You make some great points, although our spine/talls is a concern medium to long term, especially with the uncertainty of players like Macreadie. Marchbank will never be a KPP, 3rd tall only. I feel Ben will really come on over the next 18 months, but there are no certainties

Drafting replacements now is a way of addressing that situation, over the medium term, unless you trade to fill those holes

If we split pick 9, I would be comfortable taking SDK as a late 1st rounder, as I see him as being the best KPP from this draft long term
The thing about KPP’s is it only takes one bit of bad luck (McCartin) or some team to make a stupid offer (Boyd) and you can go from having a perceived strength to a need in a split second.

Seems to be more common with key forwards than key defenders, though.

And it's not something you can have a permanent backup for (ie. a gun key defender waiting around in the VFL in case Weitering gets poached).

Has Stephens at our pick 😍

Would also say we as a club really haven't lost anyone we desperately wanted to keep especially considering our on field performances.

Betts was wanted by the fans but not by the club apparently is the only one that springs to mind.

Has Stephens at our pick 😍

Also has us taking Honey. And we have a shot at Garcia late.

Get two of them and I'm thrilled. Three of them and I'm doing back flips outside Princes Park on Friday morning.

Has us chasing after needs late when the quality starts to run out, I hate that.

Why?

If the quality runs out, wouldn't the best approach be to target needs for a bit of a Hail Mary? If we're tossing up between a bunch of unlikely prospects, better to roll the dice in a position we're shallow in and hope we strike gold.

Yep which is why it’s difficult. It’s only four years until all of Curnow, McKay and Weitering are FA’s, which if they become the players we hope they will be will put a huge strain on our list/salary cap. (Considering Cripps will be already on huge dollars) Four years seems like a long time but that’s how long Curnow, McKay and Weitering have had and Weitering is the only one who has had a substantial impact at AFL level And most of us pigeon hole these guys as future stars. It’s a hard juggling act probably made harder for us with so much talent in such a small age group with very few who have actually proven themselves.

Of course. I trust we've advanced from targeting HBF'ers that we're going to turn into something else. We were ever so clever.
Our list is in a position where we have to be specific in terms of what we bring, allowing development and opportunity to come about.

We can keep juggling around HBF'ers for ever and a day, but we're not going to advance the whole by doing so.
The later picked 18 year old mids also don't fare too well if you look at recent draft history.
There will be a couple that had 'slipped' and made good in teams that develop players well (Worpel & Graham) but as a whole, it's pretty slim pickings as you head south on the table.

This may be a resounding no but given our deficiency in the small forward position would it be worth getting the band back together and putting Jeff Garlett on our rookie list? With Betts is back he may thrive again with a decent mentor

Nah - the bloke is 30. One old small forward is enough, the plan now is, and damn well needs to be, to find a quality young kid who Eddie can take under his wing and help develop. Eddie for the now, a kid for the future, one passes the torch to the other.

Over 800 players have nominated for the draft including 43 delisted players ...

Can someone please outline the above.

The list includes 43 delisted players looking to regain a position in the AFL, including Jeff Garlett (Melbourne), Lachie Henderson (Geelong), Daniel Menzel (Sydney), Lynden Dunn (Collingwood), Ben Crocker (Collingwood), Matt Lobbe (Carlton), Josh Deluca (Carlton), Connor Menadue (Richmond), Jordan Cunico (Geelong), Ryan Bastinac (Brisbane), Tom Jok (Essendon), Teia Miles (Hawthorn), Darren Minchington (Hawthorn), Callum Moore (Richmond), Sam Murray (Collingwood), Kurt Mutimer (West Coast Eagles) and Lewis Pierce (St Kilda).

Full list of 843 nominations:-

I’d like us to consider taking Murray ... if I recall correctly he’s got pace which is what we need and afl experience ...

Not sure he cracks our backline with Simpson, Plowman, Newman, Docherty, SPS, Willo, as well as flex options in Newnes, Martin, O'Brien, Stocker and Cottrell.

Not against taking him, but I think I'd prefer we look elsewhere. If we need to fill that running defender position, I think we have enough options that result in a young bloke being given opportunity (either in that position, or because one opens up elsewhere when we move the magnets) that Murray is superfluous. Chuck him a NB gig if nobody else bites though, and give him the same opportunity afforded to guys like O'Shea - impress at VFL level and an opportunity may come up in the mid-season draft or at the end of next season.

Clubs are clambering to bring in the next Weitering/Lever/Naughton (who’s transformation into a forward makes taking an athletic tall intercepting defender early even more appealing), hence taking McAnsey in the top 10.

I can see the logic, but I don’t think he’s at the same level as those guys. At the time off draft anyway.

It sounds like we are pretty set on Serong, but it sounds like we’ve got options for our pick and I wonder if we’re still scoping out exactly what we need. Surely it means we take Flanders if he slips through, but it’s a tough call passing on Stephens, Kemp and possibly Young.

Serong is a quintessential SOS pick though, and I can’t see him being swayed into selecting someone else if available.

Yep, who can forget back in 2009 when we were screaming for KPP's, he selected Kane Lucas ahead of Daniel Talia.

Just wrong on a number of levels [emoji107]

He did get us Crippa though, although the 2014 draft/trade - his last - was a complete disaster.
Not sure we can put all of the blame onto SR for that one.

how we do that
For example a deal like we did with the Crows last year.
Downgrade our future first in return for a pick in the teens this year.
Candidates could be Geelong who also have WCEs first.
Maybe the Bulldogs depending who they want at 13
Port who would probably rather do it for 18
GC hold 15 and we'd be talking our future first for their future 2nd
Hawks at 11?
Obviously you've got to make it worth their while, but you do it knowing who we're getting at their pick.
