Carlton's Forward line

Just a question about Carlton's forward line - who will play on Withnall and Lappin? Here's how the teams are on paper

F: Davies, McKernan, Fevola
B: Banfield, McIntosh, Hunter

HF: Hickmott, Whitnall, Lappin
HB: Collica, Jakovich, Pe.Matera

I am not sure whether Jako is the right match up for Withnall as he seems to be a leading type player. Lappin always seems to play well against us and the best match up for him is probably Collica as Lappin is good overhead.

I dont like Banfield in the back line but maybe with his confidence up after a couple of better games he might do the job. Hunter on Fevola looks ok.

On paper their fwd line doesnt look too bad especially with McKernan coming back to form in the last 2-3 weeks. Lets hope Milli and Jako can keep them in control.

Great to see Glassy back and he is a definite option for Fevola or Hickmott and maybe even Withnall. Best of luck to Lynch in his debut

I'd like to see Jako play on McKernan, he should be able to run off and cause some problems for the Carlton forwards. I guess that leaves McIntosh to play on Whitnall. He's easily strong enough, and has more than enough leg speed to bother the big boy.

The biggest concern for the Eagles is definitely Lappin, and I agree that Collica should have first crack. The other alternative is to put a positive player (Matera or Wirrpunda) on him and rely on Lappin being lazy to gain some easy exits from defence. It'd be risky against a player of Lappin's class.

Lappin has been out of form this season so im not sure he'll have that much of an impact. Collica should line up on him and Collica rarely gets beaten. Jako and Milli will obviously get Whitnall and McKernan, which way and who on who i dont know. Whitnall has also played a fair bit in the backline for Carlton this year so we may not even see him up forward.

I think they are spot on

Banners should towel up the young kid.

McIntosh will give McKernan a bath.

Fevola is the worst player on any AFL list at the moment (including G Harding) so I expect Hunter to destroy him.

Collica should account for an under-done Hickmont.

Jacko may struggle with Whitnall but don't be suprised to see big Red go back to defence when our midfield gets on top. Of course Jacko's new found mobility this year should help him on Whitnall who is also not the quickest player around.

Peter Matera on Lappin will be a doozy of a battle but I expect old Pete to come up on top.

All in all I think we have it in hand.

He (Fevola) always been crap, but usually has one or 2 games a year where he pulls 4 goals out of his arse. Im worried that with Hunter playing on him he might find the confidence to do it this week.

Looking thru the team selection this week suggests a fair bit of flexibility is available to us. Compared to Carlton we have more height, both onfield and on the bench.
Players who could take on Withnall include Jako, Milli, Glass, and even Lynch for a time - I'd give the kid a few minutes on him at least.
Carlton's only player above 190cm is McKernon at 197cm, which suggest he will be playing in the ruck most of the day, against both Cox and Gaspar.
He is a good experienced ruckman/forward, but he has struggled for a couple of seasons now....to be honest I cannot understand why Carlton let Porter go.

Carlton's entire full back line looks suspect, and their CHB is also questionable.

As for Lappin, Collica seems the logical choice, with Matera as a backup.

i think that the danger player here is whitnall. glass would probably be a better physical match up than jako as whitnall doesn't usually try to outbody his opponents to get his marks. in saying that I think that whitnall is a very smart player and we will need to play an experienced defender on him.

personally i'm hoping that wayne panics and sends him down into their defence.

Fevola's crap?

I'd gladly have him on the Eagles list. And with Willow out injured, he'd be more than handy in the forward line.

I really don't think we should be getting cocky. We did in the lead up to the Saints match and look how that turned out.

Carlton are a very, very proud side. And in front of a home crowd, they'll be prepared to work their guts out for four quarters.

Ratten, Hickmott & Camporeale have had a few games under their belts and are quality players.

McKernan has shown some good signs in the last couple of weeks, Whitnall (who has a good record against Jak) is in top form and Lappin is like Milne - very slippery and able kick goals quickly.

Clearly their defence is weak, but with Willow, Siera and Gardy out injured, it's not like we can really exploit that.

If the Eagles don't turn up with their heads right, then it could very easily turn into a repeat of the StKilda game.

On paper, we match up very well on them. And if our midfield wins as much of the ball as they should, our defence really shouldn't have too much trouble holding Carlton. Having said that, we are playing in Melbourne. For some reason thats a good enough excuse for the eagles to go missing, so it wouldn't surprise me if half Carlton team plays their best game of the year and beat us.

My matchups:

*McIntosh on McKernan - McKernan is tall and fast, we'd need Milli's leg speed and body-on-body strength to keep McKernan quiet.
*Jakovich on Whitnall - Having bumped into Whitnall in the city before, i can tell you the bloke is big! And i don't mean Troy Wilson big, i mean Fat Bastard big. How this bloke can run is beyond me, so Jakovich would be the best option on him.
*Collica on Lappin - All reasons have already been discussed, so i won't repeat them.
*Glass on Fevola - Gives Glass a chance to towel someone up and really get his confidence up. Fevola is capable of the odd good performance, but Glass should be able to hold him.

Thats probably all the important matchups. Davies and Hickmott can be marked by Hunter, Lynch, Roo, Wirra, etc.

The weather will be poor by the look of it so hard ball gets and little blokes will be important. We'll need to play well in the midfield to win this game.
