If Stocker did not break his jaw how high would he have gone?

The Blues appear to say top 10.

Would other teams have valued him at top 10 without the jaw injury?

His highlights looks to validate our move, from the little I've seen.

Thoughts?

SOS apparently rated Walsh Caldwell & Stocker as the Top 3 mids [emoji15]

Hard to say, I rated him late 1st, but players like this have a wide range, similar to a Jones or Valente, who I expect to go in the first 2 picks.

So I understand that the club could rate him so highly

Righto, who's meeting me at Ikon to start erecting this statue of SOS. We had two first round picks who are both midfielders and didn't give up #1.

Let the statue erecting begin. I'm so happy that a giggity won't cut it.

Huzzah!

*Whispers* Someone needs to fill Doro in on the news...

Was listening on my genuine 1937 Stromberg Carlson antique radio, once owned by Franklin D Roosevelt (certificate of authenticity supplied).

When you heard the trade I hope you screamed "What the FDR?!?!"

I think it is more reliant on where we finish. If Adelaide hand over pick 18 and we hand over pick 8, I still like our trade.
If we hand over pick 1 or 2 and only gain a pick 12 back, I like it less.
At some point you have to own your picks and complete the rebuild. In that respect I think SOS has done this, so I'm quite comfortable with the acquisition of Stocker. One of the reasons I liked Smith is the "burst" factor out of stoppages and Stocker is capable of providing some of that as well. I think it's important that he have more than just Dow who can provide that.

Collingwood, the Dogs, Sydney and North are set up in such a way that they've resigned themselves to matching bids.

That means clubs can aggressively bid for them, which is what I feel has happened with Quaynor, and to a lesser extent Thomas. I don't think the Crows would have minded landed Thomas there, but I'd suggest GWS were spoilt for riches.

In my mind, Quaynor is ranked outside my top 20, while Thomas is probably a few picks further back than 8, say 10-13.
I think the Dogs & Swans were set up OK. The Pies and Norf set themselves up way too far back in the draft for matching bids. I thought you, HARKER and I demonstrated exactly how vulnerable they were in our own phantom draft. If they wanted something that even remotely smelled like a 1st Round Pick they may need to match a ridiculous bid, which is what happened with Thomas and to a lesser extent with Quaynor. Good move by Reid.

And then when you throw in Pat, the WOW man, Fisher etc now all of a sudden we have depth in the middle, and Doc and rotate through there as well, I am pitching my tent.
Consider mine pitched

I am a big Caldwell fan, he will be a beauty if he gets his body right.

I would have Bailey Smith in there, maybe slightly before Caldwell.

Good draft for SOS and crew to bold in. Stuff 2019 draft, we liked this one a lot more.

Sos has built a team of top quality young talent in just 3 years ( 4 drafts) ,truly amazing when you look back at where we’ve come from.

Not all of these will work out of course but that’s gotta be the best 3 year rebuild in history

I reckon this years Top 20 will be as good as any draft

As for Stocker he’s another SOS injury deal. Got someone to break his jaw so we’d get him later. Nice work [emoji106]

Injury discount for both Stocker and Setterfield.

Could be a couple great steals.

The point being made was we may have been able to turn our first rounder into a better pick than 19 if we were serious about moving it on. We'll never know if it was an option or not but plenty of fans will be thinking that.

It's obviously hard to make a definitive call on this so early, however what I will say is the following ...

- this is a very, very strong, and deep draft, and so pick 19 is probably around pick 10 in a normal year.
- our plan was to go to the draft to stock up on kids, and so it makes sense to bring kids in as early as possible, so getting another kid like Stocker now is logical
- Stocker is a hard ball winner so will assist Cripps (again, sooner than later), so there's another strategic edge to the decision right there
- I think we are as set as we could ever wish to be for young talent esp in the middle of the ground, and so the focus now duly points towards using future drafts to bring in established talent, and as some posters have observed better to trade a pick btw 10-18 than a pick btw 1-6.

I like the move, for the reasons above.
At the end of the day we get x2 firsts for x1 first, and I don't think Adelaide will finish top 4 next year. Gut feel is it will be ...

- CARL : pick 16 (+Stocker, which equates to Pick 10 in a standard year)
- ADEL : pick 9

So 10+16 for 9.

Which is about on the money fair IMO.

I doubt that, but he could have easily gone anywhere from pick 12 onwards given how things came about.

I certainly rate him higher than Jones, Butters, Quaynor, Clark, McHenry, Sturt and Duursma, who will all picked before him. I guess that puts him at 9 to 11 on my board.

Quaynor is the type of player every club is chasing imo. A team with multiple top picks like PA, Adelaide and GWS would be mad not to take him. He would actually be perfect for us. If we had a pick from 12 on that's who I would've taken.
Thomas too is in the range of Jones, Caldwell, Blakey and Butters. I don't think him being above them is really a stretch.

I don’t know what the fuss is about. We didn’t have another pick until really late in this draft. This draft is considered a super draft, next year not so much. A top 20 pick this year is probably equivalent to a top ten next year, which we still might get. We still have a first round draft pick next year. Our club’s plan was to hit the draft for three years, this is our fourth year of doing that.

I think it’s a big win for us.

Good points ...too bad andy walker is taken hey

Midfield is set..

Really excited the recruiting department so switched on to the reality we were still short on how many we had. Now I really think we got enough key position players and mids to really set up for the next decade. Amazing work since end of 2015 at ground zero. This time yesterday was really lamenting not having another pick between 1 and 69 but to find they had another pick in mind for a mid made my night. First real club to have a crack at this new live trading in a way to grab a player we wanted when we looked to be out of the running. Well done Blues. ****ing excellent direction shown.

Big gamble by GC with Ben King. Firstly they took the inferior twin and secondly why not take both to mitigate go home factor. I can see the SA boys back at the Crows/ Port in 2 years and Ben King using the desperate to play with my brother line in 2 years as well. Truly dumb trading.
They only needed picks 2&3 and should’ve cashed in with pick 6. The AFL suns just signed the death knell for this club.

This is why I wasn’t keen for Shiel. We would have paid a heap for him and probably cost us Setterfield & Stocker and maybe more. Given our position I didn’t like it. Now we have 2 young guns for the next decade instead of one for 5-6 years. We also still have money to retain all our young talent and maybe add more.

Couldn’t be happier [emoji847]

Also really pleased Gold Coast grabbed Luko and Rankine and did not shy away. Crows not getting any of the elite SA talent was pretty funny in end. I am sure they tried really hard to throw things at Gold Coast and Saints to get a pick really early but in end nobody was stupid enough to give those value picks up. Good to see.

There will rightly be some discussion around the Stocker pick-up.

I understand not letting talent you rated slide, should you have the chance to nab it.
My only question here, did we reach for the talent for talents sake or for needs, also.

I feel there's a lot more to this pick than meets they eye.
1. Have we taken ourselves out of the running for Kelly next year?
2. Have we a 'serious' midfield FA target next year?
3. Do we not rate next years draft?

This was a very calculated gamble and one we know the outcome of already. Would like to see the bigger picture.

MODS: Why is the List Management thread locked?

My thoughts, too. Poor Jack looked displeased when his name got read out at pick 2.

At least a broken jaw should have no ongoing issues. I liked the look of Caldwell, but 2 hamstrings before he has been drafted. Would worry he could become like Freeman.
