There will rightly be some discussion around the Stocker pick-up.

I understand not letting talent you rated slide, should you have the chance to nab it.
My only question here, did we reach for the talent for talents sake or for needs, also.

I feel there's a lot more to this pick than meets they eye.
1. Have we taken ourselves out of the running for Kelly next year?
2. Have we a 'serious' midfield FA target next year?
3. Do we not rate next years draft?

This was a very calculated gamble and one we know the outcome of already. Would like to see the bigger picture.

MODS: Why is the List Management thread locked?
In my opinion the answer to your three questions is yep.

I have never understood why. We have always been heading in the right direction. Big picture. Even then the club keeps exceeding my expectations
I agree with you. From the day the rebuild was announced its been clear what would happen. Painful often yes but never gloomy. We have had the green shoots to tide us over. And the second year blues. And the curse of injury and inexperience Worst of all we have watched our light on boys go up against men. Thrown in to soon by neccesity. But always heading towards the summit.

Totally agree.

Next year our line up will have

McGovern
Setterfield
Newman
Fasolo
Docherty
Kennedy
Walsh
Stocker
Kruezer
Williamson
Murphy
Garlett
Pickett
Macreadie
Fisher

all of whom had no or little contribution this year. Then there is the games we were able to get into the young players.

Then there is Russell and the improvement in standards

Do we only have 1 pick MAX left with BSOS onto the senior list (is there any chance we can place him on the rookie list?) for another chance if a couple of favs are still out there?

Bowman on our radar from M. Balmer Phantom

You don't reach for talent, you make sure you don't pass it up, regardless of your needs. (as per our ongoing debate, draft talent, trade needs)

  1. Really over the "get Kelly" posts, it is like he is the only decent player in the league and it is like he is already committed to us, really is time to move on from these discussions, of targeting just one player
  2. There are a number of talented FA's next year, as well as guys that are a year out from FA, which clubs are now willing to trade out to maximize their return
  3. Have mentioned it on a regular basis, IMHO, next year's top 12 talent is no where near the level of this year's draft. While the club would still rate the talent, within that year, it does have an evenness about it
I don't see this as a gamble at all, I see it as a fluid strategy decision, given how it unfolded. While I had him ranked later in the 1st round, if Stocker was sitting among next year's pool, he would comfortably be in current top 6 discussions.

Bonus, we are still in the 1st round next year

Pretty sure we could elect not to take BSOS with our last pick, and hope nobody takes him between then and the rookie draft (where we have the first selection).

Did a bit of a look at what it looks like in retrospect trading future pick 2 for current 19 + future 12-13 and you actually see how good a move this could end up being.

Blake Acres + Lachie Weller for Petracca = not great but 2 solid players vs. 1 could be star
Laverde + Charlie Curnow for Josh Schache = doesn't even need to be looked into!
Ryan Burton + Daniel Venables for Tarranto = Rising Star winner + 22nd man in Premiership side vs. future star
Tim English + Darcy Fogarty for Andrew Brayshaw = long-term massive win for the 2v1
Taylor Adams + Isaac Smith for Coniglio = as good as Coniglio is that's a win for the 2
Nat Fyfe + Seb Tape for Harley Bennell = another one that doesn't need to be looked at

I think you guys nailed the trade with the crows. I'm not a bias crow hater and I support our state teams in any match besides showdowns obviously.

-Carlton will not be as crap as everyone thinks next year and i see you suprising alot of people next year finishing 10-12, possibly higher.

-You have had a hard year with injuries and will have players like Docherty back next year. You have a stong list and dont get me started about Cripps!!!

-You're previous high draft picks will have another pre season in them.

-The pick 19 you got that you used is worth more than a higher pick next year.

The only thing that is uncertain in my mind is the crows performance next year. However i think you guys nailed this trade.

Good luck next year!

Crows have done well.

But, much of the BF world thinks the Blues have been murdered.

It will likely be 2019 pick 2-5 to Crows for Stocker and 2019 8-13.

Very much depends on how good a player Stocker turns out to be.

This is not possible to call for a good few years. It could be a win/win.

Certainly has the footy world talking.

One thing is that I that certain Crows fans are kidding themselves if they think 2018 was a one-off. There are some genuine cracks in their team.

P.S. you guys are the far more likeable SA team.

Our young midfield is set.
No more midfield draft picks.

Only mature recruits for the next 2/3 years.

Draft picks for needs like ruck and small fwd.

I believe we have two. Ben and someone else in national draft and rookie draft probably 2 or 3 picks. Something tells me Sam Fisher will be one of the rookie picks.

Sorry, was picks outside BSOS with our list numbers. BSOS as a rookie would give us another pick today, if we wanted a particular player.
Sam Fisher hopefully too.

I think it’s a win win for us and crows either way. We get our man and have a years jump on his development. In OUR development it was a master stroke. Our list is looking fantastic.

The Crows may be targeting a free agent and want a higher first rounder. It works for both teams regardless of what happens ladder wise next year

For us we get exactly what we need. Inside strong mid with pinpoint kicking on both sides.

I suspect some other club will bid on Ben at back end of draft, just to make sure we have to take him in National Draft. I suspect we not fussed whether we rookie list him or primary list him. Only Ben himself would care which list he put on.

Whether it's our pick 5 or Adelaide's pick 10, don't think it will take us out of any running for a big trade, the important thing is getting Kelly (or any other gun) to choose us.

I realise we're all hoping for a good 2019 but I think we need to be realistic. I'm still thinking bottom 4.

We finished last because of a few things but a big contributing factor was our younger players simply couldn't provide the pressure for long enough.

Any chance of us making significant improvement in ladder position is going to rely heavily on Andrew Russell performing a miracle or two.

So prepare yourselves for Kane Cornes etc making this a disaster.

What's the odds on us having a go for WCE pick 23? ;)

Reckon they want Hill there.

Could see us offering up the future thirds for 27 (GC), 29 (WC) or 30 (WB).

The Doggies' pick in particular given they'll be matching a bid for West by then anyway.

Tom McKenzie might be one we target thereabouts.

Will be interesting

I really don’t see bottom 4 for this group. If no injuries

- Back 6 back to their 2017 form ( but now stronger, fitter and more time together)

- much deeper midfield allowing more time resting on hff or pocket for newbies rather than what Dow had to do.

- majority of players driving elite standards like there hasn’t been for decades.

- another year on the game plan

- looking at schedule, I see 14 ish games we should be in with a realistic chance.

-for me our floor is 5 and ceiling 12

It's all about critical mass. The flow-on effect of bringing is so many good kids in a short time span is a plus in itself. They will grow and develop together and within a couple years will be a strong and importantly united unit.

Pretty low I would have thought. We got not much to trade with. Swap of Crows first rounder for Eagles first rounder does not really cut it.
Pick 64, 67 and 72 not really anything to trade with to move up the order to pick 23.

We wouldn’t trade our first round next year for WCE Pick 23 and maybe something else if it gets us the player we want?
