I like Caldwell more than Rankine.
sheepy with a misplaced bullet.......
To me, Walsh looks like the type of guy who would motor on till he's 35-36 y.o. in an outside role.
Lets get 400 games out of him on the wing![]()

Caldwell is my favourite in this draft too. Been some guns that would have been considered for number 1 in their draft year if not for injuries but clubs cautiously passed; Judd & Selwood are a couple.Caldwell looks/reads really good to me. Class.
You never know if or at what stage injuries will/might/might not hit a player, but by jeez i'll be happy to have most likely Walsh or maybe Rankine who have virtually no injury history. What a rarity that is for our list.
Caldwell and Smith just subliminally feel like injury types whereas Walsh and Izak don't.
An injury free Carlton player not sponsored by elastoplast......What........ Welcome Sam.
Can't get my head around this mindset.
List development is perpetual - it doesn't end. We'll be adding new players every single year for as long as the competition exists. Rankine this year and a balanced mid next year isn't all that different to Walsh this year and a small forward next year. The key consideration should be which type of player are you more likely to be able to secure in 2019 or 2020. To me - that's a midfield accumulator. Recruitment needs to be, in some ways, opportunistic. As nice as it would be to lay out a 36 step guide to building a premiership list in a swish powerpoint presentation, the reality is that you don't know what picks you'll have in any given year, who will be available at those picks, and which pre-listed players you may be able to lure over and for what price.
Let's look at meat & potatoes production mids and x-factor small-ish forwards taken in the first round over the last few years:
2017
Mids - Brayshaw, Dow, LDU, Cerra, Clark, Coffield, O'Brien, Richards
Smalls - Rayner, Stephenson, Higgins
2016
Mids - McGrath, Taranto, McCluggage, Setterfield, SPS, Scrimshaw, Brodie, Bowes, Simpkin, Venables, Perryman, Gallucci, Berry, Powell-Pepper
Smalls - Ainsworth, Florent
2015
Mids - Mills, Oliver, Parish, Hopper, Ah Chee, Kennedy, Fiorini, Lovell, Cuningham
Smalls - Milera, Rioli, Gresham
2014
Mids - Brayshaw, De Goey, Ahern, Duggan, Ellis, Weller
Smalls - Petracca, Pickett, Cockatoo, Garlett
2013
Mids - Kelly, Bontempelli, Scharenberg, Aish, Salem, Freeman, Sheed, Cripps, Jones, Lang, Dunstan, Acres
Smalls - Billings, Lennon
If we're satisfied with our ability to retain Rankine, he should probably be the priority this year. You simply don't get the opportunity to draft a player of his skill set all that often. Whereas while Walsh may indeed be "better" than many other midfielders, there is always a high representation of ball winners at the top end of the draft and we can afford to invest multiple draft picks over multiple years to continually strengthen that part of our list.
Furthermore, a team will usually only have 1 x-factor small forward on the park, and getting the "right" one has a huge impact on performance. Whereas most sides will run 8-12 midfielders (full or part time), and the collective output is more impactful than any one player getting their 30 touches.
All that being said - I don't want Rankine with Pick 1. If we want Rankine, continue to play the game and make all the right noises about Walsh, and draw an offer from GC. Pick 3 gets Rankine, and we can secure, at the very least, a decent second round pick in the bargain, which nets us that extra midfield accumulator (Stocker, RCD, Valente, McHenry - good chance one of these guys is there in the mid 20's). If we can get more than a second rounder included (extra pick, future pick upgrade), all the better.
we would need to get GWS number 9 for next years first. Just on pure fairness of what we are likely to give back (3-8) and Caldwell will be gone by 11. Probably even by 9 anyway.I haven’t seen Caldwell’s footage but he seems to have a lot of momentum on here and with some experts. I wonder if GWS will be willing to trade Pick 11 for our 2019 first. They also have Picks 9, 19 and 25 so may be willing to trade 11. SOS may want to trade to get Caldwell if he’s still available at 11. Crows may also be willing to trade 13 for our 2019 first. Will have to also exchange their 2019 second pick for our 2019 third round pick. But it should work if SOS really rates Caldwell.

Let’s just focus on one race here... The RACE to #17![]()
It's on the AFL website. Can anyone access the phantom draft on the HS now?
Cheers mate. Interesting dogs will look to trade their pick
Cavarra and walker is interesting
I agree and also the doomsday scenario is we get screwed with injuries and win the wooden spoon again next year.we would need to get GWS number 9 for next years first. Just on pure fairness of what we are likely to give back (3-8) and Caldwell will be gone by 11. Probably even by 9 anyway.
Considering we got in 4 players in the trade period imo the blues recruitment team are doing the right thing. 2 additions to the forward line. A midfielder and a back pocket all definitely needed, now to me our biggest need is an electric player for the forward line that can pinch hit through the midfield. Izak rankine will be an absolute superstar , we would be mad not to take him. Yes walsh will be a good player, but we have cunningham polson and fisher who might come on to fill another midfield spot so walsh is not as bigger need as everyone bangs on about imo. To me its our forward line that has been absolutely inept for the last few years and we are addressing that this year. And wright retiring is telling me we might be looking at a replacement for him thats not fasolo.
I forgot Murph. A fit Murphy without the Captaincy and now having the big bodies to help could be a very good player in 2019.
Ive got zero concerns about Fisher coming good. Jesus. You are desperately reaching if you are banking on Cunningham, Polson and to a lesser extent Fisher to come good.. Walsh is the exact type of player we need, I agree we also need a small forward, which is why I have said we should be throwing everything at Daniel Rioli to come next year when he is out of contract. Our midfield was a disaster this year, it was Cripps or bust.. Now we expect Dow to improve again, SPS to continue to improve and add Walsh to that mix and we are starting to look like a handy midfield.
Our fwd line hasnt functioned because the delivery, and ball movement from our midfield has been sooo atrocious that they have had no chance. I am also not convinced Rankine ever becomes a midfielder.
