Seeing sos manufacture the pick 9 trade and then also trading 22 to 20 to take Philp would be so interesting hearing the discussions
Doubt we'll see that, somehow.
Reckon there may have been a little heat around and maybe some divide in discussions

I'm hoping Andy Maher might drop in some tidbits about the draft when the next episode of The Carlton Show is released.
He may...but doubt he'd drop the big tidbit should it be true.

What is the rumoured big tidbit?
It's possible. But Twomey was the only one that reported it originally and now he has changed his tune. You're right, it doesn't matter but there was a fair old circle jerk in here when it was first touted.
So a whisper that Silvagni is on his way to the Saints, now they have a few ex Sydney players there as well. Now who was Papley communicating with at Carlton? Hope it wasn't Sos.
Where did you read this, ever?
More innuendo
I thought it was Gold Coast which came to us for pick 9. Not sure what you think SOS manufactured there. SOS was dealing with Adelaide beforehand trying to trade for their pick when Carlton sniffed the opportunity to pick up Young. When that fell through, Carlton confident in grabbing Kemp, accepted the draft swap offer from the Gold Coast. As for the pick 20 upgrade, we weren't going to use pick 55 so why let it go to waste.Seeing sos manufacture the pick 9 trade and then also trading 22 to 20 to take Philp would be so interesting hearing the discussions
I think he was being face tious....
Both Twomey and the AFL Gold Coast Draft night video both mention that Carlton approached Geelong first, then Port about doing a pick swap, before approaching Gold Coast.I thought it was Gold Coast which came to us for pick 9. Following his departure, I see the canonisation proceedings have commenced.
My reading of our draft night strategy is pretty clear. It's nothing overenlightening but i reckon if you covered all the pre and post draft news/rumours our strategy was:
1. Trade #9 and extra to ensure Hayden Young. Young Reid understandably couldn't rely on Geelong not nabbing one of Freo's picks to get McAsey, so tried to demand a ransom for the risk and we rightly decline.
2. When that didn't work out, hope Hayden Young, Caleb Serong or Dylan Stephens reach #9.
3. Once the above doesn't occur, trade #9 with Geel, Port or GC with the belief that we can get 2 of Kemp, Cooper Stephens and Philp.
4. We get Kemp. Stephens is gone, so we trade up 2 spots to ensure we don't miss Philp.
5. Cal Twomey confidently predicted Ramsey and Honey were likely fancies of ours on draft morning. So that worked out well too. We passed our last pick to rookie Honey. Smart move.
6. Phillips a nice rookie.
A tick for the clear plan and execution. Now we wait to evaluate the outcome and choices.
Looks like a pretty good read of matters to me.
One thing I'd like to know though, is whether our priorities shifted and whether some of SOS's influence may have been diluted
Was told months back that we rated Kemp in the top 5 and were confident of getting him but that may have changed, as the draft date got closer.
From what I’ve heard we had Kemp number 4 of the realistic targets Young, Stephens, Serong, Kemp in that order. Kemp trained with us at the start of the year and impressed everyone so much.Yeah, i reckon by draft night Kemp was either the 4th of the top(gettable) group behind Young, Serong, D.Stephens or 1st of the next(gettable) group with C.Stephens and Philp.
They must have had intel though that Kemp was a likely chance to get past the likes of Haw,Foots, Port and maybe Geelong. I reckon they would have been nervous that Geelong were the likely danger for Kemp but would have been satisfied with C.Stephens who they drilled down on late apparently. In the end Geelong preferred him and we got our preferred.

I wonder where we had D. Robertson as I’m still shocked he fell so far. I woulda been happy with him with any of our picks including pick 9 as felt his leadership, accumulation, combativeness and hunger was exactly what we needed in our midfield. Will be interesting to see how Philp progresses.
Yes. But they had received the Gold Coast offer first and were trying to shop around for a better offer before settling on the original offer from the Gold Coast. Both Twomey and the AFL Gold Coast Draft night video both mention that Carlton approached Geelong first, then Port about doing a pick swap, before approaching Gold Coast.
Regardless how his career pans out, the Kemp selection and the wheeling and dealing to split the picks prior is probably my favourite piece of list management by SOS.
Interesting, so if Kemp is a total bust, whether it be injury, or just doesn't come on, you will still think its SOSs best piece of list management?
If Kemp remains injury free and is a high level contributor, then SOS will go down as a god, if Kemp fails, SOS will have egg on his face, unless that is Philp is a superstar.
You really do seem to find it objectionable that a supporter holds this particular club figure in high esteem? Why is that?
