Late picks and the rookie draft continue to be disappointing. It's the one area that hasn't improved at all since SOS took over. I think we make some questionable drafting choices year after year. We try too hard to search for a hidden superstar, or try to extract value from the recently delisted in the mistaken belief that our development team is better than those at other clubs.

Hopefully I'm proven wrong.

Am I missing something or did Stack not get drafted at all?? I didn't think much of him from what I saw (which admittedly wasn't much) but there were quite a few predicting he'd go somewhere in the 2nd round. If he hasn't even been rookied, I wonder what would have caused the clubs to stay away...
Maybe he was the partying player Lyon was talking about on the radio.

It really seems to be the case though.
Once you've been invited to train at the club, you're just about a shoe-in for a place on the list.

No offence to the guys taken, but it does seem as though we don't take the rookie draft too seriously at all.

It’s got to be someone’s MO, as Agresta didn’t get to pick any rookie gems if they wanted to.
It does seem like the new way though for the rookie draft but a lot taken off the senior list for re-rookie’ing.

How many young players were taken in the rookie draft? Doesn't seem to be too many rated. We have 29 players under 23. We need some mature bodies

I’m happy with the rookie picks. Goddard a worthy investment for that Gorilla KPD which we still need to fill despite having macriedie and BSOS.

Bugg a senior body who can play forward and mid who is better option than mullet,O’Shea, lamb who played last year

Agree. Goddard is no surprise with Rowe gone, but will have to wait and see whether he'll be needed in the seniors or if guys like Weiters and Macreadie can cover that role this year. Bugg has insurance written all over him -- could fill a hole anywhere on the ground if we get smashed by injury, but will more than likely see out the year in the VFL. Hopefully they're both good blokes who can pass on some lessons to the kids and help their development while they're around.

We'll never find the next Eddie Betts or Sam Jacobs if we keep picking up these recycled hacks.

We won't have to pick up recycled players when our senior players are more competent in 2-3 years.

But for now, the VFL side needs hardened rookie bodies, until which time we can start being adventurous with the rookie draft again.

18, 8 of which were selected by just the 4 clubs.

Fine, but that doesn't address my point.

Seems that players that train with us, get picked up.
Now we can cite prudent evaluation beforehand, but let's have a quick look at recent history. It hasn't been great.

Assessment is done for a year or more on most players. Bringing players in is the like final test to see how they train and fit in. Seems smart to me. In the end it seemed Goddard & Bugg impressed or were more suited to our needs than Lamb Blakey Palmer & Fisher

Completely disagree with the complaints about the rookie draft. Haven’t you seen our last 3-4 *actual* drafts? We have an incredibly young list and there are enough speculative types there already. We need some mature backups who can plug gaps and act as human shields for the younger, more talented guys.

Like we saw last year with a number of these low-ceiling but mature age battlers, they can play a role and at least insulate our youth from being thrown to the wolves too savagely. The only sort of players we’d be taking in the rookie draft, instead of Goddard and Bugg, would likely just be less developed versions of Goddard and Bugg.

I expect in the coming years, as our list fills out, you’ll see plenty more flyers in later rounds/rookie draft. We just need a few of these mature types of players for insurance at the moment (even if it is bloody boring).

Reckon we already found them. In the national draft.

As per what Soapy V said - we use the rookie draft (or late ND picks) to get needs-based mature age players in. It's a reasonable strategy when you are otherwise just bringing in players 24 or under for three straight years and delisting anyone older than that who isn't 100% part of the future.

You know that can change quickly, either way, we now have appropriate options
It can change but I’ve seen enough of both. Macreadie is much better by foot and above average in the air ,he is also super courageous. I’m positive he’ll cone good with the right development.
