List Mgmt. Carlton's 2019 Draft Thread

If I was a list manager, I would follow the Hawks concept of just stealing developed rucks from other clubs. I would very rarely bother having one of my list as an 18 year old.
Cool story, I like it.

Lycett - Premiership player, stolen at his prime
Vardy - Premiership player taken from Geelong.

Toby Nakervis - Stolen from Sydney

Roughead - Traded away
Boyd - Traded from GWS

McEvoy - traded from Saints
Hale - North

Do you kind of get the picture about rucks yet or do you want me to keep going until I find Gawn, Grundy, Goldy, Sandilands?
Just because Carlton have recruited dud rucks, does not mean the concept is wrong. It is working for many other clubs, I personally would do it with Carlton.

Other than Warnock, the rest were known spuds when we picked them up.
What you're glossing over here, is that the strategy is to de-emphasise paying silly premiums for certain kinds of rucks, and preferring to upgrade more critical positions on the ground.

The rucks that do have that higher value typically never get traded. I think how some clubs define the ruck position is fundamentally wrong, and that's why they'll never wind up with a Kreuzer or Grundy or Sean Darcy (I maintain that Melbourne got lucky with Gawn, as they seemed to pick him mostly for his height).

People talk about these game managing half-backs like they're the 'quarterback' of the team, but a good ruck sees the footy about 3 times as much, so one that can control stoppages and clearances like Darcy and Mumford in one form (equivalent to a pocket quarterback), or Kreuzer and Grundy in another (scrambling quarterback), are extremely valuable.

Mid season draft coming up, I would not mind Carlton considering a few WA options.

Jye Bolton - Mature midfielder that I think could play forward as well, would be nice player to protect our younger mids.
Nathan Freeman - Injury risk, but certainly provides speed and we certainly require this in our team.
Marlion Pickett - X Factor galore with this player, thought he could be a sneaky option to be drafted for the last two years.
Cory Gregson - Forward impact player
Tyron Smallwood - I like him as a small forward and could be worth a shot on a list.
Freeman must be damaged goods at this point... how are his hamstrings holding up in the VFL? Last year he couldn't hit anything near full stride.

Apparently we had our eye on a few at the Geelong VFL game.

Freeman is massively damaged goods, but if he manages to string a number of games together at VFL level and you're picking him up on a 11 week contract, he is tempting.

I think the only way to get immediate value out of the mid-season rookie draft is in the specialist positions. Whoever a club takes, they're either going to have to play them in the reserves for a month while they teach them the basic team structures employed by that specific club, or they're going to throw them in and either rely on them playing on instinct, or have the rest of the team structure around them.

I can see a lot of teams just opting for a player from their own reserves affiliate, as theoretically that player should already have had some exposure to the style of play required. Otherwise, I think you just go for flashy x-factor types that you can drop into a forward line and let loose, or ruckmen/key forwards who have a very narrow, defined role which their teammates can work around.

Really don't want to see us take a midfielder and try to convert them into a forward pocket on the fly. We're in need of a small forward because that's what we've been trying (unsuccessfully) to do. Gregson isn't an inspiring pick, but he's played the role and the level before. Pickett is versatile and plays a number of positions anyway, so he'd be another to consider. No thanks to the rest on that list.

Interesting to see how long in reality it would take for a player to learn a teams structure. You would hope someone like Bolton having played League footy for a long time would understand team structures and pick them up rather quickly?

Thought the same about the Sydney game. We had them on all stats going in.

Still think we will get the win against North though. First time we are going in as favorites this year

Must admit I have had the same thoughts from the Sydney game onwards. As difficult as it is when you are emotionally invested I just think the form lines are in out favour.

Goal-kicker who creates his own opportunities and is elite at pressuring? YES PLEASE!

Is currently working (full-time ?) as a carpenter. Should only get better if drafted into full-time AFL environment.

PS - been super happy with Cuningham this year when fit. But could still use another pure small forward.

Current mid-season draft order (number of picks denoted):

Melbourne (1)
North Melbourne (1)
Sydney (1)
Carlton (1, maybe 2)
Western Bulldogs (1)
Gold Coast (2)

for the draft watchers:

does this years crop look better than last years for depth? also are "Draft analysts" shit stirring or talking up anderson and rowell when saying they are better than walsh?

Given how dissatisfied I am with Plowman at the moment, is there even a sneaky chance that we look at Alex Johnson? even with his knee rehab.

Did his 6th knee in August.

I assume wouldn't be ready to play until late in the season.

Waste of a mid-season pick for 2019.

Was that as terrible as I think it was?

Rowell and Anderson better than Walsh as some have said?

I doubt it to be honest but they're meant to be close.

I still think last years top 5 players could go number 1 in most years. The top 3 are probably the best three names I've seen for a while.
Then you add King (which I did not see enough of) rated to highly. Then you look at what Conner has done early and that is insanely good.

Walsh is breaking a heap of rookie records at the moment, so it is hard to say someone will be better than him that is not in the AFL system.
