I actually don’t think there will be many at all. I’d rather Smith, Rankine or Rozee but that’s not a knock on Walsh. There’s so much top end talent, and arguably a few options with more pure talent than Walsh in this draft pool it’s no surprise there are so many different views on who the best is. Especially as the top 5 or 6 are all very different players stylistically.
I think Smith has the potential to be another Chris Judd the way he bursts from stoppages and kicks goals on the run.

Walsh is definitely the safe bet however Rankine gives us something we desperately need, marketability and a badly needed boost in membership.

Everything about us over the last 3 years has been safe, game style, draft choices etc ( besides Charlie boy) maybe it’s time to take a chance and add some real excitement around the club, imagine the excitement around a Rd 1 debut for Rankine on the MCG in front of 90,000 and then just imagine if he comes out and kicks 4-5 goals and lights up the MCG with Charlie, Harry and the Governor and we beat the Tigers, or even if we lose the excitement around Carlton would go through the roof and get our profile back to where it should be.

We can’t discount this part of the equation when making our choice of who to take, yes Walsh is an extra cog in our midfield that is needed but really that’s it, in terms of outside influence other than being taken at no1 he doesn’t add a lot. Where as Rankine adds so much more in terms of outside influence with his brash exciting dangerous style, he is a marketers wet dream especially combined with Charlie. Imagine how many articles and stories will be written about Rankine and Carlton. With the extra attention he will draw to our club I feel it is worth the risk of taking Rankine at pick 1. And honestly I see him as an Akermanis type player in the future with time in midfield as well as forward and a lot of time spent removing his foot from his mouth.
I love how you said "imagine" when describing Rankine lighting it up. I have no doubt Rankine is a type we need and he will become a very very good player, but if we choose him, watch him slowly adjust in year 1 to the rigors while Walsh racks up 15-20 touches a game with a few 25+ games along with a few goals... this board with do full circle and ask again why we didn't take the best midfielder and how much we lack depth in our midfield after just a few games. Theres more chance Rankine doesn't kick a goal in his first and also gets under 10 touches than the 4-5 goal imagination you can see.

Walsh is the right choice at 1. He will form a dynamic and very successful midfield group with the likes of Dow, Cripps, Setterfield, kennedy, Fisher, LOB, SPS etc for the next 10 years. We all lost our minds when talk went around Cripps wants help and people think if we don't get him more help, he will leave our club and go back to WA, his career maybe cut short (i actually dont believe either of these). We have murphy most likely done come the end of next year, Ed getting to 30 next year. Setterfield and best mid in this draft is/was a high priority.

I think some people want Rankine because maybe they think this rebuild is done. Its really not. There are many still going out the door. Rankine would be awesome, but to me, not this year. Maybe next. We need games into our midfield asap so they can learn each others game.

Welcome Walsh. I look forward to 200+ games of skill, courage, leadership and a hunger for the game and our mighty club!

This worries me, i want the next dustin martin, not mr nice guy.

Don’t get the wrong impression he’s a mature lad and populare for his footy prowess and level headiness he does not flash goes hard at the ball in or out and is competititive.
At 184 cm his brother almost 2 meters and dads tall too may grow , no weaklings in the family upright lads both brothers love their footy.
Just because they're not tattooed head to toe dies not make, Sam Walsh a mr. Nice guy on field.

Cripps, Dow and Walsh will be a fair starting midfield in a few years time.
Setterfield added to the mix is also huge. I see him as a player that may become a little Bont like. If we can get the best out of him, we really have had a super 2018 off season. Plus i believe Kennedy is only just beginning to find his feet. Look out

And a few 25+ games and a few goals isn’t imagination I suppose.

I played Cricket against his uncles (one game against his Dad) and was umpired by his Grand Father.

His Grandfather was a massive cheat, his Dad was as competitive a bloke as you ever come across and his Uncles (twins) were lovable rogue types (who I think found sledging the best part of cricket) but would do anything to win (for example every time we played 2 day games at their home ground the boundary would be 10m different from day to day while if you won the toss you always batted first because you knew they would juice up the pitch the next week - one week we only need about 10 runs with 2 wickets in hand on the second day and they had watered the pitch so much the ball left pug marks) and they refused to talk to the number 11 who fell on the last ball of a final to give my team the win (despite both of them being knocked over cheaply).

I don't think you will have any worries about him being too nice when it comes to competition.

Totally agree on both Setterfield and Kennedy who carried injuries right through the year as well as an interrupted pre season. Think Kennedy will make big in roads next year if fit.

I am a very big Walsh fan, however one query I have is his kicking execution.

I think he kicks extremely cleverly. He always tries to kick to advantage (or space if necessary). However I don't often see him nailing his targets.

I have the feeling he is trying too much, working too hard to perfectly place/weight his kicks. In some cases, it might even be the receiver's fault for not running to the right spot.

What's the deal, talent spotters? Does he try a little too much (which can be fixed with coaching) or does his kicking lack polish (which is harder to fix)?
How many times......... He's just

I do not care what his highlights are. I've seen him play already. What I want to see is what he does from here to justify not having a pick between 1 and 30 in this draft. I got to trust I will see why in the future.

Is that not the case for everyone?

Heck, I bet half the kids in the 1st round of this superdraft end up middling players (at best).

I have at least seen McGovern do it in the AFL, unlike McHenry.

You’re projecting just as much by building up what kind of specific impact Walsh will have in his few year. I think he will have a similar year to Andrew Brayshaw’s first season minus a broken jaw: mostly possession numbers in the teens (with a few bigger games) and a heap of defensive running and an emphasis on sticking to the basics. Rankine, in my view, would at worst parallel Rayner’s first year but may even surpass it.

Walsh won’t have a significant impact as an inside midfielder for at least a few seasons. He’s incredibly slight, and he’s more useful on the outside anyway. Kennedy and Setterfield will be the ones we will look to to really step up and assist Cripps, though they’re still very early in their development too.

Yes, it is just my personal concern of why the need to trade for McGovern. I was not for it as feel we got more need of mids and small forwards than talls. But, I am open to seeing what the reasons for the trade in the future. Hence I am keen to see him perform as won't be impressed if he adds nothing and we still short of needs for small forwards and mids. Would have liked some picks between 1 and 69. Lets hope McGovern performs to show why we have none after pick 1.

I actually think he is a very good kick, despite perhaps lacking the punch of other players.

He seems to have already adapted to his limitations, which is extremely rare at his age.

Walsh weighs his kicks very well and when he does miss a target, it is still to the advantage of his teammates

Maybe his team-mates didn't get to position quick enough. :)

Which of the Champs games are you talking about and we can look at it and assess it.

EDIT: As Arr0w says, Walsh lacks the punch in his kick. I'd love to see the ball move through the air quicker, but that doesn't look as though it's going to come about.

How do you think that'll translate to AFL where the game is much more contested and takes away the room he currently has to kick into?
That's my main worry about him because I'm really not sure.
