Picking up a conversation from another thread, what are people's thoughts about Hird and his place at the club?

I know I'm in the minority (there's a shock) but I don't want him back at the club anytime soon. Of course he'll be welcome back at some point, but in the medium/long term. Not the short term. Like it or not this all happened under his watch. I'm yet to see him really take responsibility for it beyond that first presser, where we know he had to be really urged to say that. (There's been so much happen between then and now so if he HAS taken responsibility for it I'm happy to correct).

I used to see him as a great legend of our club. I don't anymore. He was a great player, no doubting that. But to me that's all he is now. He won two flags and a Brownlow. His reign is now likely to cost us a Brownlow, ruined a period where we were building to a flag, cost us Jake Carlisle and Paddy Ryder, cost us a year of these 12 players. To me the damage outweighs the good he did and that can't be ignored. I simply can't see him as a great of our club anymore. To me that suggests something more than a gun player, and he's lost that.

But, obv, just my thoughts. People will agree and people will disagree. But I was grabbing a convo from the other thread and bringing it in here. Before anyone accuses me of randomly bringing Hird up again. So what do y'all think?

They would have to prove that the stress etc has caused a permanent and significant psychological injury. "Significant" has a legal definition and is a high threshold - think major depression, features of PTSD etc. Also has to be permanent, so even if they are badly affected now, they need to prove that they are unlikely to recover.
I'm sure the bar could be lowered on appeal - it's essendon we're talking about.

*sigh* law suits are coming :(
If I was a player I would sue the piss out of the club, an AFL career is short lived and many of these guys have been cut down in their prime. 3 years of deliberations, 1 year ban - 4 years ruined out of possibly a 10-12 year career if they are lucky! Not to mention christ knows if they will ever mentally recover and enjoy football again. I am shattered for them, can't imagine being in their position!

Non that play Essendon
Put simply Hird should be sent into exile, the club needs to have a deep think, it needs to take everything back to basics, this isn't about liking the decision, but it is about accepting that the club has a mountain of work to do whilst facing massive headwinds.

Trust and respect are earned and earning it takes work, it is time to retire the show ponies and hire the workhorses.

also for any numbskull who tries to tell you Jobe only won the brownlow because of the supplements, look in 2010 he polled 16 votes and essendon finished 14th!

Don't want him back in the near future. Still can't believe Tanner made the comment about getting him back to the club as soon as possible.

Right now the club needs to move on and they simply can't if he's still around.

Legendary player but his tenure as coach was clearly an unmitigated disaster and has no doubt tarnished his overall standing in the game which is sad but not nearly as sad as what has happened to the players' careers.

My advice would be to not even bother to discuss it at any length with someone who's clearly not particularly bright.

If anything, given that just about the entire rest of the side completely fell apart with injury that year, the supplement program probably made Jobe's win even more meritorious. He was not only literally just about the only guy left standing by about round 14, but the team was so regularly beaten in the back end of the season that it severely reduced his chances to get votes.

To be fair, yesterday's somewhat surprising decision (from Tanner's point of view, at least) has changed the context of his comment re Hird, clearly. It's not like he actually said this yesterday, so I'm not sure I see the point of lobbing it into the conversation (you didn't) at what is still an emotional time for most concerned with EFC.

I thought it was a bizarre thing to say at the time too given we didn't have an outcome. Didn't mean to insinuate he said it yesterday (if I did).

wow, love Dyson's mum, what a great footy mum
What a great person she sounds like. I urge any Essendon supporter who is upset at the moment to listen to this interview, if the ABC podcast it that is. The presenter was shocked she wasn't angry at the club. But Dysons mum answered everything well and got me feeling emotional.
