And I don't think we're in a position to get on our high horse when it comes to cheating anyway.

Rivalries are built through cubs being successful together and beating each other on big stages. Having the 3 most successful clubs think you're their biggest rival is a massive compliment.

Throughout history it is clearly Collingwood. Over the last 10-15 years it's been the Bombers.

Its always going to be Carlton, Collingwood, Hawthorn and Richmond for me. Richmond have been down but i know too many Richmond supporters for my liking.
 
I cannot stand essendon... and sometimes I question if I hate them more than collingwood... but not matter how much it affects carlton's chances (i.e. late 90s early 00s) I just couldn't sit there and go for collingwood when they played against each other... I have never been able to "want" collingwood to win... so in my heart they are clearly Carlton's biggest rivals...

I couldn't really give a stuff about '93, if you guys had inside info good luck to you, if we were good enough it wouldn't have mattered.
The king-hit on Mil Hanna had a bigger effect than anything, a dog act but when you're not much good at anything else you have to contribute somehow.

I admit a full comeback was unlikely but I reckon we still had a sniff of hope at that stage.
Anyway I look forward to a Carl v Coll or Carl v Ess GF in the not too distant future, Old Melbourne Town will be a-rockin' if it eventuates.
 
Very hard to say...we have to remember that Essendon have been hopeless since 2001, so lets imagine Essendon flying and Collingwood flying...

Was I happier after the 2001 grand final with Essendon losing or the 2002 or 2003 grand finals with Collingwood losing?? I don't know what else to say but equally happy!

but I felt much worse last year when Collingwood won than Essendon in 2000.

and I wanted COllingwood to win ANZAC day this year coz I wouldn't have been able to cope with all the Essendon carry on...

based on the above, maybe i have confused hate and rivalry.

Hate Collingwood more, but I think Essendon is our biggest rival..

Having said that I voted Collingwood in the poll.

27 draws in a row, with the cup being cut in half at the beginning of the 2012 season and the Football Almanac recording "2011 Premiers - /#DIV!0gXx", both clubs staying at 16 and 15 flags respectively, and - due to the psychological and emotional toll - both finishing at or near the bottom of the ladder for the entire decade.

Essendon by a long way.
 
It really does feel good being voted the biggest rival by Coll, Ess and Rich, I think it shows the pain and angst we've caused these clubs in the past, they can talk about the cheating, tanking and all this other bullshit they cry about, but the reality is we have pissed them off on the field more than anything

Completely agree.

@OP - You know, I voted Collingwood earlier in the day. Mainly because of our historical rival (thanks for all the GF wins) and the media kinda beats it up.

But the more I think about it, Essendon come out on top. I absolutely hate them. Everything about them. The players, the fans, the coach, the colours, the name. EVERYTHING.

Now don't get me wrong. It's the same for Collingwood. But **** me, even thinking about Essendon gives me the shits.

Richmond and Hawthorn shouldn't even rate a mention.

It's Collingwood but maybe I am just an old stager. Essendon mounting a challenge but I don't imagine the rivalry with Collingwood ever dissolving so for longevity it will always endure.

All stems from the early days of Melbourne civilisation when the sewer systems were not in place and the affluent Carlton effluent used to flow through the streets of Collingwood, and long may we hang shit on them.
 
I detest the Filth and everything they believe in.

Having said that, the Bummers are working hard to knock them off the top spot on my most hated list.

Ninthmond have been so bad for so long there are almost feelings of pity for them and who really cares about anyone else?

Sure it’s great to beat them, but how can you hate a club that you’ve beaten in the last 5 grand final meetings?

And considering we have been so shit for the last decade it is truly staggering. But it is these rivalries that fire the passion. I love it and have a complete and utter demonic hatred for essenscum and filth equally! Similarly for the feral yellow & black!!

Hate the lot of them actually. GO BLUES!!!!
 
The Essendon rivalry only began in the 90's.

The Collingwood rivalry has been around for over a century & the fact that the Pies haven't beaten us in a Grand Final for 101 years :D

For me it's Collingwood & I was fortunate enough to witness 3 Flags that we won against them in the 70's & early 80's.









I hate Essendon but not as much as Collingwood.

For me, the Filth just aren't quite at the level of the Scum. Over the last century, our Grand Final record against each other is 5-0. They don't hurt us. For as long as I've been following football, we've been clear of them when it comes to Flags (admittedly, I think people's age determines how they answer this, I was born in 81, watched the 87 GF).

However I feel personally insulted that those Satanists can have as many Premierships as us, especially when they cheated us out of 1993. The 1999 Preliminary Final is the greatest game of football that I've seen.

Filth will move up to the Scum's level though if they win this year. Hopefully we make it 6-0 in 2011. :thumbsu:
