Plenty of good kids this draft.
Robertson, Serong, Dow, DeKoning, Weightman, McAsey, Kemp, both Stephens, the list goes on.
One or two or these young blokes and any team will have done well I think.
All up to the development team and coaches from there and I'm glad we have heavily invested in these areas.

With the draft almost upon us & various media outlets fashioning Phantom Drafts for the Top 20, it is becoming more & more apparent that the Dees are looking at drafting Pickett with their Pick 10, while Serong (will his nickname be 'what') is firming to be our selection at 9 (or whatever number it is after potential bids for Green & Henry).

Are the Demons reaching for Pickett at 10 or is his selection going to become the cause of much hand-wringing among some of the Carlton faithful should Pickett hit the ground running next season, ala Sydney Stack, & Serong (or perhaps Stephens) is running around in the VFL for the Northern Blues? Is this the time for SOS to take a punt that the increased hype about Pickett is warranted & not just the product of would-be recruiters in the media trying to spot & talk up the 'next big thing'.

Not surprising Pickett is gaining more interest, showed last year as an under age prospect that he could impact a game and that was evident in the schoolboy GF of 2018. Unfortunately video is no longer available

The Demons are looking at Pickett because they need his type.
I don't think it's because they're running down a list of their power ratings and selecting the tenth/elevnth best player available.

SOS wants (maybe wanted) Kemp at our pick but may have been asked to looks at things differently, if he takes Serong.
I just can't see us calling out Pickett and not because we couldn't do with his type but it may be a risk too high for us.
Serong is the safer bet but if Melbourne do take Pickett and he does well from the get go - Good on them.

His rankings are a bit out of kilter with general consensus. But that's ok, I like people having their own opinions.

Many of his player comparisons seem a bit off, though....

One thing we can never play out is how would have this player developed here as opposed to there.
Environment, the coaches, support networks, general well-being, fitness management and especially opportunity & playing in their favoured position, play a big hand as to what sort of player we ultimately see.

It's not measurable as we don't have 17 parallel universes to watch a player develop at every team in the league, but if we did, we'd likely see varying results.

I didn't think of that did I?

You'd likely be right because Walsh, like Cripps before him, doesn't require external stimulation.
He's already mapped his path out, knows where he's going and how he's going to get there.

Funny watching Walsh on Friday, that nothing shows up as vanilla about him at all.
Easily the most accomplished individual I've seen in his first and now second year at the Blues....Cripps included.

There are a lot more than 18 scenarios. As need to model every combination of every player in the draft pool going to different going to the 18 clubs. Trillions of combinations. Sam Walsh still wins the RS every time

I am interested in all of the scenarios where Sydney Stack doesn't end up at Richmond.

Love watching Stack play, but Richmond fans' superiority complex has been insufferable.

Not his kicking. Not his hand-balling. Not his marking. Not his agility. Not his run and spread. Not his contested work (although he did get beaten by Stocker) Not his football IQ. Nothing shows up as being ordinary.

Well this might be harsh criticism - but too often Walshy butchered his field kicks last year and cost him an AA nomination - pretty sure.

Strangely enough- someone last night said to me “why aren’t we talking about McAsey at all?”

Frankly he probably fits the needs AND best available criteria. Needs? What we are banking on Ben Silvagni to replace Jones?? Like McAsey is a TRUE key position. We have one under 29 next year.

Best available? I’d rather McAsey than Serong or Kemp. There’s hardly a question mark on him other than ‘may not be a champion’. Pretty hard to see him not locking down ChB somewhere for ten years.

I think the mindset here is, and should be, that the key defensive stocks get built around Weitering for the next decade.

Modern footy, you really only need two genuine tall key defenders, and you probably want a third bloke with a bit more athleticism who plays tall but has other strings to his bow.

Weitering, at 22yo (happy birthday Weits!), is the big banana for ~10 years.
Jones, at 29yo (as at round one), certainly has a few more years in him, probably four years if I had to guess.
Casboult, at 30yo (as at round one), certainly has a couple of years in the tank.
Goddard, at 23yo, has time on his side but big question marks over his suitability to the modern game.

Behind that lot, you've then got Marchy who plays tall but is more an intercept defender, Plowman who can do a job on a third tall but seems more suited to smalls, Macreadie who is in no-mans land a bit, and BSOS who could be anything but is very raw.

I don't think there's any problem holding off on drafting a highly rated key defender, given we're well stocked for the short-medium term, and have a couple of kids developing who may come on well. Worst case scenario, Goddards busts, Macreadie and BSOS never amount to anything, and we just need to trade in a handy second defender to support Weitering. By that stage we're contending in finals, we're a big Victorian club, and those players are asking to come to us.

Henderson for a late future first.
Hamling for Pick 35.
Dunn for a fourth round upgrade.
Austin for a fourth round upgrade.
Hombsch for a future fourth.
Roughead for Pick 75.
Frost for some pick swaps.

They're not glamorous names, but they're the types that can round out a solid backline.

You make some great points, although our spine/talls is a concern medium to long term, especially with the uncertainty of players like Macreadie. Marchbank will never be a KPP, 3rd tall only. I feel Ben will really come on over the next 18 months, but there are no certainties

Drafting replacements now is a way of addressing that situation, over the medium term, unless you trade to fill those holes

If we split pick 9, I would be comfortable taking SDK as a late 1st rounder, as I see him as being the best KPP from this draft long term
