so which in reality means we are not going to go after thompson
I'd say Caro would know a few of the manouverings, it's just whether they are official moves or just tentative moves to test the waters.

Collingwood would be looking beyond Malthouse and Malthouse cant be seriously considered to be there in 3 years. It doesnt hurt to forward plan your succession model.

What's wrong with the coach you have now?.
every coach has a use by date, MM's must be fast approaching and given the rumours of his health over the last few years, it would be prudent of the admin to start looking at who would be a likely successor when MM leaves or is forced out of the job. Its called succession planning and every well run organisation does it.

Malthouse is the reason we are 5th at the moment. With any other coach I personally don't think we'd be in the 8 at all.
Even if we won the flag this year you Malthouse bashers would still find an excuse to hate him.

Malthouse is just one factor in a series of factors why Collingwood are where they are at. Even he would say the same. The question should be, and it is one that Essendon have had to answer recently: When does the club make a judgement on an entrenched coaches tenure in terms of relevance in an ever changing game?

If the coach can keep adapting, then it is not a problem, if the coach can hold the players attention and deliver the appropriate message, then its not a problem. If the coach can identify his teams strengths and weaknesses and structure a game plan to achieve the best from his personnel, then its not a problem. If a coach can build and maintain a great support structure and have confidence to delegate, then its not a problem.

At some stage the Collingwood admin will have to address these key ingredients, if they havent already. They will also have to not completely block out other options available either, even if it only serves the purpose to benchmark their own coach's performance against other well performing coaches.

Why is that? Last time I checked people don't tend to go senile when they reach 55. You'd be crazy to get rid of Malthouse, one of the best coaches in the league.

I think she meant Carlton - it was just a slip of the tongue.

Easy to happen when it has to navigate those braces.

Actually I thought she meant to say Essendon, particularly when considering it is public knowledge that they contacted his manager.

Very doubtful she meant to say us, have seen her make this type of slip of the tongue more than once.

Malthouse was last week talking about his end.

Malthouse has been at our club since 2000, he has had draft picks galore and how many flags have we WON?

None you say, with a butt .... well not butts, no excuses.

Yep I can see how he is considered one of the greatest ever..... DER!

If we were looking at Thompson it would clearly be for the 2009 season, as I cannot see Thompson leaving before then. Heard on one news show that someone said he should consider a move now because Geelong wouldn't be near the Grand final anyway.

Or something along those lines, I'd expect Thompson to coach at least next season and then think about other options unless they really want him go from Geelong.

why cant he be there in 3 years times if the team is winning?

That Collingwood havent ruled out looking at Mark Thompson as coach, on the offsiders this morning

The Age is full of alot of left wing ideas - most of which are not true. Always was been. Just a bunch of people thoughts - thats all it is don't worry about what they say too much

Not sure how a club looking at a new coach is a left wing idea.

I'd be happy to have Malthouse as coach for at least the next three years. He's been gutsy enough to debut these kids, he deserves the chance to let it play out.

This is the first time I have done this on "Big Footy" but here goes...

This is the most ridiculous thread I have ever read....

Obviously your brain fell straight out of your head due to the closeness of the Carlton Game, or possibly you have been using illegal drugs in huge quantities, or possibly you are totally full of S**t.

Caro....LOL....LOL ROFL....

I have some razor blades for free...you can either use them or go support
say Freo or just put a placky bag on your head.

PS I am having a hell of time cleaning all the Scotch and Coke off my laptop which came out my nose when I first read your post....this is gold and should be added to the "Rumour Hall of Fame"

The way our board have been running it has been spot on. Continue extending his contract by 12 months at the begining of the year.

For example; he is currently contracted to the end of 08, if this year is deemed a success then extend it by another year next Jan/Feb until 09. That effectively gives him 2 seasons to get up to scratch and doesn't put us in the position Sheedy was at Essendon where he was filling holes with reject players just to make it through his 12 month contract.

May be an unpopular view but i think Mark Thompson is an over rated coach. I think he is just a perfect example of the difference between a coach an average and a good coach is The strength of the list at the time. Don't get me wrong danny frawley etc would not have been saved by brisbane in there strong years. But I mean 12 months ago Thompson was under pressure to keep his job after his side clearly under performed with pretty much the same list. The expectations for Geelong where there last year and so was the talent and he wasnt able to use it IMO the fact that he took 12 months to get the balance and the best out of the group is really not something that deserves so much praise his coaching is average his list is great.

Again the voice of reason...
