It's why I am keen to trade next years first. If we could somehow land Walsh & Rankine I'd take it and run

Damn.....do you have to do that?
Let's just tell ourselves it won't happen.....It can't happen.....It's not allowed to happen.....but if it did happen..... :)

The rumblings are becoming quite loud for Rankine.

Seems strange. Would have thought if we were keen on Rankine, we would trade pick 1.

He'd definitely be there at pick 2.

The issue is I don't think anyone wants to trade Top 10 picks this year. They are just to good

My bet is the Top 10 won't change at all

Perhaps the AFL won’t allow GC to trade their picks.
Sam Walsh is obviously the better choice for Suns and will help to stabelize team structure over time.
We have multipule leadership options so not desperate for him.

We're in pretty desperate need of mids that can spread from the contest.

Twomey posed the question, Cyril Rioli or Trent Cotchin?

Cotchin for mine every day of the week.

Seriously though, I've been banging on now about retaining next years first for what may come about via a senior player trade, but if Rankine was on the end of the hook this year after securing Walsh, one would have to let go and allow next year to take care of itself then.

Not sure why we're even discussing the possibility, although I'm having to wipe the drooling off my keyboard, as I type.

Agree can’t keep the smile off the dial, can you image Rankine serving the ball on a platter to Charlie, Mitch and Harry? I’d promise GS whatever they want within reason of course.

Oh dear, this Rankine talk ...

I want him at the Blues so badly that I’m starting to dream and get carried away! ... I’ve been trying to remain rational about it by telling myself I’ll be more than happy with Walsh ... that was easy to do before smoke started swirling around Rankine at 1 ... I know it’s crazy, but I think I’m going to be somewhat disappointed if we pick Walsh now. Like Austin Powers, I like to live dangerously - and it always works out for him in the long run! :)

We don’t need to be conservative. Just choose the most talented junior ever seen [emoji322]

I think it's simple.

Select Rankine and make him a Blue. Let GCS get Walsh plus Caldwell or Smith and we get them in 2 years when he is ready to come home.

Hence why Collingwood are happy for DeGoey to get 15 touches playing forward rather than 30 playing in the midfield. Robbie Gray the same.
For me if we are confident with our list we go Rankine, if not (which after our worst season in 100 years or something is understandable) go Walsh
I think people are forgetting just how good Will Setterfield is, would have probably gone pick 1 if not connected to GWS, so really after getting him we probably could take a punt on Rankine at 1 would solve our small forward problem and anything else he can do is a bonus.

As much as I hate to admit it, I reckon the GC experiment could collapse in 2 years, then they all will be coming/going home, with Walsh nominating us....imagine that..then the AFL launch the Tasmanian Devils!! And re-introduce priority picks.....by then we will a finals regular and reminiscing about the days when we had a Top 10 pick!! Cannot wait for this turmoil to be a distant memory, as we make room in the trophy cabinet.

Could be our thinking, not that it’s the correct view to take, but if Setterfield projects to be as good as we think then coupled with the growth in our mids we might be OK for young mids. Add one or two mature mids at the latter end of the draft, and we’ve got a reasonably balanced mix.

I think we’re still lacking some pace on the outside, but that won’t be addressed by bringing in Walsh in any case.

Casboult has none
Nah. Levi has enough to run up the wing to the right spot to take contested marks (at the very least). Just doesn't bring others in to play in the way the players with full footy smarts do, IMO.

The late mail is sos is gonna spring a surprise and select izak rankine ..just got back from work not sure if its already been mentioned .

A dog can run in a straight line and catch a ball doesn’t make it an AFL footballer.

If GCS don’t do 1 for 3 and 6 there could be a second way for us to get say Rankine and a top mid:
Trade 1 to GCS for 2 and 24
Trade 2 to Port for 5 and 15
Trade 15 and 24 to either WB, Crows or GWS for 7, 8 or 9

I assume that GCS would take Walsh with 1, Port would take Lukosius with 2 and GCS would take King with 3 and Saints perhaps Smith with 4 which would leave Rankine to us at 5. I don’t believe GCS or Saints would take Rankine but who knows for sure. And no one is really overpaying in terms of points in the above trades so could work for everyone.

Nah. No need to malign the strength Levi has, it doesn't detract from others having smarts in more facets of the game.

Just having some fun at Levi’s expense I actually think there is still a place for him in our side next year at times against certain teams, he does a reasonable job as second ruck and would prefer him doing it than McKay risking himself, needs to get his desperation to chase and tackle back like when he was younger and really smash packs with intent to hurt. Just an easy target with the stupid things he does.

Carlton:

#1 Sam Walsh
#61 Tyron Smallwood
#64 Sam Fletcher
#69 Ben Silvagni

Carlton was tricky to pick for late, after clearly selecting Sam Walsh with the first pick. Walsh is the standout midfielder in the draft crop, and Blues fans should be thrilled to have him coming on board, as a safe, 200-game player and future captain. He is joined by mid/forward, Tyron Smallwood who just oozes X-factor and looks like great value late, as well as inside midfielder Sam Fletcher who bleeds for any club he plays for. Wrapping up the draft with father-son selection Ben Silvagni, Blues fans should be pretty pleased with the value they have received considering their late picks.
