2 things ...We need to work on developing players better ..that's an area that's been our Achilles heel ...particularly now more than ever with all the young talented kids we have in the side ...we need to ensure players get the best out of themselves and realise their full potential ..I think these two areas of concern are going to be addressed now with the poaching of Hawthorns special performance fitness guru ..you only have to look at what he has done at hawthorn with the players at his disposal ..he has made average players into above average players
no question - players like sps might be the bell-whether for our improved development structures and techniques........

Adelaide take Jones 11 picks early and Mc Henry 12 picks early and get an A.

Probably on the back of one of his favourites Butts who from memory he had as a second rounder last year but failed to get drafted and has now been rookied.
Easiest thing is to just ignore his opinion and be happy with what we got............in SOS we trust..........but it is still a raffle because they are just human after all........plus that nightmare bloke takes himself too seriously, and if you read all the different draft analysis they all have a different point of view depending on their own tastes.........we needed mids and we got two of them early, so we did ok...........as someone else said, time will tell and we should be able to hang on to our new kids, whereas the GC ???

In 2017 we traded in future picks from Adelaide, Bulldogs and Geelong.

In 2018 those teams went from

Adelaide: 2nd > 12th
Bulldogs: 10th > 13th
Geelong: 3rd > 8th

Let's trust the process.

Still waiting for my royalties cheque ;)

Gotta say, despite what Chris Doerre (Knightmare) thinks, I'm pretty excited by the young talent we have coming in next year. They're kids and will take time, but like last year, I'm going to look forward to what they show during our games. Setterfield, Walsh and Stocker added to Dow, SPS, Fisher and LOB. It's shaping up to be an exciting young midfield with a really good mix of types the only flaw may be we lack a little speed.

A few other scribes are saying that the 3 guys * took are all project players and are long shots at best..........;)

I agree. Irving is going to be hot and cold, don't be surprised to see him drift out of games but at times he can come up with something exciting. The other kid is 65kgs and the other is another key forward, a type that they probably don't need. But yeah, all three will take time anyway. A grade project players...

shame you'll be the first to rip them apart the moment they show signs of struggling...........going by past performances......

Shame you have delusional memories Mr SPS basher.
criticizing a player is an aberration for me - a core theme for you.........sps basher.............that's golden :thumbsu:

So going into this draft there was plenty of support for trading Pick 1 for pick 3 & 6 (was never going to happen), pick 3 & 24 & some other combinations so we could capitalise on the top end talent in this year's "superdraft".

In a surprise to everyone, SOS traded next year's first round pick (somewhere between 3 & 6 by my slightly optimistic reckoning) for this year's pick 19 & Adelaide's 2019 first round pick (possibly pick 7-10 on my reckoning that some of Adelaide's top end talent are on the downward spiral). Outcome of this was that we ended up with the desired 2 picks in the first round, without trading Pick 1. I'm not seeing the concerns being raised about this. SOS delivered exactly what people were calling for while still being able to select Sam Walsh.

Once Stocker's name was called out I was content with how our draft had unfolded. The expected selection of BSOS & the surprise selection of O'Dwyer were just the extras to round out the draft.

I must admit that after reading the article Bugg wrote in relation to the Mills incident & his subsequent mindset, I am quite bullish about his selection. If nothing else, his defensive traits should put pressure on the likes of Garlett, Pickett & Fasolo to work on their defensive game. It could be this defensive aspect which could ultimately see Bugg given games ahead of the aforementioned trio if they don't work hard enough on defence.

All in all, a satisfying trade & draft period.

Ahh, so you're allowed to do it when they frustrate you, but I'm not.

Core theme my arse. I had a go at Weitering a few times last year. He's the only young player. It's the older blokes I have less patience for.

SPS in his 2nd season, has not completed a full pre-season yet due to injuries and you say he "was awful again"...

If 1 of Dow and O’Brien can take another step while we get games into Stocker and Walsh with similar output to them in 2018 we should see a huge improvement. Let alone bringing back doc, Kruezer, and a fit Murphy. I expect to see a 150% better team in 2019.

These may all be little things and may amount to nothing, but picking up trail after Bailey Smith.

1. His peers intimate he loves himself
2. His peers state that he's a high user of Social Media.
3. Suggestions that he was the guy that had himself a medical report stating he shouldn't go interstate.
4. Apparently took down an instagram post that may have been seen to be offensive to some.

If all are true, is there anything to make out of it all? Maybe not.

Part 4 of this was a storm in a teacup. No different to most of "the batchelors" one liners. Nothing in it.

Hopefully one of those two (or both) can emulate Fishers second year and Fisher can take another step forward (if he can emulate Cripps 3rd year progression it would be great although that is optimistic)

Given the volume of players, under the age of 23, at the start of March next year (27), progression should never be viewed as linear, nor improving at the same rate. Guys like Fisher and Charlie may only increase 5%, yet someone like Cuningham may increase by 40%, of course, some may stagnate or even decrease in output.

View the progression as a whole

My take on our draft period, after absorbing each selection/live trade

  • Walsh - Despite not rating him as the best player nor the best mid, think the selection is a strong one in terms of what he will add to the group, which is stability, consistency and as mentioned numerous times, more bust proof than most of the draftees
  • Stocker - Rated him as a latish 1st, while the club rated him in the top 10. Either way the selection brings talent forward a year, which is a benefit given the makeup of our squad. With having only 2 players as genuine extractors, Cripps and Kennedy, in time Stocker will allow both to have more opportunity to recover, while resting forward, as we know both are dangerous, due to their marking power. While most people will assess the outcome of the trade, adding Stocker now is a sound strategy, as IMHO, he would have been in the conversation as a top 6 prospect for next year
  • The rest - I believe both O'Dywer and BSOS, would have been available in the rookie draft. I would have preferred a mix of either one of Scholl/McKenzie (rookied)/Hanrahan/Richards (both undrafted) & Grundy. Then rookie, O'Dwyer, BSOS, leaving the one spot open, later in the year for the best mature age player, from a list of Goddard, Bugg, etc etc. Given where these late selections, were taken, it will not make or break our progression

Opinions are like arseholes, however I back the judgement of full time professionals with a proven track record.

And I think the Carlton drafting in the 3 drafts prior to this one was very good. Therefore I'm all for all of our draftees this year.

It will be a bit of a luxury to develop players through the vfl this year, instead of in the afl.

E.g. BSOS is well down the pecking order, and should be focused on a consistent year at vfl level. Macreadie, Goddard, TDK, Kerr all ahead of him and are borderline best 22 currently.

Walsh and stocker may even start the year in vfl.

Bugg will be a really good addition I feel. Direct Wright replacement. Will play every game barring a massive form slump. Newman also is a lock rd 1. Fasolo I think will surprise, will be a good player for us.

Stocker: The way the trade went down, it gave me a lot of confidence that the Club had faith in me. I want to repay that.
Stocker: I've always played with a bit of a chip on my shoulder so I like that extra motivation.
Walsh: It was great to meet 'Wallsy', he's an icon of the game.
