My early smokie for this draft is a kid from Oakleigh called Connor Stone. Looked a classy prospect last year. Had something about him.

Probably around the 2nd/3rd round mark.

Can't add much to the discussion this year, so i'll just bump my post from P1 of this thread. I really liked Stone's speed and class in his underage year and we now have the picks around his seeming range. I think he could be a big bargain at this range. He looks AFL class to me and is Captain of his school i think, so leadership and drive shouldn't be a problem. Added bonus is he has the feel of a Teague player. Quick, gets up and back and can set plays up and finish plays.

That's my input for this year lol......other than i like Archie Perkins and Nik Cox from the little i've seen and heard/read. And McDonald from Perth could be the Next Big Thing. Perfect size for mine. Great bodywork, nous, endurance and kick for goal. North could have the real Pick1 this year as Adelaide might somewhat understandably go Thilthorpe, who i haven't seen.

Kennedy has shown more than Dow at this point, so if there was someone to trade it would've been him. Stocker also a bit wishy washy. I get that he was away for the whole year, but I've heard rumours of attitude problems and work rate around the club. I'd leave Stocker alone, but if there was someone who was a surplus to our list requirements, it's Dow.
Trade Dow... That’s crazy talk!!!

Never said to trade him. I just said that if we're going off where we have a surplus of high pick draftees with potential talent, and someone who hasnt been able to crack into the side properly, it would be Dow.

Hasn’t been able to crack into the side properly?

He played 20 games in his debut season and 19 in his second.

Played just the three this year, but he wasn’t fit.

Think you are being very harsh.

Played 20 games in his debut season becuase Bolts fed him games and O'Brien too. They were give the easy life mentality and were never meant to properly work for their spots. That's why I like what Teague does.

Fair enough your opinion .. Great thing is by the end of next season all of us supporters, particularly on this forum will have a much clearer indication on where this kid’s career is at..

100%, and same with all our draftees. We've invested so much in the past into first round picks that I hope we soon get to see a lot of Dow, O'Brien, Stocker, Kemp and Philp.

OK, and what of his second season where he was a regular under both Bolton and Teague?

And what about this season when he started the season at senior level but was forced out by injury?

Again, think you are being harsh on Dow and I reckon he's a lot close to our best side than you seem to be suggesting.

Look, once again, I never said that I dont rate him or that I want to trade him. I just said that I prefer if our youngsters were not gifted games thats all.

Everything wrong in these two words. A totally ridiculous thing to say. Most young players have to be given a game or twenty before they are ready in a rebuild.

I dont see why. Teague has a good mentality of letting players develop their craft in the VFL before being a part of the seniors. If you have someone better that could be playing at AFL level, why would you opt with a draftee instead? I don't understand your logic. If for example Ed Curnow was doing well in the seniors, why gift someone like Stocker or Philp games instead when Ed could do a better job?

He has more available depth than Bolton ever had. You have to give them games to get a context for their learning. Lots of kids played in the Bolton days because, we basically only had kids to fill holes.

I get what you are saying about the Teague approach but, he went to far and had minimal rotations which hurt in a completely different way in this unique season.

Nice to have a genuine 2s to make a more realistic assessment on capacity.

I would like the club to put Dow, O`Brien, Stocker & Walsh together to do a block of training for a few weeks early in the new year, to work off each other competitively and to help each other try to improve their deficiencies while working as a group. Walsh being very professional would also set the bar higher for the others and perhaps improve the work rate of the other 3, and their age group should make certain that each one wants to come out on top at the end of the day........just an idea that`s all.

Important preseason coming up for a few of these boys.. Walsh Dow and Stocker will no doubt be going head to head and competing with one another over the preseason... These three can compete in midfield matchups, clearances, stoppages in general training drills and the match sims, O’Brien will continue to be developed as a winger most likely will be matched up on more the outside running types which is more his game style I’d imagine...

Sam Walsh will develop a great inside game as he matures and gains experience will be amongst the best in the game, I’m hoping his influence will inspire and mentor Dow, Stocker, and other youngster to reach higher standard too

West Perth & South Freo
Thanks Arrow, found them both.........big boys the two of them!!! Obviously Neale is a ruck-forward, but is Mallard a ruck or kpd (with what you were thinking of as far as our needs go.....) as he is a similar height to Macreadie & Jones, although at his age West Perth would probably play him wherever they needed him most. I could tell that Mallard has an indigenous background with his looks, but his father must be tall as you don`t find many aboriginal kids of that height running around too often........interesting to see what happens there, as he looks like he could grow into a big kid with that frame of his.

At times Mallard, seems sluggish, other times he stands out. You are right, indigenous kids at that height are rare, moreso being a leftie

I agree with what you're saying. Especially in a condensed fixture, he needed to make more changes to the team and be quicker to drop someone after several weeks of poor form. In that case, I am all for playing a Dow or Stocker if they are doing well in the 2s and giving them plenty of opportunity to shine.

But, I'm not for just gifting them games for no reason and no sign of hunger, purely because they went at a high draft pick that's the wrong culture you want to develop.

I agree in principle but you havent read my post properly mate. I specifically pointed to during a full rebuild which is a very different scenario to a draftee going to a strong club. Almost every player must get games for several reasons which others have mentioned and there is not much chance of anyone but a Sam Walsh actually earning all those games. As for a players hunger etc, how would any of us know that?

Sorry yes, I didn't read properly the full rebuild part. You're correct, a club like Adelaide, North, Essendon and Hawthorn, should theoretically be inclined to play the blokes in their 'next premiership side', as by the time they compete for one and are able to make finals, the veterans would've already moved on. That was the reason why we needed to gift Dow and O'Brien all those games back in 2018-19.

We're lucky because this year was the first year in a while where we started bringing it right up to the good teams like Port, West Coast, Geelong and Brisbane. Now that there is a very good chance we'll make finals (13 wins would be my pass mark in 2021), we need to be playing those who would do the best for our team.

Yes its good we are entering a better phase. But I feel obliged to say I dont like the word gifted at any time. It implies things that I don't believe is how a team works. Unless we are a coach in the thick of it at training there is no way to know the reasons for selecting anyone that doesnt already have a solid body of AFL work to talk for them.
Now to go to Dow specifically. He has done things in games that scream out pick me coach. Real class and footballing nouse I see. If he wasnt ijured this year I doubt this sort of talk would be happening.
