Spent last night watching some replays from 2017 where we played some really good footy and where in most games in the last quarter, looking at the team then compared to what we have lost since(Gibbs) and gained (plenty) barring injuries again we can make a big push next year with Doc back and Amos back as defensive line coach. I think we need to look at last year as more of an aberration than a form line and should be really bullish about next year with the improvement in talent added since 17 Dow, O’Brien, Kennedy Setterfield, McGovern, Newman, Fasolo, Walsh, Stocker and we get back Cunningham who played some good footy in 17 and Williamson the same another season into Fisher and SPS, Harry playing regular games at FF, the improvement in personnel since 17 alone is stark and that’s without player improvement on top, we should be looking at a big jump next year, I don’t want to say it and jinx us but I think we can get into the top half of the ladder with luck with injuries, optimistic probably, but I genuinely believe we have that in us, with the players we have added since 17 added to the way we played in 17 it isn’t that far fetched if you disregard 18 as an aberration which I genuinely do due to the injuries and circumstances of said injuries.

2018 is not an aberration. We simply got too many changes to have cohesion yet and it would be crazy to expect so many players still getting used to playing senior football and football together as a team to realistically expect a massive jump to top half of ladder. It will take time, accept reality, we got a young list with lots of talent but they still got to learn to play together and learn to win together. 8 wins in 2019 would be amazing improvement in itself. top half ladder is 13 wins territory. C'mon, get serious. Aim for 8, expect 6 or 7 and we probably making good progress in 2019. I think a big jump will happen in 2020, not 2019.
If we can just play better bursts of football for quarters next year without the big losses of this year the actual win number if still short of double figures will be massive improvement of what we had in 2018.

We will win 7-11 games next year from where I see our inclusions to the list plus growth in our existing young talent.

Hope so, not banking on it though, that is for sure. Easier said than done. Players and coaching staff have a lot of hard work to do to improve that much in such a short space of time. We lost 20 games last season. Our last game was over 100 point loss to an average team. Development, bring it on coaching staff and players.

Hence the “Probably Optimistic” part of the post. And the lack of cohesion last year was due to injuries which where an aberration in terms of the number of said injuries. Thereby making the season an aberration.

Tigers have the right idea here;
Richmond applies for permission to have Sydney Stack train with a view to adding him under new rookie rules. http://m.afl.com.au/news/2018-11-26/tigers-seek-draft-lifeline-for-overlooked-wa-star

Surely the last thing Richmond need is another small forward.

Edwards, Rioli, Butler, Castagna, Bolton, Higgins.

But yes, I agree that getting these sorts of players across to train with the club early in the season is a smart move. Take a look at how they integrate with the rest of the list and how committed they are, and the option is there to secure them during the supplemental selection window. If they don't meet the expectations, they can be sent home whenever with no inconvenience to the club.

And 11 wins would have us 1 win from the top half of the ladder based on last years ladder. Optimistic yes, impossible far from it.

Who will we look at for this last rookie spot, any rumours? Will it be Blakey or Fisher or will the club go for a kid overlooked in the draft?

Personally I want to give a kid a go and leave the Northern Blues players to addition for a spot come the mid season draft.

These may all be little things and may amount to nothing, but picking up trail after Bailey Smith.

1. His peers intimate he loves himself
2. His peers state that he's a high user of Social Media.
3. Suggestions that he was the guy that had himself a medical report stating he shouldn't go interstate.
4. Apparently took down an instagram post that may have been seen to be offensive to some.

If all are true, is there anything to make out of it all? Maybe not.
I kind of get a Mr Wonderful vibe from him based on nothing but my gut feel. A bit of the look at Moi going on.

Egg is a good source of protein. It also washes off. Doesn't matter how it looks as long as Stocker is a player.

Even if he isn't any good (touch wood) the issue is talent identification rather than the trade itself.

We may have another terrible year, but we have done everything possible to avoid that.

Now if the coach isn't up to it or if we cop lots of injuries again, nothing the recruiting team could do would stop that.

It was a calculated risk. And probably the right time to take it.

Early enough, that if it comes off we have time to build on it (develop Stocker) for a year before we rise significantly. And if it doesn't come of we have traded and early first for two late firsts (worse case). It's not great but not that bad either.

Edit: I forgot to mention that most of us have Carlton trading out our 1st in 2019 anyway.

What does it matter if it's pick 3 or 14? We still won't be drafting with it. The only difference would be if we get a 2nd or 3rd back when packaged with our 2020 1st.

If you take the Shiel trade as a guideline, then if it's a late 1st in 2019, perhaps we don't get the 2nd back.

If we are getting Kelly or Taranto, who cares? It might end up being 2019 1st and 2020 1st for Stocker and Kelly.

Is that a win?

Once again, how it looks to the wider footy community is irrelevant.

Agree KMB.

I also really like the positive message it sends to the playing group and club staff.

I.e. we expect to outperform external expectations.

so heads down and bums up - get to work lads.

I would rather always be an optimist and proven wrong than a pessimist and always be right :D

Is it even a 2019 pre-season interview without someone mentioning Andrew Russell?

Very good point.
Just don't want him to afforded the keys to the city.

Not his fault for the build up, but can we just put him away in the background and a long way behind someone that goes by the name of Bolton

I'm an avid listener of Sports Today on 3AW (occasionally infuriating).

I was away last week - did anyone hear what Gerard and Dwaynes reaction was to the Adelaide/Stocker trade ??

Completely agree with you, I have also been watching 2017 games. If we had more of our top players in this year it would have made a huge difference. I also wonder if they were holding back the best team in the last 6 games in order to get the top pick. Trying out some players one last time. With the 1st round pick gamble, to me that sends a message Carlton are very bullish & maybe Adelaide’s just a little too cocky.
