List Mgmt. Carlton's 2018 Draft Thread II

If Gold Coast take Luko and Rankine at 2&3 I predict GoldCoast will be gone within 5 years tops maybe less, need to take King twins and a mid like Caldwell or even better Smith who played with the Kings at Sangringham, best chance at retention and only chance of survival.
Don’t understand what keeps driving this argument. Why would the king twins be less likely to leave Gold Coast when one of the twins is the only one of the four to publically state he’d prefer to stay in his home state.

I read a hypothetical in an article where a Giants player gets a bid at 16, they can match with 25 and 52 and spend 19.

I swear the AFL were trying to curb this a little a year or two back. Making it up on the fly again.
Alright I'm caught up again, looks like the change you're referring to is that clubs have a window to make a pick trade while matching a bid. So if their next pick was shortly after, they can maximise their draft position by using the residual points to trade up.

So they cannot bypass picks when matching bids, but they can trade them out in response to one.

I don't feel/see that in the most.
Again, we seem to be looking for more and more youth without honestly assessing the list we have.

Let me ask you this?
Which of the mids that will be around between 25 -50 will make us better?
Which of the talls that will be around that mark will be better than what we have?
Small goal-kickers maybe, but now we're narrowing the field and looking at something that may not even be there at those picks.

Sorry for the repeat, but I have to agains say: It's not more youth we need right now.
Analyse our list and you may find something similar.
Mids - Turner, McKenzie, Hamill, Rowbottom, O'Neill, O'Halloran, Butters, Stocker
Talls - Williams, Reid
Flankers/utilities - Sturt, McHenry, Hill

And this year isn't the end of the process. We'll likely add 2+ midfielders each year from here on out, and not many of the names on that second line are needing to be cut from the list any time soon.

And it is much easier to find two mids every year from here on out than get a McGovern out of the draft.

Ah that's right. No dramas. Can imagine the club would want to get him out there ASAP and will no doubt have a walk-through over the weekend or early next week.

Pros and Cons of that are dependent on who you ask and it wouldn't matter - he has been nominated, likely because the club genuinely rates him. He seems to have some real AFL potential qualities and has top-tier pedigree so we obviously deem him worth a list spot.
That's what I was hoping to read. :)
Thanks

We delisted two ordinary, depth mids, and have replaced them with the midfielders the club rated number 1 in the 2016 and 2018 drafts.

The net result might not be "more" mids. But it's a trickle down effect that means the two "worst" midfielders getting a senior game in any given week get replaced by two potentially elite ones.

Cripps, Murphy, Curnow, Dow, Fisher, SPS, Kennedy, O'Brien, Cuningham, Thomas / Pickett, Polson, Lang, Kerridge, Graham
Cripps, Murphy, Curnow, Dow, Fisher, SPS, Setterfield, Walsh, Kennedy, O'Brien / Cuningham, Thomas, Pickett, Polson, Lang

If we draw the line at 10 mids in the starting 22, the changes have improved the senior midfield group, and consequently strengthened the group of players providing injury cover.

And this year isn't the end of the process. We'll likely add 2+ midfielders each year from here on out, and not many of the names on that second line are needing to be cut from the list any time soon.
Excellent post Ballsy. :)

And it is much easier to find two mids every year from here on out than get a McGovern out of the draft.
McGovern's unusual in that he was a mature age draftee on the back of his brother's success, and that most players his size wind up as midfielders these days.

Anyone know anything about Ben Cavarro and why is he been linked to us? Going by his highlights he could be good small forward.
Mature age player who can dabble in the midfield, because apparently that's all anyone can link to us late in the draft.

I don't want him.

You should pick Lukakuis or Rankine .Walsh will be at the Murphy, Gibbs level whilst Lukakis could be the next Riewoldt or Josh Kennedy. Rankine could be like Gary Ablett senior.Another option would be to trade pick 1 ,for pick 3 and pick 22.The draft calculator says thats about right https://www.draftguru.com.au/pick-value-calculator#3,22| .Then you are guaranteed a gun and another long term player.

Steer clear of Lukakis, never done anything after Boom Boom

Don’t get the wrong impression he’s a mature lad and populare for his footy prowess and level headiness he does not flash goes hard at the ball in or out and is competititive.
At 184 cm his brother almost 2 meters and dads tall too may grow , no weaklings in the family upright lads both brothers love their footy.
Just because they're not tattooed head to toe dies not make, Sam Walsh a mr. Nice guy on field.

Hi Dad isn't super tall just around the 6ft mark, his twin uncles are very short (I would say 5' 7" at the most) and his Grand Father would be something similar.

I am happy with Setterfield deal as it made complete sense to me as it is a mid. The tall of McGovern does not for me, just yet. It may in time, I am hoping so.
It makes sense when you look at the latter part of this season when Charlie & Harry were our 2 tall forwards & every time Harry went into the ruck, Charlie was getting triple teamed by the opposition.

Adding McGovern to the forward line should ensure we always have at least 2 talls to make the opposition accountable when Harry has a run in the ruck.

Maybe his team-mates didn't get to position quick enough. :)

Which of the Champs games are you talking about and we can look at it and assess it.

EDIT: As Arr0w says, Walsh lacks the punch in his kick. I'd love to see the ball move through the air quicker, but that doesn't look as though it's going to come about.

I first noticed it in footage from the TAC match against Eastern Ranges. Several of his kicks fell short of his team-mates.

As I mentioned in my previous post, I suspect it's Sam asking too much of his team mates rather than poor kicking skills.

I feel like his first instinct is to deny the opposition the ball. Which is admirable, but perhaps taken a little too far.

Eg kicking to a 1-on-1 he'll kick it 'so far to advantage' it only gives the opposition a 10% chance of marking it, but also only a 40% chance to his teammate. Perhaps with a little bit of reprogramming, he can kick slightly more 'to contest', bringing % to 20/60.

On top of that, his kicking lacks punch as you and Arr0w mentioned.

For the most part, I suspect being a little less ambitious with his ball placement (and better understanding from team mates) should make a big difference.

Walsh has not played a bad game this year, in fact the game he was a little quiet he still had 27 touches (I think). Brilliant leader, keeps his feet, finds it for fun and seems a ripping kid. Vic Metro had him ranked as the best player in the draft, Rankine the only other player in the conversation. Wait until this kid gets some size, could be anything.
Sounds like one of his games which I watched this season.

For much of the 1st quarter he had an opponent almost attached to his hip, but Walsh kept moving around, getting to as many contests as he could & by the early part of the 2nd quarter he started to have the ball on a string, or be involved in other ways with clever taps, shepherds & tackles. This to me is one of his greatest assets; the ability to work an opponent over until they have no more to give.

Not sure about not being damaging, but he won't win a game off his own boot/effort, such as a Smith, Rankine, Rozee, etc

He will just amass the footy.
Same can be said about Crippa.
I must admit i do think about having Charlie lining up in the goal square with Rankine roving. That would be an amazing sight.
