Whitfield and Taranto are both great players and both will be very highly sought after, I would love them Both at the blues, I feel Brodie is the same as a few we already have so I’m not sold on him.
I’m trying to focus my attention on players who won’t cost too much $$$$ and will not a high end pick/s

I’m not picking on you or your post, but why do so many use the line (insert club) would be stupid to let them go?
If Bonner or any player is ooc and wants to leave for whatever reason, their club has no say.

Nothing wrong with thrifty investments if they compliment your portfolio.
I associate the idea of trading 1st round picks or multiple picks with players getting huge money, with more and more free agents getting $1M thrown at them, I’m not sure I want to shop there.
The Giants at the end of this year are going to be faced with a difficult decision, pay Cogs, Kelly, Cameron, Whitfield and Greene a Mill or close to it and lose a heap of B graders or build a solid team of good player.
If we brought in any player on $1M then Cripps and Curnow would be expecting parity on their deals.
How many million dollar player s can a club carry?

No offence mate but you seem obsessed with every one except the players we actually have.
Caldwell was my 2nd best mid in the draft.
Some solid performers thus far into the JLT; Walsh, Clark, Butters, Caldwell (& Hately) welcome displays.

I actually really enjoy monitoring the development of young players in the AFL. Probably even more so than watching Carlton play.
My fascination with AFL is with the Journey, not the final result if that makes any sense.

Thinking that while this is a great "Draft Class", some of the youngsters are going to be elevated to star status a little quickly. The new 6-6-6 rules are
going to allow the classy ball players more latitude than in recent years to strut their stuff early. The "rolling mauls" are no place for kids, but now plenty
of space to be had for the one touch ball players who may be a little underdone physically.
A change for the better in my opinion, but let's keep things in perspective.

find in the draft. To trade for quality is very costly. We have accumulated some elite talent identification staff, let's use them rather than the cheque book and
picks to fill our "gaps". The need for "mature bodies" is not as great as previously. Our current kids will mature very quickly.

I think one of the itk posters said Smith wasn't up there, seeing we were pretty midfield centric that top 5 mayve had no talls. I firmly believe that we have been "lucky" in largely missing our trade targets over the last couple of years. Setterfield and Newman were inspired trades, however this supporter would not have been upset if we missed McGovern. I don't doubt he will be a good player for us, however, I have the greatest faith in Charlie and Harry to do the job. TDK will need to be eased in to the side over the next couple of years, so could have been the third tall, while allowing Harry to concentrate on his forward craft. I also have plenty of time for Kerr, who is undersold a bit by many. McGovern certainly more mature, with some X factor and the ability to "swing", I just see prospective small forwards and rebounding defenders who could have suited our needs.
Dodoro sure looked and acted shattered for someone having done a deal.
Maybe he was happy to walk away before being told, that was just not on.
I'm fine with McGovern as he does things that make a mess out of opposition backs.
Kerr is not that player and we'd just about require to set-up a forward line to suit his strengths for it to work. Bombing onto Kerrs head wouldn't work.
Given the fact that MS3 dropped us likely not using our first this year, shouldn't a name be attached?

Dodo may well have baulked at the price demanded for Shiel (he'd be a shocking bloke to be in a shout with) as i believe when crunch time arrived , "Dan the man" Richardson stepped in to close the deal.
A lone 2nd rounder for an * supporting Setterfield would have old dodo grinding his teeth right about now also ...
I think our trade with adelaide was a clear signal we have pushed the "go" button and aligns with the MS3 mail.
An obvious target would be Billings , OOC and apparently in no rush at all to re commit to the saints.
That said , Silvagni has proven to be anything but obvious but will no doubt be well advanced in his planning for the next trade period ...

The FA and DFA and other 'trades' are all exciting stuff for those so inclined..but the evidence is that only Hawthorn has been able to actually win flag(s) employing the 'destination' Club and top up strategy - this has now devolved (for them) into sustaining some sort of competitiveness - even to the degree of letting go one of their best if not best young players ( without his knowledge) in order to secure the 'services' of Wingard - it is an ever expanding doom loop because ultimately they have no youth pushing through.
Clarkson is reaching and so are Geelong for all their mighty trade know how - under Scott are epic failures in finals since they lost the core of what they had built and developed in house from the ground up.
All this in context of Carlton's 'draft thread' - only because the Club clearly signalled the draft for 2020 was probably not going to be the #1 point of focus when Stocker was brought in - this was clearly stated on draft night by myself and others not rocket science. The truth is though that Carlton will have to continue getting young players in via the draft and rookie decisions - because it is important to maintain a balanced list - which means continual renewal and regeneration. SOS and his recruiters ultimately score big points in finding quality in later round picks - and sans injury to Williamson/McCreadie - they seem to be doing ok so far.
Collingwood and Richmond have been the standout draft/trade success stories after Melbourne. Whilst Adelaide and WC continue to demonstrate their ability to grow and develop their own.
Truth is Clubs have to be able to make astute trades without jeopardising their culture or list balance AND be able to develop their own youth.
I was all for getting Shiel into Carlton - principally because I fear the damage to Cripps for lack of developed body support around him. However it became obvious that Shiel was not committed to Carlton ie he was not a 'buyer' of the journey the Club is on - so we move on - quickly. We ended up with Walsh/Setterfield and Stocker - pretty obvious to me we are in a far far better place given a fair shake with injury.
I read people clamouring for Coniglio or Kelly or someone else - anyone else with a 'name'...but a year or two from now I fully expect that Carlton will have developed its own abundance of 'names'....success will be having developing youth under them showing as much potential....
It is up to the players we have to force themselves into a position of replacing Simpson/Thomas/Murphy/Ed /Kreuzer and largely on a 2-3 year view SOS and Bolton have most of these covered already.
It doesn't 'look' like it so much right now - but the Club has been absolutely outstanding in getting toe h point it is right now as quickly as it has- sure there has been a 'cost' - but that has been paid - and membership growth is one example which underlines just how much in favour the typical person is of common sense and correct management.
We are in a far far better place than we have been previously in this century.

I thought it was Bonner given we were discussing defenders around that point in the thread, but if it's Bonar, I doubt they're going to let him go so early in his contract given their need for genuine inside mids.

Pretty amazing that the kings werent automatic locks for at least top 3. Hugely talented draft pool
