bench. Also not taken into consideration is actual game time.

There's really not much in it.

lol. Trying to argue that player A is better than player B because he has 20.1 possessions V 18.1 is just plain stupid, meaningless, and irrelevant. WATCH what the players do with the footy on gameday, rather than on online statisticians facts and figures which do mean ZIPO. A team with an ultra-flooding chip-kick gameplan like the Crows will always have a relatively high possession count, but the Crows always fail at the end of the season because of lack of list talent, compared to other finals contenders (e.g. 2007 finals series). :)

Wow hypocrite much? You've just said WATCH what the players do with the footy on gameday, yet you've just say we play an ultra-flooding style of footy. have you seen any of our games this season parrot? Did you miss our 40 goals against Bulldogs & Eagles? Not to mention we're only 11 points behind you on the FOR tally.

And what about 05 and 06? We made it to 2 prelim finals - nope not a GF but the only team better than us in those 2 years were WCE IMO. You're really struggling parrot, seeing as we DON'T have an "ultra-flooding gameplan" nor are we as crap as you make us out to be.

And then bizarrely you post stats.

lol. Sorry, but everything other that a flag is failure, pure and simple. I wouldn't be happy watching my team play that dead-boring ultraflooding rubbish the Crows serve up to their supporters each week, with the "...at least we'll make the finals playing this way..." excuse. To win flags requires talent, and an exciting brand of footy - the Crows fail on both counts. :)

lol. Sorry, but everything other that a flag is failure, pure and simple.

Correct. We are MAKING the finals though which shows we're a quality team to consistently do so, and also consistently making it deep into september. No we haven't won a grand final in this period and I know that, but we are far better than you make us out to be.

I asked before, how many Crows games have you seen this year?

To win flags requires talent, and an exciting brand of footy

Sydney were boring, how'd they win a flag?

oh FFS. I am not saying player A is better than player B!!!! What I am doing is providing a statistical analysis of the players in BOTH midfields. Take from that what you will. Clearly some Carlton supporters have never heard of some of our younger players let alone seen them play. This gives them an opportunity to see what these relatively unknown (outside of SA) players have been doing.

As for our "ultra-flooding chip kick gameplan" - have you even watched us play at all this year - NAB cup included? We have chip-kicked for two passages of play in all the games so far this year. One was against Port in the dying minutes of that game and the other against Freo last weekend when they had ALL the momentum. That "chip-kick" won us the game BTW. But for the rest of our game-plan it is quick movement of the footy, predominantly using the corridor or a change of direction down the open flank.

Now here's a statistical comparison for you:

Carlton average 352.8 disposals per game. Adelaide only 17.4 more with 369.4 per game. You have 13.57 disposals per goal scored, we have 13.78. We are averaging 99.8 points per game. Carlton are averaging 102. On paper, we look very evenly matched.

Murphy>>>Gibbs>>>>>Hampson>>>>>Sellar>>>>>Grigg>>>>Tippett>>>>>>Mackay.

Why do i keep looking at this thread.

Because it's funny? i don't know

Anyway, should be a great match, going for a bit of a look myself, hope the boys play like we did against the Pies because if we do, we will win IMO.

Reading the Adelaide board, half of them think MacKay from Gibbs, straight swap, would be fair at the end of the year.

Our team:

The team is:
B: Johncock, Rutten, Bassett
HB: Symes, Bock, McLeod
C: Mackay, Goodwin, van Berlo
HF: Douglas, McGregor, Edwards
F: Vince, Burton, Porplyzia
R: Griffin, Thompson, Shirley
Inter: Tippett, Doughty, Knights, Stevens
Emerg: Massie, Dangerfield, Maric
Into 22: Knights
Out: Jacky

Maric and Dangerfield will both be with the team in Melbourne. (Maybe a late change if the weather fines up?)

* Ps. Don't know what thread you are reading on the Adelaide board re Gibbs/Mackay
