Quick question: why do the experts around here (and I'm clearly not one.. ) feel Stocker will be ready to go next year? Looks very sleight for an inside mid .. looks smaller in frame than Walsh in that photo.

Skill and mindset wise he may be ready but body-wise ?

He's definitely more built than Walsh, but he's not quite ready to go against inside mids in the AFL yet.

He is 183 and 85, he is already AFL size, but with all players, will develop more strength. Mindset wise, he is as tough as they come

So you reckon we go mature for our 3rd/4th pick? Who are the options? Gibbons? Pickett?

I agree, and timing can be everything!!! He got the arse because he was an outside player when we needed inside grunt, but now we are better in that area we have started to get guys like O`Brien who play more as outside mids and Boekhorst would have been an asset because he was fast and could kick a footy. We all know he didn`t like the hard stuff but you still need players that use the ball well..........just look at Bradles and he played over 300 games of footy mostly on the outside. Rather have a pacey player on the outside than one that just plods away in the middle (Graham) and gets loads of kicks but does nothing with them!!! Boekhorst should still be on our list imo............

I don’t think it was Blaine’s talent that was the problem. It was the no d...heads policy in full effect. Only my opinion and probably not correct but a possibility nonetheless

Look at West Coast last year when they traded their first to Gold Coast for Gold Coasts end of first round and few other nuggets - win the flag from nowhere making that trade a 1 pick drop down the order, and then make out like bandits with early selections in the second round.

I like the message it sends about where the list and the club is at. The time is now, we have the foundations, now we need to build on them.

Stocker with 1 year development in return for slight pick downgrade. I like it. I am going all-in just like the club has with a 3 game membership!

I would actually like another pacey midfielder and/or wing type player who can run and kick goals myself.

I think The Eagles midfield depth proves this, managed to cover the loss of Gaff with aplomb in the finals.

Conversely, Richmond's lack of midfield depth and zip got found out in the prelim against a fast, rampant Pies outfield.

I don't want us to become too reliant on Cripps and Paddy Wow going fowards, like the Tigers are on Dusty and Cotchin. We need more to share the load and create problems for opposition coaches.

Yep and imagine if we have to give up the 2019 first rounder to trade in the mature player we really want, using pick 10-14 instead of pick 3-6 is a much better scenario for us next year in a weaker draft.

In addition to potentially putting an early pick on the line in order to get the deal done, the trade will also limit Carlton's ability to make a move for a host of out-of-contract players set to hit the market in 2019 – Greater Western Sydney star Josh Kelly being among them.

My interpretation is they think trading potentially pick 2-3 (if we finish low) would be a better bargaining chip compared to what we might receive fro the Crows finishing position.

Josh Kelly will either want to return to Victoria or accept more money regardless of what pick we may have....

You don't reach for talent, you make sure you don't pass it up, regardless of your needs. (as per our ongoing debate, draft talent, trade needs)

1. Really over the "get Kelly" posts, it is like he is the only decent player in the league and it is like he is already committed to us, really is time to move on from these discussions, of targeting just one player
2. There are a number of talented FA's next year, as well as guys that are a year out from FA, which clubs are now willing to trade out to maximize their return
3. Have mentioned it on a regular basis, IMHO, next year's top 12 talent is no where near the level of this year's draft. While the club would still rate the talent, within that year, it does have an evenness about it

I don't see this as a gamble at all, I see it as a fluid strategy decision, given how it unfolded. While I had him ranked later in the 1st round, if Stocker was sitting among next year's pool, he would comfortably be in current top 6 discussions.

Bonus, we are still in the 1st round next year

1. You may well be over "The Kelly discussion" but every chance the CFC have not been nor should be, but may yet realise that he's now out of our market.
2. Maybe we know something, but then again we knew something this year, yet Shiel didn't work out. That shouldn't stop us from doing the groundwork though.
3. I'm not au fait with the quality nor depth of next years draft, so will take your obseravtion on board.

We're all thrilled for the adrenalin rush for the taking of Stocker, but we really won't know/possibly know whether that worked out for the CFC until after next years draft/trade period.

It looks good right now and my points were just put forward for discussion.

It really does sound like a few clubs got scared off about Smith's medical certificate.
