Whenever there is a write-up in the papers we lose. I think we get ahead of ourselves sometimes and WC gave us a good reality-check. It hurt losing Robbo before the game and having a further 3 outs from the week before, losing Jammo killed us.

WC where the better side on the day but i think we can beat them with our best players in.
But we got beat.

Blues have reasonable depth - wouldnt say the best though.

On the loss and impact of injuries - Disappointment aside, I'm actually not too fussed about the loss.

The following players were missing from the 'best' 22.
1. waite (definite best 22)
2. laidler (almost definite best 22)
3. duigan (definite best 22)
4. setanta
5. hampson (almost definite best 22, was best 22 on form)
6. curnow (definite best 22)
7. robinson (definite best 22)
8. white

We also had jamison injured in the 1st quarter.

You might debate that a couple from the above list arent strictly best 22 players (and I'd agree) but its important to note that every single one of them was entrenched in the team and playing reasonable footy before being injured.

The Eagles played a great game, no doubt should have won by more if they kicked straight and they exploited the Blues lack of hieght etc.

But where the Blues lost it was in the loss of team coheision, 6 changes and then losing your full back kills a sides balance and team work. Half the players out were not guns but they were playing consitantly well and important roles. Replace these guys with a first gamer, a couple more fringe players who haven't played for a while and you lose team cohiesion.

Juddy had a cold and had 3 blokes rotate on him, Kruezer 3rd game back and finally comes up against some decent ruck opposition and gets little support from Warnock.

To beat the Eagles the Blues needed there best side out there fit and firing, and that didn't happen and the Eagles didn't let it happen.:D

Top post! This is An exact reflection on what happened on the day. Blues suffered 5 best 22 outs in one week. Any team would struggle with that much change. Add to it another few players being underdone coupled with west coast playing arguably their best game in 4 years and you have a Carlton loss.

Full credit to west coast, they were fantastic and really surprised menwith their game

injuries to key position players decimated the Blues structure. The backline resembled a northern bullants game.
At full strength they will roll the Eagles

When is a team ever at full strength?? Happens rarely.

Carlton were found out for having no depth.

Duigan, Laidler and Curnow cant be replaced??? Thats a real worry.

3 excuses in 1 paragraph.

Not bad.

You wont hear no excuses from Hawthorn with all their players unavailable.

At Hawthorn you lose one soldier and replace him with another one.

This.

I mean, half the Blues supporters are talking this year's flag, but can't replace players that didn't exist in their side 1 or even 2 years ago?

But apparently Collingwood are finished, yet at various stages we've had to find replacements for Swan, Jolly, Maxwell, Thomas, Beams, Johnson, Macaffer and Nathan Brown.

Hopefully OUR injury list puts Carlton's into a little more perspective.

I mean seriously, let's be brutally honest here, outisde of Jamison and Kreuzer, there's no one else missing Carlton shouldn't be able to replace pretty easily.

I mean, according to a couple of other threads on BF, Carlton also have the best depth in the AFL.

Not bad for Carlton to have a loss at this point.

Sometime's when you continue to win, area's where you need to improve are ignored.

Will still finish top four and from that point anything can happen.

Assuming that you mean 'you won't hear any excuses from Hawthorn', I hope that this rings true on Sunday evening.

we'll see at the end of the round, wont we?

If the Pies mop the floor with the Hawks i reckon the injury excuse will get a very good run;)

They where very good today, maybe last week was just an aberration?
Anyway will know more about this team in 2 weeks, when they play the Pies

Thanks thrawn, ....... we are still awesome though, ......fap,fap,fap,

They havent beaten a good side apart from Sydney, they have a soft draw now though so they should still make the top 4.

They could sure do with Kennedy right now though, Kennedy will punish Carlton for years to come after they made the catastrophic error of looking short term in obtaining Judd.

Yeah Judd has been an unmitigated disaster for Carlton.

I love this whole myth people keep trotting out about Carlton supporters claiming we would win the flag, etc etc. Where are they? No Carlton supporters in this thread have been anything other than realistic, that we are top 4 but need to prove a few extra things to challenge the top 2. This whole talk about an arrogant/delusional supporter base is something of fiction.

Many posters still wouldn't rate us even if we had won every game by 12 goals plus and be claiming 'they wont win when it counts' or some other such crap.

Also our losses have been to other top sides, is it better to lose to bottom sides? Or do you have to win 22 games to be taken seriously? Who thinks we should be going better? Many people calling us pretenders or whatnot probably predicted us to miss the 8 at the beginning of the year.

Also the depth issue - last week Geelong and Hawthorn played very meek opposition (much like we did today), and we played a top 5 side. If you have a third of your side out against a side similarly placed on the ladder, its going to hurt more than when you play a mediocre side out of form.

Thanks Carlton for absolutley smashing the tiges the week before they play us:thumbsdown:
Just to get them fired up like you did Melbourne against us...

Just hope they don't let Mitch Robinson near a microphone to talk about how Richmond played :D

Seriously though, they were like Essendon were in the 2nd quarter against Hawthorn, extended over about 3 quarters of the match.
