The Bullitt Mustang pulled $US 3.4m at auction
the original screen-used 1968 Ford Mustang GT from the film Bullitt has a new owner. That person paid handsomely for the privilege, too, because it sold for a whopping $3.4 million. And yes, that’s the most money ever paid for a Ford Mustang at auction. Not bad for a car that was originally purchased for just $3,500.

Other Muzzies

How does Aus stand:
Peter Brock’s HDT VH Commodore, which won back-to-back Bathurst 1000 races in 1982 and 1983, smashed auction records last weekend when it sold for $2.1 million, $500,000 above estimates.
The total cost, including a 7.5% buyer’s premium, is $2,257,500.

Good cars, rare cars, some race cars are a good investment if you've got a lazy $mil plus.

Didn't an early-80s Brock Bahturst winning Commodore go for $2+million?

$2.1 The total cost, including a 7.5% buyer’s premium, is $2,257,500.

Race cars can pull a premium, from 3 years back:
Ex Bob Jane - 1963 Australian GT Championship Winning
1963 JAGUAR E-TYPE LIGHTWEIGHT COMPETITION

Sold for US$ 7,370,000 (AU$ 10,719,758) inc. premium

Yeah that race replica is nice, current price is still low. I wouldn’t mind a VK Brock replica but not keen on the turbo.

Commodore with the Turbo Nissan motor? Not sure how many were built, but it'd be a model worth considering putting in the back shed for the future.

Not sure about the replicas/tributes long term, be great for blowing the cobwebs out.

Bullitt car?

Yeah, copped a beating around those streets.

Nah, the blue VK with the turbo V8.

A HT Monaro:

'a lovingly-restored piece of motor racing history still set a record at auction.
Bids for the 1969 Holden HT Monaro closed at $715,000.

It is believed to be the highest price for an Australian Holden classic that can still be registered for use on the roads.'

Begs the question what the ex Beechey HT is worth:

The Bob Jane HQ is reputed to have pulled $1.75mil plus

Article today saying the govt had stepped in to block the purchase of above Monaro due to the car being a " cultural heritage icon " ( or similar ) and wanting it to remain in Australia.

A bit out of my league

The HT pulled $715k:
One of the most collectible Holden race cars of all time was expected to fetch $1 million, but sold over the weekend for a still respectable $715,000 to an anonymous buyer.

An old Datto pulled a bit more in Japan, not the garden variety version 240z we had here in Aus :
A buyer in Japan has paid a record AUD$1.17 million for a rare 1970s Datsun.

Known as the Nissan Fairlady Z in Japan, and Datsun 240Z in other markets including Australia, the Z432R is the one that gets Japanese classic car enthusiasts hearts racing.
With only 30 to 50 estimated to have been produced, it makes it even rarer than the 420-run production of the Fairlady Z432.

At that same auction, the Z432R outsold a 2006 Porsche Carrera GT at over AUD$723,547, and a 1963 Ferrari 250GTE 2 + 2 Series 3 for AUD$593,300.

$100k for a XA GT .....
Ford Falcon XA GT expected to fetch $100,000 at auction
The tyres are flat, it won’t start and it’s riddled with rust but this rare coupe is expected to fetch top dollar because it’s part of Aussie muscle car folklore.

Old Ford Falcon XA GT sells for insane amount, by Dom Tripolone
A piece of Aussie motoring history sold for a crazy price last night, and it’s even more insane when you find out how much they’ll need to spend to fix it.

A rust-filled rare Aussie muscle car has flown the coop for a huge sum. The 1973 Ford Falcon XA GT sold at auction for $300,909, more than three times original estimates. And a far cry from its 1973 purchase price of $7000. The car is known in enthusiast circles as the “Chicken Coupe” because it’s owner parked it in a barn and surrounded it in chicken wire because he couldn’t afford to insure it.

The price is even more shocking when you take into account many of the vehicle’s main components were in a poor condition according to the Grays Online, which ran the auction. The car was in a sorry state when discovered, covered in dust, scattered with rust, filled with rat droppings and surrounded by old cans. And there is no guarantee that it’ll start either, with the vendor saying the Falcon’s engine hasn’t been started since 1988.

It is estimated that another $100,000 would be required to restore the Falcon back to its former glory. But the vehicle is extremely rare and played a big part in Australian motoring history. Ford only built 120 Falcon XA GT hardtops, and this example is a one-of-a-kind specification, featuring parts from the stillborn GTHO Phase IV.

It is one of only two painted in MacPherson’s Old Gold paint. MacPherson’s is the Australian chocolate company known for making Freedo Frogs and Cherry Ripes. The Falcon XA GT was part of the infamous supercar scare of the early 1970s, and was born out of the Bathurst rivalry between Holden, Ford and Chrysler.

Grays classic car specialist Rian Gaffy says the car is “as Australian as it gets”. “From its accidental birth after the supercar ban to its decades in a shed surrounded by chicken wire to its colour scheme that honours a local chocolate company, it’s a uniquely Aussie story surrounded by rumours and legend.”

Anyone with a few spare coins laying around?

Now that is collectable, first of the Commodores .... last time I knew of it was the 81 Bathurst & the prang that stopped the race, as I understood Clive Benson Brown owned it.
See the car on the back of a truck on the way returning to the pits. It was repaired & Clive raced in 1982.

Bit surprised to see suggestions Moff ever went near it, even Larry Perkins who ran with Peter Jansen in 80 & 81, not joining Brocky until 1982.
