You and Blueballs99 should get together. He can fill you in on why there is no such thing as a smart footballer and you can regail him about how there are no raw footballers.

It would be silly to have not tried to manufacture something more interesting should we genuinely be considering Rankine, but you have to admit that for all a club like our needs right now, he makes for the best possible fit.....by way of player, by way of excitement and getting bums onto seats..
Again, I have little doubt that there may be some areas of the club that would love him, but they shouldn't, nor will have the final say.

All just a bit of 'I have to say something', 'we have to make it more exciting and unpredictable' and maybe even some, 'Let's cast out a few red herrings' happening. No harm done.


ADDITION: It makes sense for us to make a bit of noise about Rankine, to see what we can wrench away fro GC.
If they're committed to at least two of the S.A. boys, they may just want to guarantee the one they feel we may be interested in.
I think it's a gamble for the CFC to be playing, if indeed they are, but what the hell....

Personally, I just think we are doing our homework in case we get a huge offer for pick 1. Twomey has linked us to Rankine a few times now, as you said it’s not really surprising. Unless we get a ridiculous offer, I see us taking the kid we rate number 1. If that happened to be Rankine then I would expect a trade with GC for pick 3 to extract value from pick 1. If we rate Walsh number 1 like I suspect then I just don’t see us trading, it needs to be a great trade to trade away the kid we rate number 1.

If we take Walsh or Rankine I'm going to bloody happy anyway and it can be easily justified which ever way we go.

How I see it is this. You can be a good player with or without a high level of footy smarts. For instance; a player can be athletically gifted and be able to extract the ball when it is in the immediate vicinity and then use pace to burst away and get the ball forward. This type of player I have seen then have trouble being able to find the footy on a lead or be able to get out into space at the right time. So their footy IQ limits them being able to be a gun.
Alternatively you can have a player that may not have the athleticism and pace but they position themselves well in a contest for the ball to come to them, they have good awareness and always seem to step out of trouble when in tight and can chip a pass or handball to a teammate that the player on the burst wouldn’t have seen. They read the play well to know to run to space when others run to the ball and they get the sneaky one out the back. This is footy smarts or footy IQ. Superstars generally have a mix of both of these abilities but good players can have either but not both.
IMO JSOS has this and has shown it. He just lost confidence last year at times getting experience in different positions. He does have footy smarts and will be a good player.

A bluff by whom? The club havent said a word all along. All the talk is external noise and speculation.

Could also be the best thing for Rankine to get out of SA and away from his mates, if all the off field innuendo is to be believed.

Not really sure how to feel passing on Walsh given we’re still in need of another topline midfielder. A Smith/Rankine combo would have been the ideal scenario had we managed to wrangle picks 3 and 6 from the Gold Coast.

Brisbane weren’t afraid to take a mid-sized forward at number 1 last year, and it looks like that’ll pay dividends. Rankine’s got a few more tricks and might just have even more midfield potential.

I think the club will still take the conservative option, but this talk definitely adds a bit more interest going into the draft.

At our stage of development it’s got to be Samuel Walsh has the pedigree of a chanmpion, future captain and pledged allegence form the out set speaks volumes for his maturity and professionalism.
Love Rankine the only player that can make 2 or 3 opponents look like witches hat, but Samual Walsh will do the Navey Blue very proud.

Rankine 2017 highlights were the best I've ever seen . He had Judd type break away speed and evasiveness and that allowed for terrific decision making.

Strangely he looks heavier, slower and less agile in 2018, was there some goss that his effort had fallen away this year? His highlights in 2018 (to me anyway) and the games I saw he was a great opportunist but he was not making the play and not applying the 2017 work rate without the ball.

Still a remarkable talent but we have to get the lean roo dog who can influence the game when we aren't in control not just a guy who can get on the end of handballs and passes.

Theres the conundrum ...until he plays at the top level the real worth won't be known. Lukosius is in the same uncertain place for us observers.
And yet I think Walsh we can already tell how he will go. Brilliantly consistently effectively wether the team is winnng or losing.

LM, you and I both know that Rankine's issues are not his football talent. His flaws, with some other aspects are reasons why most football watchers have him at a wide range. I suspect, that even if Adelaide don't improve on their first pick at 8, he could still slide to them, which would smell of draft tampering

As for suggesting Rankine's floor is Rioli, that could be a tad premature also, given Cyril already had a better team ethos at the same age

I can’t recall Rioli entering any top tier conversations around draft time - was always 10-15 draft range. His highlights while exceptional aren’t as good as Rankine’s either. You’d be hard pressed to find many (maybe O’Meara’s) as good as Rankine’s.

IIRC played in the midfield for St Mary’s for didn’t spend as much time in the midfield playing for Scotch but I could be wrong.
