This, but also that clubs with those late 1st round picks seem to want to be moving up, rather than out in this years draft.

Which is true but no matter what, someone will ultimately be holding those picks around the #15 mark and one never knows what a particular team may want to do and when. We just can't be sure who'll be holding the picks we may yet want, should a 'player' be there. See Stocker.

All this live trading and academy picks has got me bamboozled. Haven't followed at all this year since I thought we would be trading our first round pick.

Someone wake me up when we are allowed to unwrap our new toys.

Maybe he can't do whatever he wants and whenever he wants to do it.

Putting up next years first is a gamble as it may effectively take us out of being serious players at the trade table next year.
This wouldn't be something SOS could simply pull out of the hat without approval. I'm not sure how I'd feel should we let it go.

Can't let next years first go without another next years first coming back.

Simply must have trade currency next year.

I just did a few quick calculations with GWS and a bid on Green at 5. I made a few assumptions, GWS finish 4th next year, North Melbourne finish 16th. I haven't allowed for any father son or academy bids being matched, so its only rough guide, but GWS' first pick in the 2020 draft stands somewhere around 63. How far can a club go into deficit if they had players they wanted to match bids on next year?

SOS is on my flight to Sydney right now...sitting in seat 1A!!

What NSW options are there?

ffs, go and ask him!! Tell him there are a shitload of BF posters busting their chops about pick 9.

As a guess, with less than a week before the draft, I'd say he's meeting with Swans to discuss picks 25 and 32 amongst other things....hopefully not employment related.

Future picks for the Swans would be more valuable than 25 and 32 this year....basically so they can accumulate points for their two gun academy players next year. Second round picks would be more valuable to us this year given 2020 is likely to be a highly compromised draft.

Having said that, I have nfi :p

They’ll just trade a Caldwell or Hill type and you’d assume one of Whitfield or Williams will be squeezed out.

The cycle just continues.

Not being able to trade any future picks as it stands because we currently don't hold a future fourth round pick might be one of the stupid AFL rules out there.

Correct me if im wrong but i thought the rule was you could trade future 2nd 3rd 4th etc but must have a future 1st OR to be able to trade a future 1st you have to have a pick in each other round intact

This is what I believed to be correct, until I read the FoxFooty article. (Link: https://www.foxsports.com.au/afl/af...r/news-story/9d34c5ddb8cc52e6b8b52310da7979dd)

"Carlton: Can’t trade their future first-round selection as they don’t hold a 2020 fourth-round pick."

Truly a bizarre rule to have in place.

The strangest part about it is that we could still trade all our picks next year if we wanted to, provided we wait til then. See St Kilda this year - they're going into this draft with Picks 51, 76 and 82.

I think as long as they adhere to the "must use 3 picks in any draft" and "must use 2 first rounders in any rolling 4 year period" rules, clubs should be free to trade whatever picks they like.

Its restrictive no doubt. I wouldnt say it was too hard to get around though, being a future 4th we could just swap out future 3rd with say Geelong (or another team that thinks they will finish higher than us) for their future 3rd and 4th. If we want to move our future 1st around then we will be able to.
