Again, I see it the same. Neither shirk a contest, but nor do the have a natural hardness of a Viney
We have Crippa for that anyway
Disagree, Cotchin's kicking is quite similar to Selwood, and Walsh will be similar to both.

Selwood does not have much punch to his kick. Bryce Gibbs is a far superior kick than Selwood; yet Selwood has been the better player. Hence, why I don't worry about Walsh and his so-called kicking weakness. He'll be more than fine in the same way Cotchin and Selwood have been fine.
I know they're just highlights but I don't really see any problem with his kicking, just seems to either over/under power them when not kicking long.
Similar to Stephenson's short kicking before drafted, if he tightens that up then wouldn't his kicking be considered a strength?
(directed at both)

*Not comparing kicking but just that they had the same concern no?

So with Walsh and BSOS all but locked in, what do we want to see with the other late pick?

A Gibbons type mature mid who could play right away and improve our depth?
Another young small forward with potential?
A specific player (name them)?
Nice call Matty....I popped over to the Cow's forum the other day, and they were having a 'nearest the pin' with their draft picks (with or without a trade)....was actually a pretty good idea, bit late for us now though.

Pure guess, but here goes.....
Walsh (mid)
Angus Hanrahan (mid/forward)
Michael Gibbons (small forward)
BSOS - we're committed to picking him (swing?)

Rookie:
Blakey (lock down defender)
Fisher (mid/forward)
Goddard/Bugg (defender/defensive mid)

In other words, apart from Walsh and BSOS, I got no idea

That's the part that so undersold by those just skimming highlights and profiles of all draftees. All these qualities in one player is so bloody rare. Amazing to have bad games be so much higher than other kids bad games.

Agree, especially he's not a Tom Boyd esque number 1 who got that way due to his height/size compared to the opposition he was playing against in his junior career, Walsh has been playing in a position against a lot of kids around the same height and weight and still destroyed.. I hear Lukosius is a gun, but really had one or two standout games... etc etc.

I completely disagree with this sentence. It would also suggest we take no other kids in this draft, which stagger me

We need small/mid-sized goal-kickers, a running back. We don't need any more young mids after taking the best in a few hours time.
I don'k know what's so staggering about that. It's somewhat clear to me. Complete the midfield portfolio next year, with the right senior players.

List Management has to consider types that can play roles required and if that happens to be a mid that can be developed into a back-line position then fine.
Let's just not take HBF'ers that we feel may be developed into mids, though. Never again, please.

Upshot: I'm glad we haven't a second or third rounder being wasted on a mid this draft. Much have preferred McGovern.

Harker what you may want and what you get will be 2 different things

I would find it almost impossible that we only use 2 picks in this draft.

Note, I agree that Walsh does not have elite foot skills.
He short-hops some of his kicks especially during link-plays.

But he is nothing like Paul Kelly in regards to being a poor kick.

He is reasonable kick, who will likely get a bit better, roughly to Selwood/Cotchin level.

We delisted 2 mids and have recruited 1 and will draft Walsh - Net gain of zero. We are still 2-3 mids short on our list. NB's were playing without any listed midfielders for much of last year.

How many games do you think Kerridge and Graham would have played last year if Murphy, Docherty, Williamson, Cuningham, Kennedy & Fisher were fit for the full year?

Far easier to get a top talent with outstanding attitude, character and work-ethic to improve his kicking accuracy and penetration than it would be to teach a ton of other things. If this is a hang-up of people regarding Walsh, they need to move on pretty quickly. Because once he arrives at the club on Monday (or before), he won't take long to show us why we made the right call.

If Gold Coast take Luko and Rankine at 2&3 I predict GoldCoast will be gone within 5 years tops maybe less, need to take King twins and a mid like Caldwell or even better Smith who played with the Kings at Sangringham, best chance at retention and only chance of survival.

Won’t be at club on Monday is doing his VCE exams.

Can someone please explain why, and the advantage and disadvantage, of us having nominated BSOS. Apologies in advance if it has already been addressed; I can be bothered searching through the multitude of posts.

Thanks.

This is our biggest issue we need to be drafting gun players with our second and third round selections. I don't like the fact we're traded two second rounders this year for Mcgovern. Not sure he's who we need. Time wil tell I guess

Tyron Smallwood for one and whoever slides to one of our picks

Ah that's right. No dramas. Can imagine the club would want to get him out there ASAP and will no doubt have a walk-through over the weekend or early next week.

Pros and Cons of that are dependent on who you ask and it wouldn't matter - he has been nominated, likely because the club genuinely rates him. He seems to have some real AFL potential qualities and has top-tier pedigree so we obviously deem him worth a list spot.

Quality.... Quantity.
Keep players on the park.
Extra year into the youth.
Raise standards

Big difference I would have thought

So... is rankine better suited for us. Or walsh. Cause i think rankine for the future. Walsh for the now. But if walsh is anything like josh kelly... then i just dont no anymore

This

Everyone was banging on during the season that we need more/better midfielders, with Kerridge and Graham gone, we have/will replace them with Setterfield and pick 1. We have let go of ASOS, JGM, Rowe replacements MM, BOS and possibly Goddard

We need more midfielders that are also capable flankers, forward and back, the likes of a Caddy, Duggan types

We delisted two ordinary, depth mids, and have replaced them with the midfielders the club rated number 1 in the 2016 and 2018 drafts.

The net result might not be "more" mids. But it's a trickle down effect that means the two "worst" midfielders getting a senior game in any given week get replaced by two potentially elite ones.

Cripps, Murphy, Curnow, Dow, Fisher, SPS, Kennedy, O'Brien, Cuningham, Thomas / Pickett, Polson, Lang, Kerridge, Graham
Cripps, Murphy, Curnow, Dow, Fisher, SPS, Setterfield, Walsh, Kennedy, O'Brien / Cuningham, Thomas, Pickett, Polson, Lang

If we draw the line at 10 mids in the starting 22, the changes have improved the senior midfield group, and consequently strengthened the group of players providing injury cover.

And this year isn't the end of the process. We'll likely add 2+ midfielders each year from here on out, and not many of the names on that second line are needing to be cut from the list any time soon.
