Yeah unfortunately the gooses who think they'd fit the bill know which side of their bread is buttered don't they?

We need a journalistic White Knight. Someone who doesn't care who they piss off to get the truth out there. Could be a Walkley in it..
You'll be searching a long time for such a journo, Beery.

I wouldn't be confident you'd ever find one, either. Not in sports journalism, anyway.

Interesting article I read the other day re ESPN's coverage of head injuries in the NFL. ESPN pulled out of a joint venture to produce a 2 part doco on head injuries. It was inferred that NFL had put pressure on ESPN not to report a story. ESPN cancelled another football fictional show years ago again because of pressure from NFL in that they didn't like the way the show depicted the game.

The lack of comment from Fairfax journos on latest is deafening. Can you believe a "Chief Writer" would not even write about it?

That's what it all comes down to really. That's my biggest problem with what's "happened".

We've been utterly thrown under the bus.

Now would be a good time for Baker and Mackenzie to continue their writings on the story.

The AFL has come out and said "no investigation" with haste- some might even say, with such haste that one might be tempted to wonder about the possibilities of activities involving carpet and a broom.

It's a situation tailor made for anyone considering themselves a true investigative journalist, I would have thought. Especially ones reputed to be the "best in the business".

Hmmm.

I suspect the Fairfax press is onside with the AFL, but the Murdoch press often takes a contrary view.
The thing is though, if Baker and Mackenzie are relentlessly diligent investigative journalists, they should not have a 'side'.

It's a huge story and if there is a whiff of cover up (whether that be from the AFL, Essendon, ASADA, ACC, whoever else), then they should be all over it if they're completely true to their billing and reputations.

correct.

The issue as I see it though is this:

I do respect Nick and Dick. They are outstanding journalists, no doubt. But every single article they wrote was based on what? The AFL/ASADA interim report and the charge sheet. Once they came out, the articles stopped. Did anyone else notice that? (The HT Board sure haven't ;) )

So what does that say? They were being fed by the AFL and I'm not sure where else any information was coming from. If the AFL shut up shop, which obviously they will, will there be any more articles?

It's potentially a big story, but no articles, so you'd have to think no on present evidence...

What we need is Grant Thomas with credibility and talent

Well, it's either that there genuinely isn't much to the story...or that the AFL doesn't want there to be much to it.

I'm pretty sure the other clubs didn't spend this year going "what are these supplements they keep talking about?" "I never knew about those"...

As I said earlier in the year.. how many background checks do you think AFL clubs realistically conduct? How many background checks did Melbourne do before hiring Roo's for example??

There wont' be a story.. because it doesn't suit the AFL narrative.. and this is a one league town.. so if they get on the wrong side of the boss.. then suddenly they have no career..

But who is to say that the Murdoch press doesn't have quality investigative journalists. I look at it from the side, that the AFL is a labor leaning organisation, and therefore Murdoch Press who are a liberal leaning organisation, will take great delight in hammering the AFL. There is a definite political angle to the reporting.. And true investigative journalists don't have to worry about AFL accreditation.
