This is just a thought I want to throw out there.

As a keen golfer I think I understand the mechanics behind a golf swing and putting stroke. I also know that if you decide to tinker with your swing no matter what level you are at you will go backwards before you go forwards. I think the same can be said for goal kicking at AFL level.

If Levi is working with Sav I think this may well be the case. I reckon today his goal kicking routine looked slightly different to normal. He did not take the wide arc as much so potentially this is something he is working on with Sav. To try and change ingrained habits is always going to take a lot of time.

I personally think the good outweighs the bad with Levi and he needs some time to work on his new routine before we start to judge if it will be a success.

His kicking has gotten worse over the past 2-3 years. I didn't think it'd be possible. No way of putting it nicely but he is easily the worst set shot for goal in the AFL. I really hope Sav can help him but if nobody has been able to to this point, then I have my doubts.

Its reached a point where I think we need to bring in a Zulu Witch Doctor to work some Voodoo magic on Big Levi and his clunker kicking at goal :D

Actually I thought the wide arc was helping him. He may be getting confused trying to learn a different technique.

He has till the end of the season to either rectify the issues with his kicking or find a new position in the team that doesn't expose his kicking flaws.

Failure to achieve one of those and he's on the trade table to the highest bidder.
Maybe he could be tried at CHB. Go for the mark and then look around for a handball to a running player ala Gary Dempsey.

Good to see the arc gone from his routine as it wasn't natural for him, he just straightened at the end and if anything it off balanced him.

Firstly his kicking action must be what's natural to him which is to come in straight and kick straight through it. I don't particularly like his grip on the ball and his approach. I think changes to his runup may solve some issues. not of the fan of the big long slow approach or his low grip on the ball.

His field kicking is fine, this needs to be analysed so it can be replicated into his goal kicking. Generally his field kicking, he generally kicks off very few steps and they are quick accelerating steps, his ball grip is also different, his guiding hand looks more orthodox and on top of the ball. I'd like to analyse where he runs towards before he kicks to targets around the field.

I think a shorter quicker runup, higher grip on the ball with hand more on top of it might benefit him. Could even be worth trying to replicate Setanta O'hAilpin's kicking style/grip.

Can't see there being a quick fix if any but would be looking at replicating his field kicking.

Exactly !!

He could throw some of that big frame around and clear a path for the flankers & runners plus either spoil or clunk the big marks.

It's simple. He drops the ball too high and has zero guidance onto the boot. Won't improve until he does this. It's a wonder how a lot of blokes get through the draft when their kicking is so lacking.

I've been thinking about that... maybe he should go back about 10 steps, turn around, and just go bang... 2-3 steps and away. I think that he tries to over-think his kicking at goal and it ends up messing him up. Whereas if he doesnt think about things, his kick is usually very accurate!

He came to us in the rookie draft!

There's no doubt that he could find himself playing for Northern Blues for most of this season given his efforts. Windy Wellington is not a place to have an ordinary ball drop. I noticed a distinct difference in the way he held the ball in this match. Less like Fev's grip, an orthodox way to grip the ball. Problem today. No power in kicking the ball. Very tentative. This may have been the influence of the wind.

Don't despair as Stewie Loewe was a very ordinary kick who could beat all comers in contested marking. He became a reliable kick for goal by limiting his run up, holding the ball in an orthodox way and bending over to shorten the drop from hand to boot.

Now TL15. Like a golf club your foot has a sweet spot. It's not on the left and it's not on the right. I think you know what I mean. Levi needs to kick for a goal like a golfer hits the ball off the tee. Not left, not right, straight down the middle.

Pretty simple if you ask me. If he can't fix his kicking we can't keep playing him.
I am tempted to be harsh with him for he does not miss with his field passing by 30m, would consider giving him 10 easy shots on Tuesday night - only 30m out and dead in front. If he cannot get 5 of them he is out of the team unless he gets 7 on Thursday. The coach is frustrated! (Jones is not much better!)
The upside is that if he earns his spot this way he may also have a bit more self-belief

He kicked something like 41.12 (?....low number, anyway) at TAC level in 2009
Still good accuracy. Out of interest I wouldn't mind popping down to Blues training one day to see him working one on one with Sav's coaching.
