I would take Smith at 3 and either Rozee, B. King, Caldwell at 6

Remember drafting is not about the short term.

Weitering a KPD and I see Macreadie as a Westoff type.

King would be a replacement for Jones, for a guy at 200+ cm, can play both ends and has a sub 3 second sprint, will be a very good player

I'd prefer to recruit a Jones gorilla replacement via free agency or trade (like James Frawley to Hawthorn or Steven May to Melbourne) down the road.

If it was me, this draft should be about mid and hybrid mid-forwards.

Either Sam Walsh by himself, or Smith/Rankine, Smith/Caldwell, for me.

My preferred option too, but we all know SOS loves a tall.

What I would like us to do at the end of next year, is target Grundy, a year out from FA

King is also a lead up player more than a high marking forward according to his profile...we really don't have a forward of that type. Our talls are more marking forwards, maybe with the exception of Charlie.

Bringing a B King into the team would give us greater flexibility where Charlie could play more of a high forward using his run between half forward and half back a la Nick Reiwoldt.

SOS also has strong family connections to the King twins, so may be keen to get one on board already knowing their credentials.

Have you factored in Mitch McGovern?

I just don't see a need for Ben King with Weitering, Marchbank, Curnow, McKay and now McGovern already on our books.

We are getting killed in the middle.

That's a fair point...not sure if Gov is a lead up type forward but I see your point.

The assumption for taking a B King at say pick 6 is that we have already selected Bailey Smith at 3....and looking at bringing in some more mature age midfielders like Grigg/Gibbons/S Fisher etc with our late picks or through the rookie draft.

One player we all seem to overlook as well is Patty Kerr...still only 20 and played some really good footy for the NB as a key forward this year.

Smith is #1 on Port Adelaide’s board. There is 0% chance he’s available at 6.
I wouldn’t believe any of this type of rumour. There is a significant incentive for Port Adelaide to leak misinformation. There’s also the fact that Smith is very popular on BigFooty, so it could also be that someone (PA supporter) is reading into a situation and hoping for that player.

Fully agree about Kerr. I thought he even played the link up forward role quite well in his couple of afl games like Adelaide’s Lynch.
KPD/KPF are set for a decade. Might need a KPD in FA in next couple of years to cover Jones - so we should just load up on classy mids. Walsh or Smith and Caldwell/Rozee and we are well on our way long term.

We have a slightly athletically inferior version of Max King in Harry McKay (though Harry is a prodigious kick of the footy in comparison). McKay is not a high marking forward, merely a tall and explosive lead-up forward who can throw himself into a pack without having to get far off the ground.

There was an article on AFL site a couple of days ago interviewing Mick Turner, Geelong Falcons coach, re Sam Walsh. Mick said it was a no brainer on multiple levels for Carlton to take Walsh.

I think in the year we took Charlie Curnow, Turner said then that Curnow would be the best player.

The other thing, it's hard for me to believe the Suns would trade for example 3 & 6 for the reason many have mentioned. This is a defeatist attitude. A club to be successful must put all the pieces off field in place & players will naturally stay. The AFL & Suns can't be that stupid.

Does anyone else ever feel the urge to express themselves on this board about something, but only to realise you're only just saying the same old thing every which way one can? :)

We're almost there and we can then break the doors down at the club to see how the guys are coming along.

If that trade is done, I expect GC to of course take Walsh, but pick 2 is the one I am unsure of at this stage. So if we had 3 & 6, I believe SOS would take any 2 of Lukosius, Smith, B King, Rozee. I would be happy with a combination of a small and tall with those picks

What about rankine.

What about rankine.

My number 1 for freak and xfactor. Given where our list is at and the areas of his game that concern me, I wouldn't take the risk, especially when you have a guy like Rozee available. Slightly less xfactor, but works so much harder, tackles and can play anywhere from HB, wing, HF

Absolutely Harks lol.

I feel i've had my say and am now happy to sit back and see what Carlton actually do and how the draft goes in its entirity. In saying that i'm sure i won't be able to resist a bit more posting. After all, November is a Blues fan's September.:D:(

Funny isn't, first we were all debating who to take at pick 1, now it's whether to trade pick 1 for 3 & 6

Get the feeling it will shift again, especially if we add a 2nd rounder as part of trading down pick 1 and or using our 2019 1st

We do have lead up forwards but unfortunately the game isn't played to suit lead up forwards they are all lead away forwards or stand under the high ball these days hence why JSOS struggles in today's game as he is a good lead up forward as shown in junior footy, Carlton need to learn to use both types which would be hard to defend against with 2 leading back to goal and 1 or 2 leading at the ball carrier that is the future imo and the way to win a premiership. JSOS would excel playing as a lead up as he did in juniors which was when he played his best games that got him drafted.

I agree and don't believe you need to use top 10 picks on key defenders. You can generally find value later on in the draft.

I know that people talk about Bailey Williams as a ruck/forward, but I honestly believe he has the potential to be an elite defender.

Results from the combine:
  • 10th in standing vertical jump
  • 1st in running vertical jump
  • 6th in 20m sprint (faster than Ben King)
He is athletically gifted and has the frame to take on any KPF. Great closing speed and a leap that will allow him to spoil almost everything.

If he slides into the 30's on draft night, I think you'd be better off taking a punt on Williams and give him 3-4 years to develop in the VFL.

What about rankine.

If we had two top 6 picks, any combination of Lukosius, Walsh, Smith, Rankine and Rozee would be a fantastic result.

This is a year where the top end of the draft is so even, a clubs preference will literally come down to needs.

You can't definitively say one player is ahead of the others.

I can see the benefits of Carlton trading 1 for 3&6. I can’t, for the life of me, work out why Gold Coast would do that trade though.

Because there's a strong belief that the SA boys will go home after two years. If an interstate club drafts them, they will be taking on the flight risk of these players, which is why the trade looks so lucrative for Carlton.

Just to put this in perspective, GC traded Prestia for pick 6 which was used on Jack Scrimshaw, who was then traded to Hawthorn after two years for an upgrade of a 4th round selection to a 3rd round selection. He played almost every game in the NEAFL so he added absolutely nothing to their side.
