Just heard that we are seeking the services of up to four more internationals, all from Ireland. Caro will be breaking the story in the Age tomorrow. Icke has been hard at work. Can't wait to read it.

Story in tomorrow's Age

Steven Icke is in Ireland where he is aiming to sign four 16 to 17 year old Irish Gaelic Footballers. Each will sign on to Carlton for $1600, on the agreement that if they consider a career in Australian Rules they will sign a future contract with Carlton. The four players are from various counties and have been identified by our Irish Talent Identifier as the best young talent in Gaelic football.

SEN Bluebear. ;) :p :D

I hope we are actually trying to get them to sign rather than just getting to sign a contract that says IF they consider a career they will sign.
I don't know the rules regarding irish rookies.

We'll probably be accused of cheating, poaching another club's player or paying them under the table if they all sign with Carlton. :D

I imagine there would ba an AFL rule stipulating the minimum age for an international rookie

Anyone know ?

Carlton has also convinced 2007 all-Ireland finalist Michael Shields, 20, to fly to Melbourne next month to spend a pre-season with the Blues with a view to placing him on the senior list.
On the list?

He must be a gun talent in that case.
"I wasn't aware they were doing it but there is nothing in our rules that precludes this," Demetriou said.
:thumbsu: your arse Spew.
Carlton is understood to have spoken to four teenagers aged between 16 and 17 from four counties — Galway, Cork, Laois and Armagh. All four have been outstanding junior players identified by the Blues' Irish recruiting consultant Gerard Sholly.
Gerard Sholly is the man responsible for finding these players.

Great news.

I'm erect.

Who are the sneaky leakers Graham? :D

Did anyone find anything out about Shields?

All I have been able to uncover is that he plays corner back for cork. I'd be very interested in finding out his height.

With the 6400 (4 * 1600) - i guess it cant get counted in the salary cap becuase they are not listed players? can anyone help with that???
If So, whats stopping clubs paying players brothers private school educations as part of the out of salary cap payment?? That could be upto 20k extra out of the official salary cap a year, two brothers around 35,000!!!
Same thing - paying the school fee's of a young man who MAY one day pull on the boots for your club.

The difference is that none of these guy, or their relatives are on our list.

If we tried to do it here it would be illegal. The AFL policy hasn't caught up with what is happenning as far as oversees players goes.

No AFL club can pay money directly to a family member of a listed player, or do anything by way of gifts etcs.

These guys or family members are not listed - very different.

It wouldn't surprise me if the AFL created an International Draft to control this. Mainly to appease the GAA which must be livid at all the poaching.

Serves them right. Pay your players and you'll keep them.

Yeah, or have a limit like with the NBL, A league etc where you can have so many "imports".

It just staggers me the AFL have been so slow in putting together a policy on it.
The Stynes/White deal didn't really lead to much, but since Kennelly came in all clubs have been looking at it, and its been very obvious even from the public point of view (therefore probably apparent to those in the know for many more years) that this is becoming a big issue............AFL will formulate a policy in 5 years time.........hopefully we can naturalise a few by then.;)

It is hardly fair to try and stop people from excersizing their basic freedoms through regulating.

If a young Irishman can come here to work in a bar surely he should be able to come here to play football.

We dont stop our cyclists moving to Europe to ride in European teams.
We did not stand in the way of Luc Longley going to USA.
Sporting opportunities are global and sportsmen have the right to pursue their dreams.

Transfer fees/ compensation may help ease tensions, but to start taking the rights away from ppl is a blight on free society.

The GAA needs to revisit its "amateur" status if it wants to keep its players.
It is extremely unfair to force an elite sportsperson to spend his career in an amateur sporting leauge
