The season is beginning for a lot of these youngsters so I wanted to open up a thread for Carlton supporters to give their thoughts on those we should be looking at in the 2018 draft. We have several father/sons this year with Ben Silvagni, Oskar Manton, Will Hickmont, and more mature possibilities Liam Hickmont & Jake Bradley.

Our picks leading up to this years trade period are:
Carlton Blues - 1st round pick
Western Bulldogs - 2nd round pick
Adelaide Crows - 2nd round pick
Geelong Cats - 4th round pick
Carlton Blues - 5th round pick
Carlton Blues - 6th round pick

Our first pick almost guarantees us a star-in-the-making with the likes of:
Jack Lukosius (KF), Izak Rankine (HF/M), Sam Walsh (M), Max King (KF/R), Ben King (KF/KD) Jye Caldwell (M), Ian Hill (HF/M), Jack Bytel (M), and Connor Rozee (HF/M), just to name a few, who all showed promising signs last year.

With our next two picks we shall have a lot of talent to choose from so bearing in mind it's this early on... who should be on our radar for our picks and what do we need most for our side?

I was told yesterday Carlton looking to swap pick 1 in a 3 way swap of picks

Gc trading pick 3 to either port or crows
Will get either 5 15 port or 8 13 crows

Gc then to trade pick 2 and pick 15/13
To Carlton for pick one

Gc want to ensure they get lukousis
Carlton will then select Walsh pick 2
Only feasible if GC actually think we take Luko at 1.

I played junior footy then went on to play vfa under 19s for coburg ... A while back tho a good 25 years ago .
How I see it is this. You can be a good player with or without a high level of footy smarts. For instance; a player can be athletically gifted and be able to extract the ball when it is in the immediate vicinity and then use pace to burst away and get the ball forward. This type of player I have seen then have trouble being able to find the footy on a lead or be able to get out into space at the right time. So their footy IQ limits them being able to be a gun.
Alternatively you can have a player that may not have the athleticism and pace but they position themselves well in a contest for the ball to come to them, they have good awareness and always seem to step out of trouble when in tight and can chip a pass or handball to a teammate that the player on the burst wouldn’t have seen. They read the play well to know to run to space when others run to the ball and they get the sneaky one out the back. This is footy smarts or footy IQ. Superstars generally have a mix of both of these abilities but good players can have either but not both.
IMO JSOS has this and has shown it. He just lost confidence last year at times getting experience in different positions. He does have footy smarts and will be a good player.

Fair crack ...oh plz not another silvagni ..having one that can't play is bad enough ..rather hickmott if their dead set on bringing in a father and son

I hear this word a lot ..'footy smarts' it doesn't mean anything ..how smart do you have to be on the footy field plz ..even dumb ones can play the game ..I give you Eddie Betts

Wow.

Have you considered trying to make your point without making derogatory comments about players?

Because while you may think you're being edgy, it actually comes across desperate and attention-seeking - like you can't hold a conversation without it being argumentative.

I have met and spoken with Eddie at length. A great guy and real smart. Funny and intelligent.
I dont know what your problem is but you are displaying the traits of a troll just looking for a rise from people. Maybe time to change tactics.

Let’s not compare JSOS to the full back of the century. A better reference is how he compares with other pick 53s in the draft. On that basis I’d say he’s tracking pretty well.

JSOS didn’t come to Carlton as a complete footballer. He was/is pretty raw but he has talent and footy smarts. He also has determination and dedication, so there is definitely something to work with.

In 2019 there is a good chance that he will be overtaken by more talented players on the list but that doesn’t mean he’s finished, it just means that he will continue developing his game in the VFL, away from the AFL spotlight. That could actually be a good thing for Jack’s game.
Not trying to compare them at all. I was responding to another poster. What I did was suggest that its a different era and comparisons can't easily be made.

That would be just so dumb from Gold Coast.
Instead of setting out for specific targets, Gold Coast again go scattergun.

Just can't see that coming about, as GC should be confident in who they will get by now.
If anything, it's more likely that GC aim for The Saints #4 with #6 and a second rounder. i.e. Saints still get their man and GC know exactly who they're getting.

yeah that makes no sense on GC's part.

I think GC should go into the draft with 2,3 & 6. If they do 3 & 6 for 1 and want Walsh and Luko then great.

A poster said that had we landed Shiel, Rankine would be the one SOS picks which i agree.

Pick 1 is on a needs basis IMO and Walsh is what we need.

Blues are considering Izak Rankine at pick 1, per Cal Twomey.

That would be interesting. He's the hardest one to judge IMO. Could be an absolute star or just average. Hard to tell for me unless you meet and speak with him.

If SOS & Co believe he is worth it, then great. With his talent if he stood up he could really make a difference to us. Certainly the type we need.

I'd say were just dangling the carrot for Adelaide/PA. Make them think twice about our pick. Can't hurt, I suppose. If one of them ends up paying massive overs for #1, then I'm fine with that. Otherwise I'll happily welcome Walsh to the club, because I really believe that that's what'll happen without a trade

I'd say that no carrots are dangling. Its just that they have to write or say something each day. Throwaway stuff to fill the airwaves and printed media.

Doesn't really help them if Carlton take Lukosius and GCS take Rankin. I guess they would be happy with Walsh or King.

I agree with your general premise and I'd add that smart players with skills, but not necessarily athleticism, can still have a high ceiling.

For a couple of years.

In the event Walsh somehow ends up at the Suns, make no mistake we’ll be telling him we still love him (remember how desperately he wants to be a Blue) and we’ll welcome him back in 2 years time:cool:

No doubt, but I was talking about the Adelaide clubs.

Not surprising and that makes 5 players that have been rumoured to be considered by the club

All spin and hype, it’s about to increase too , can’t imagine Wednesday and Thursday.
Logically to continue reinstating our midfield it’s Samuel Walsh by a country mile. If we want Mr. Magic to help in the midfield and forward line it’s , Izak Rankine, but will he remain a Bagger? flight risk is the issue.
