Maybe he can't do whatever he wants and whenever he wants to do it.

Putting up next years first is a gamble as it may effectively take us out of being serious players at the trade table next year.
This wouldn't be something SOS could simply pull out of the hat without approval. I'm not sure how I'd feel should we let it go.
I wouldn’t be trading our future first no matter what now, GWS are looking at having a huge deficit going into next years draft now and will need picks desperately, so we could make a huge play for Caldwell, in fact I’d be looking at trying to acquire another first or second for next year especially if we are still looking at getting Papley as well.

I just did a few quick calculations with GWS and a bid on Green at 5. I made a few assumptions, GWS finish 4th next year, North Melbourne finish 16th. I haven't allowed for any father son or academy bids being matched, so its only rough guide, but GWS' first pick in the 2020 draft stands somewhere around 63. How far can a club go into deficit if they had players they wanted to match bids on next year?

Technically they can go as far into deficit as the total of the premiers picks for next year.

They would be better off just sitting a draft out (top end) then trading for the sake of it.

This is what I believed to be correct, until I read the FoxFooty article. (Link: https://www.foxsports.com.au/afl/af...r/news-story/9d34c5ddb8cc52e6b8b52310da7979dd)

"Carlton: Can’t trade their future first-round selection as they don’t hold a 2020 fourth-round pick."

Truly a bizarre rule to have in place.

Very bizarre rule. IMO you should have to retain a certain number of points and not necessarily a 1st or 2nd/3rd/4th.

I’m sure Geelong would help us out with a future 4th if it meant say McAsey or Kemp, which looks likely.

The prospect of Carlton spoiling Fremantle's draft night party by bidding for Next Generation Academy star Liam Henry ahead of the Dockers' second pick led to a deal in which Melbourne and Fremantle have traded top-10 selections.

The AFL confirmed on Thursday afternoon that the Dees and Dockers had orchestrated a trade whereby Melbourne gave up their second pick (No. 8) in this year's draft for Fremantle's second pick (No. 10), pick 28 and a future fourth-round selection tied to Carlton.

that looks like a win/win/win and closes a lot of options for us.
I know a lot of the time we talk about how well or poorly clubs do in trades but so much of it is being in the right place at the right time.

I see it as mostly good for us. Here’s why:

Assumptions:
———————-
- Rowell Anderson Jackson Green Flanders Young all gone.
- Green matched bid by gws (not Melbs)
- we are pushed down to 10.
- Stephens and Ash the last of the players I want in the top group

McAsey and Robertson the key.

Scen 1: club (Adelaide?) takes McAsey. Freo don’t take Robertson with either of their picks. Impact: at 10 it could be all the ‘top group’ (as I see it) inc Stephens and Ash gone. This is the worst case and only scenario I really don’t like. Follow below.

Scen 2: club takes McAsey, freo take Robertson with one of their picks. Presume Ash or Stephens with the other. Impact: at 10 Ash or Stephens has to be there for us.

Scen 1 is unlikely to create a great trade down as the player those seem to want to trade up with us for (McAsey) is gone.

Scen 3: McAsey is not taken before our pick. I expect multiple clubs to come after our pick in a semi bidding war. Should create a great outcome.

Yeh I guess it all comes down to how you rate the players. It’s probably Geelong or Port who are the options for McAsey and for me their picks are likely to fall outside the zone of the kids I rate highly so it becomes very risky. That’s just me though

Can someone please tell me that Knighmares mail is accurate

Wow. Just Wow.

Maybe some of our draft gurus could shed some light on this.

Any reason why he would slide this far?

I personally hadn't factored Young being on the board at our selection. Interesting

If Young was there at our pick we really should have a good hard look at it.
We may though be too far down the track for the player we've invested in.

Young is not vanilla and has several key attributes that would serve us well, even if he is just a silly HBF'er.
Maybe GWS does take Ash ahead of him based on needs......maybe. If so......good for whoever gets Young.

Can't see that given the possibility of live trading.

Twomey said on AFL.com.au that we'd be hoping for Stephens to get through, BigFooty posts are indicating we're heavily into Weightman, old rumours were suggesting that we'd take Kemp no matter what if he was still on the board.

LOL, the mind games :P

Mind games maybe, but it's still Kemp we want.

It's OK to leave things open 'just in case'. We did that last year even though it was Walsh we wanted months out from the draft as you never know what can come about via live trading. Had have GC offered up #3 and #6, we would have had to listen.

It's all so very dynamic right now and it's great for the competition as a whole. The abacus is getting a real work over. :)

Yeah, it was a good result from both parties.

Can't see that it effects us that much unless we were seriously having a pitch at Henry (which Freo would have matched anyway), and leaves us with one less club to trade with if we were looking at trading down.

Still wondering why SOS was on his way to Sydney today....wouldn't surprise me if there was a deal being discussed with Swans, but that is purely a guess.

I'm hoping he wasn't meeting with GWS though with their List Management Position now vacant.

Probably just doing home interviews with draft prospects.

Yep.

Or - wait for it - it could be completely unrelated to football. He does have a personal life away from the club. Shocking, I know.

I very much doubt he'd fly up to attend a meeting with the Swans or Giants. Technology is amazing these days...

Not being able to trade any future picks as it stands because we currently don't hold a future fourth round pick might be one of the stupid AFL rules out there.

Wouldn't really stop us trading. Any deal where we slide back or offer a Stocker type deal could include a 4th rounder
