Word from the main AFL and Carlton bigfooty boards has Allen, Bradley, Manton, Fevola and possibly Hotton missing this week. This would see the Blues very weak in the ruck and defence, something to take advantage of maybe.

Also Joel Smith out for a few weeks will help us against Hawthorn.

Apparently Matthew Allen has a fracture of the foot. It was described as being similar to the injury that plagued James Hird. It is expected that Allen will need surgery and probably miss the rest of the season. This is very bad news for Allen and Carlton. Bet they wish they still had Porter.

Carlton do look as though they may have a number of players missing this week. However we can't afford to take them lightly. Remember they beat Essenson, early last season I think, when they had their three best players missing.

Allen carried Carlton's ruck duties solo through 1999.

I dunno about the Blues lifting...they only seem to do it against their traditional rivals like Essendon and Collingwood...it's the build up that makes them do that little bit extra. I have doubts that they will do the same against us.

Keep in mind that whilst there will be no Allen or Bradley, there will also be no Kouta or Silvagni. The loss of Silvagni cannot be underestimated....it has unsettled their defence and they've lost his on-field leadership.

Yeah we cant afford to take em lightly,

But the Roos job against Carlton is getting easier by the minute.. if only Whitnall would go down with an injury:( O well..

Now we really have to stretch em, we can use Porter and Burton in the ruck- and put Petrie up forward, if Petrie isnt put on the snr list- put Burton in the forward line:d

Go Roos
We can cover basically anything they do I reckon- coz I doubt they'll have 3 talls in hte forward line- and if they do- we can cover them neway:D:D:D:D Hahahahaa.. GO ROOS

Heheheee.. ahahahaaa.khheheheheee.muhahahaaa.. Cool!
Fat'nall (Did I say Fat'nall, I meant whitnall)

GO ROOS

What do u think'll be the matchups?

Yeah John Elliot is playing, his taking Whitnalls place on the field- and Whitnall is playing in hte midfield, in the ruck- to cover Allan..

Go Roos;):p

Stop it , stop it, stop it...........

I get an uneasy feeling when we think we are on a promise to win.

Call me superstitious but I thought we were a cert in Rd 3 and look what happened.

Lance is Archer's bitch though.;)

No, didnt u hear?

Whitnall and Elliot were originally siamese twins, but then they got split- and Elliot went in a time machine- and went forward in time, mean while Whitnall went back in time- they are both meant to be approx 40 at the moment...

:p

O- Btw, Whitnall had his hair dyed, and he has a mark that differentiates him from Elliot..

It was a secret, but then I got hold of it.....

Go Roos

Hmmm...

Great preview Tashi... as always.

Anyways... back to the point. First of all, Allan has needs to wait for the scans he had on his foot. If they indicate some sort of stress fracture, then he'll be out for the year. But right now, that is not 100%... it might not be a stress fracture. Manton might be back in, this talk about Bradley getting suspended is absolute tripe and we will we down in our ruck. I am predicting Whitnall to play up forward, and the midfield to do some damage.

However... this game will be won in the midfield, and seeing the Kangas lose how they did... it's going to be tough for Carlton to win. Ditto for the Kangaroos. Refresh your memories to last year: You guys were killing us everywhere, and Carlton were low on form. Carlton came back from behind and won, however... I think it will be closer this time. McKernan might rise against his former side, and probably Porter too. Yes, Carlton's main concern is the midfield - they are not putting any pressure on the opposition (hence the clearence thrashing from Port), and in order for Carlton to win - the midfield is the key. Ditto for the Roos. Both need to hit forward targets, and help ease pressure from defence.

It's going to be a close game, and that loss the Roos received at the SCG will make it even harder. If the midfield plays well... then the Blues win. However, if the Kangaroo's midfield play much better, then Nort take the cake.

Nice one Thrawn.

I can't believe that the duel between Porter and McKernan is not being talked about. Will McKernan play in the ruck? Have the Blues got a young ruckman? Lindsay Smith perhaps? He can play forward too, it might be worth giving him a run. He looked good up forward last year against the Saints.

Really looking forward to watching the game at Colonial this Sunday! Two Roos games in a row...this is a rare treat for me!

People seem to be forgetting there is a dual Premiership ruckman playing for Carlton this week.

As much as McKernan's form is ordinary, like Steven Alessio at Essendon he can occasionally pull one out of the bag. He can also prove a handful to match up in their forward line.

Merrington has had a solid start to the season, and kicked four goals last week. I liked the look of him in a VFL game at the MCG (I think it was last year), mobile, strong overhead, maybe a little slow in terms of legspeed, but is versatile. A bit small to be a full time ruckman, but can relieve and can play effectively up forward.

If Allan misses through injury, with Hotton out suspended, there might be a temptation to bring Lindsay Smith in, but I think our ruck combination will more than adequately cover Carlton's.

The midfield is the big worry. Ours is good, but Carlton have Ratten, Camporeale, and the underrated Hickmott, Hulme and Murphy. Koutoufides has destroyed us at times, so he is a big loss to them, as we have usually been able to cover most of the others.

We look to have a size advantage up forward, especially if McCartney or Petrie play alongside big Sav.

If McKay plays on Pickett, it should be a good clash - McKay is as good as any defender of that size, so I wouldn't expect Pickett to cut loose like he sometimes does.

The two that I'm most worried about are Ratten and Murphy. Ratten is due for a big one, and he has a history of pulling one out of the bag when the odds aren't looking too good. The other is Murphy. He's always been able to do the pretty stuff, but from what I've seen this season, he's starting to do the one percenters as well. We've always been vulnerable to really creative players, and Murphy could be the one to unlock our defence.

Go to the backline and don't forget McKay and his ability to set up play on the rebound.

I reckon Makepeace will get first crack at him.

I think he's too short to play on Lappin, but I can't think of anyone else for Makey so you're probably right. Who should Baird get? Perhaps he might have a forward role this week if there is no defensive role for him....

Simpson to take Ratten.

Cochrane on Camporeale.

I think we match up pretty well in the middle.

Lappin might be too fast for Baird.....come to think of it, he'd probably be too fast for Makepeace too. I think Lappin's confidence is down and Makepeace does stick close to his man and it's that niggling type of player that could distract Lappin so much that he forgets to play footy.

When Lappin's confidence is good, he attacks the ball and he'll try things. But his confidence is down and he just loses his spark...goes into his shell. Makepeace could be the one to make sure that he stays in his shell for one more week.

As for Baird, I'd rather have him on one of the Blue's midsized or tall forwards...that way he can run off them when needed to take defensive marks should the Blues kick the ball into space. If he's on Lappin....well....Lappin is too dangerous a player not to have a marker on him at all times.

baird on merrington perhaps ??
martyn on whitnall (if forward)
makepeace on lappin

carltons goalkickers to date

merrington 6
mc kernan 5
lappin 3
ratten 3
hickmont 3

As far as I can remember, this is being based on one game (99 GF).

What about the H&A game earlier that year, Lance beat Archer then.
