Hear me out, how about...

Draft the best available player to address list needs (particularly projected needs in 2-5 years)?
Madness......

You like to be definitive Arr0w and don't like to be challenged. "Best available in the draft" is always subjective and coloured dramatically by needs.
It is fair that one never overlooks known superior talent, but needs play a much bigger role than you care to admit.

As for the assertion that we didn't address needs, this is just incorrect. We are/were stymied by what was available within our range. Common sense
dictates that we retain one pick for when player strengths and our needs are more apparent. We will know closer to the season commencement how Charlie is tracking, as well as any injuries that may crop up. SSP or Mid season draft is yet to be determined.

Durdin & Carroll shape as good picks, as good as any in the range. Can't profess to know Parks, but from vision reckon 192cm about the mark, and hopefully ala Crippa can grow another couple of centimetres late. As I stated pre draft, there were no "modern" KPD's in our draft range. Will back the club until proven otherwise. I wanted the ruck, I wanted Henry Walsh, but can understand the reticence with the list changes. Parks does look to have the potential to be a Stewart, Haynes type, which would be a great result.

I generally don't do grey, so yes, I prefer definitive, but being challenged is a good thing, here and more so within any organization, as vigorous debates are health, rather than everyone being sheep to what they hear from so called professionals. Recruiters aren't surgeons, it's opinion based and at the strike rate is no where near perfection, in fact most struggle with a better that 50/50 ratio

I will try and make my thoughts clearer on my beliefs of best available.

Clubs don't rank players 1 before another, they generally do this in groups of 4-6 in each range, hence it's also possible to acquire best available while adding to needs, but you would never overreach for a specific type, hence what trading is for, as it's easier to ascertain worth and or acquire a type. Harker mentioned Beatson, but his words are difficult to believe given most years, those selections are made for him with bids on academy players. But lets take 2019 as an example, Beatson selected a number of different types at different stages of the draft

Firstly, they clearly believed they needed a KPD and 2 small forwards both of which they could have also attained in the draft, but they traded for what they believed to be better options, hence trade for needs

DFA Kaiden Brand
DFA Sam Gray
DFA Lewis Taylor

Then the draft. Stephens taken before Gould, hence best available. If Gould was gone by pick 26, then where would they have addressed that "Type/Need"? Would they have gone Sharp, Worrell, Jones, Comden, Rivers, etc, none of us here will know

5 Dylan Stephens
26 Will Gould
36 Elijah Taylor
39 Chad Warner

I don't dislike the players we selected, Carroll was clearly "best available" given he was a known slider. Did he also tick the "needs" box, probably, but he was a slider after all so we never looked like adding his "type", a kid that can play HB, HF, inside or outside. No issue with Durdin (I think small forwards were the least of our priorities), I think he is of solid character and a good footballer, but not what I would consider best in that type. Parks was also a solid selection, but being anywhere from 189-192 is not a need, perhaps he too was best available in the clubs eyes?

I too wanted a ruck/forward (Henry Smith at the Durdin selection) and a genuine KPD, but if the club believes these types were a reach, then I am happy we didn't overreach.

Nothing wrong with people debating situations, but passing off the same opinions/propaganda as facts, over and over again, is disappointing

We’ll probably pick up McDonald who is perfectly fine depth and solves any short term concern. I’d also be bullish about turning him into our long term Jones replacement. See ball-spoil ball and leave the fancy stuff to the other guys.

Agree with you , McDonald is a reasonable choice for the club, good auxiliary type player for defense, mature age, body and has played 81 AFL games for zero draft picks how can our recruiters ignore him.

As long as we don't sell the farm for him.

Quiet sheepy.

Can someone explain to me why clubs get these bids on academy players constantly, yet some academies such as ours and Melbourne’s never have anyone?
Are we just unlucky? It’s disconcerting and seems downright unfair that other clubs like Sydney & Gold Coast seem to consistently get this academy talent that helps them continually refresh.

More talent in other areas looks like what it comes down.

Blues allocated region for academy

The zones were dished out around 2015/16. We were broke and focussed on internals. We didnt lobby for part of the NT and thought north of melbourne would be ok. I had the sense resourcing the area wasnt a high priority. We had more pressing issues in those times

From what I've read, Carroll has improved in the areas I saw as a weakness.

Best clearance player in the WAFL colts and his contested work is spoken of highly. A lot can change in a year, Samo looked like a no.1 pick in his U17 game, as did O'Brien.

Hoping Carroll could turn into a Josh Dunkley type.
Ave 15 contested in the WAFL colts this year most of anyone.

Because he's no good?

I agree, that no club hits perfection, you need to constantly assess the changing nature of the list, with players improving and or declining, but some areas need to be prioritized

While you can manufacture other areas, even a smaller forward line if injuries hit, you just can't manufacture KPD height

Jones and Levi are 30+, leaving only Weitering when I believe we are a serious contender

You can certainly address this in the trade period, but you the use up valuable, limited commodities, that you may need for other areas moving forward.

Most most consistent, top end, successful sides, prioritize talls
Except Collingwood who just keep drafting and trading for mids and medium forwards till the cows come home, with the “surely Cox puts it together this year” mindset. Idiots he’s American

You've obviously never seen him play....

I'd take Marsh over McDonald in a heartbeat if it was a choice of the two.
