I can see the benefits of Carlton trading 1 for 3&6. I can’t, for the life of me, work out why Gold Coast would do that trade though.

Because whomever picks 3&6 might be GCS won’t be able to retain them, flight risk is a huge problem for the Suns as we all know.
Sam Walsh has pledged allegiance to the team that selects him, it’s no brainer. An immature player form let’s say SA moving to Sunshine Coast is making a huge change, practically zero footy environment too, 3 to 4 years, there gone.

My number 1 for freak and xfactor. Given where our list is at and the areas of his game that concern me, I wouldn't take the risk, especially when you have a guy like Rozee available. Slightly less xfactor, but works so much harder, tackles and can play anywhere from HB, wing, HF

If we had two top 6 picks, any combination of Lukosius, Walsh, Smith, Rankine and Rozee would be a fantastic result.

This is a year where the top end of the draft is so even, a clubs preference will literally come down to needs.

You can't definitively say one player is ahead of the others.

Bit like in 2015 draft of weitering cc shache etc. Charlie went 12 and now if we re-do the rankings now Charlie would be number 1

I just don’t buy into this rentention commentary being solely about the SA boys. Brisbane is no longer part of this conversation it feels. Is it because they have sufficient talent or that Fagan & Swann have changed the culture?

I feel that with the amount of young talent Carlton has, they are far better suited to take the safe option of the #1 pick, whereas GCS need so much talent through the door. They could take Kings, Smith, Caldwell if they are so worried about the SA kids. I think GCS would be out of their minds to trade 3&6 for 1.

If Rozee was playing in the TAC Cup, he would be an inside midfielder. Don't be fooled because he plays on the flanks in the SANFL. He's arguably the best mid in the draft.

I think you'd find that if Carlton and GC didn't have picks 1,2 & 3 in the draft, Walsh could slip to pick 4 or 5 quiet easily.

Port Pick 2. Rankine
St Kilda Pick 3. M. King
Port Pick 4. Rozee
Pick 5. Walsh/Smith

There was an article on AFL site a couple of days ago interviewing Mick Turner, Geelong Falcons coach, re Sam Walsh. Mick said it was a no brainer on multiple levels for Carlton to take Walsh.

I think in the year we took Charlie Curnow, Turner said then that Curnow would be the best player.

The other thing, it's hard for me to believe the Suns would trade for example 3 & 6 for the reason many have mentioned. This is a defeatist attitude. A club to be successful must put all the pieces off field in place & players will naturally stay. The AFL & Suns can't be that stupid.

He would be 1 or 2 in that draft for me, for any club after a mid he's number 1

I remember seeing Cotchin burst out of a pack during a trial U18 game at Vic Park many years ago, and was left speechless. Does Walsh have that burst from stoppages?

I see it as more of a stride than a burst, but it is enough to give him separation from the opposition.

The only thing I will agree with you on is if Carlton use pick 1 on Walsh, my review will be unfavourable unless they do something exceptional with their two late picks, though not because it's only one early pick, but because I have three guys I rate ahead of Walsh in Lukosius/Rankine/Smith. I'd in their position either just take Lukoius, move down a couple of spots for Rankine, or move down to around pick 6ish for Smith, so as to maximise value gained per pick.

So if we take Walsh at Pick 1 but who is who is Knightmare’s 4th ranked player, Knightmare will rate us unfavourably because we did not take one of his 3 higher ranked players.

Knightmare rated us down to a D last year because he didn’t rate TDK.

From memory, 5-6 players Knightmare rated last year were not drafted at all, and this includes the includes the Rookie Draft.

Exactly. A clever long stride and understanding your surrounds can take you a long way.
Walsh fared well at the combine and isn't slow. He is though, smart.

Sam loyd will pick walsh that's the type of player he likes, he sounds like a better version of barlow.
It should also be noted hes a very good drafter we got him in 2008 he built freo's 2013 GF side. The side freo are currently building will grow to be a better side than 2012-2015.
Your drafting will be fine.

Funny that I didn't want to mention Cuningham and thought to revert to Buckley, but just chose to leave names out....but now that you've raised them.

You know what's twice as funny though (not funny, but surprised no one sees this) is that there has been plenty of mention of Walsh not being a good kick on his left, but has anyone stopped and wondered why he is using his left at all and sometimes when most others would have taken the extra time to correct themselves and get to their favoured leg?

Seems to me that he's intentionally doing so in the heat of the battle for one obvious reason; He wants to get better.
There are times he's chosen to go via his left when he may not have needed to, at all.
Watch the clips again and you may see the same thing. Maybe not, but it's quite apparent to me.
