Casey report from Peter German...good signs for a few players including Jamar, Watts, McNamara, Jurrah and Strauss but disappointing blokes like Dunn, Cheney and Bell aren't ripping games apart at VFL level.

One sentence in particular will interest Supermerc ... "Mark Jamar – He played really well. He finished with 25 disposals, was mobile and other than a few ruck infringements, I was very pleased with his game."

25 disposals??!?! That's more than he had the whole of last year isn't it?

Unbelievable! 5 kicks and 20 handballs?

UPDATE - 13 kicks apparently. Tune up the t-shirt press because he's ready to go bananas.

Seniors
Rohan Bail – Rohan played in the backline. I was a little disappointed in his game, as his opponent kicked three goals, but he is still learning and developing. We're also trying to develop him in a few different roles – wing and half-back flank. He hasn't played much in defence, but he'll continue to learn. We'll expect a little bit more over the next few weeks.
Kicks 8, Handballs 4, Marks 2, Tackles 4, Assists 6

Daniel Bell – Daniel was steady. He worked hard around the clearances, but he got caught with the ball a few times, so he needs to continue to work on his awareness. He had 23 possessions and worked hard.
Kicks 11, Handballs 12, Marks 3, Tackles 8, Assists 9, Goals 2

Kyle Cheney – Kyle played a steady game in defence, finishing with 21 possessions. He played on a mix of players, including Corey Jones. He did a serviceable job, although he got beaten a couple of time in the air. But his work at ground level was very good.
Kicks 8, Handballs 13, Marks 5, Assists 3, Goals 1

Lynden Dunn – 'Dunny' was solid, without being brilliant. He had 24 possessions and worked hard around the clearances. He showed strength and I was reasonably happy with Lynden's game.
Kicks 15, Handballs 9, Marks 3, Tackles 4, Assists 4

Daniel Hughes – 'Hughesy' was up-and-down a bit. He's a power player and he took some strong marks, but missed a few shots at goal and finished with 2.4. That's the area of his game that's letting him down at the moment, because he's getting shots at goal. Danny has shown some really good signs, but we need to turnaround his kicking.
Kicks 8, Handballs 8, Marks 6, Tackles 1, Assists 1, Goals 2

Neville Jetta – Neville was down a bit. We pushed him up the ground this week to give him a run in the midfield, but he didn't have the impact we would've liked.
Kicks 6, Handballs 4, Marks 2, Tackles 1, Assists 4, Goals 1

Mark Jamar – He played really well. He finished with 25 disposals, was mobile and other than a few ruck infringements, I was very pleased with his game.
Kicks 13, Handballs 12, Marks 12, Tackles 1, Assists 5, Goals 1

Tom McNamara – Tom was shaded early by Corey Jones. After half-time, he gave us a bit more run out of the back half. He's slowly but surely building his match fitness and is developing his game each week as a defender. We're pleased with the way he's going at the moment. Hopefully in a few more weeks he'll be cherry ripe for senior AFL selection.
Kicks 8, Handballs 9, Marks 7, Assists 2

Michael Newton – Michael had an indifferent game. He had 15 possessions, took some good marks, but kicked 1.4. His kicking can be erratic, but his defensive pressure was outstanding. He's just got to learn to finish off his work on a consistent basis and then he will become a useful player at the next level.
Kicks 11, Handballs 4, Marks 6, Tackles 6, Assists 9, Goals 1

Shane Valenti – Shane was good around the stoppages. It was a typical Shane Valenti game, where he was in-and-under and provided the grunt work. That's where his strength lies. He finished with 23 possessions.
Kicks 14, Handballs 9, Marks 2, Tackles 8, Assists 9

Jack Watts – Although his preparation has been a little bit behind the rest of the group, he was very good. We pushed him up into the midfield and he showed poise, steadiness and composure in tight situations. He's still developing and the next phase for him is to take marks and kick some goals up forward. Other than that, he's coming along very well.
Kicks 15, Handballs 7, Marks 7, Tackles 2, Assists 5

Everything there in the Casey seniors looks exceptionally good there, very impressed with what they have Jack Watts doing up the ground they know it's not enough to just play him up forward and get him kicking goals and they've got him playing up the ground getting plenty of the ball and getting a feel for the game.

Whether you like or hate Michael Newton nobody can fault that he's working extremely hard on his defensive pressure and trying to shed that "laziness" tag that's been put on him. 6 tackles is excellent from Newton but definitely needs work on the kicking but that can be rectified with help, also very good too see he's taking some marks which was a problem at the top level where he would fumble on the lead and drop the mark.

Great too see Belly have an excellent game, I really hope he can get back into the team and back to that 07 form where he was so good for us. He's definitely got what it takes to cut it at the top level and I reckon he could be quite a decent addition to the midfield if he can build up the tank or perhaps play off the half forward line with rotations through the midfield. Don't give up on Belly yet.

Reserves
Rhys Healey – It was disappointing for Rhys, as he strained a quad. He only played a bit of the first quarter, so he'll be out for a couple of weeks.
Kicks 3, Handballs 6, Marks 2

Liam Jurrah – Liam flashed in-and-out and did some exciting things again. I'd expect on the back of this performance that he'll be ready for a call-up to the senior Casey side.
Kicks 7, Handballs 6, Marks 6, Tackles 1, Assists 3, Goals 2

James Strauss – James played in the backline and had a very good first half. He was one of the best up until half-time and a bit after that. He took a step forward, after an average game last week, so he rebounded strongly. His good game will help his chances of being promoted to the Casey seniors.
Kicks 16, Handballs 20, Marks 9, Tackles 4

Jake Spencer – Jake was very good in the first half. His play around the ground and work at ground-level was also very good. He slowed up a little bit after half-time, as he's missed a bit of footy recently. Jake is another who is probably ready for a senior recall.
Kicks 7, Handballs 11, Marks 5, Tackles 1, Assists 1

Paul Wheatley – Paul was excellent. He played his first game for the season and was excellent. He played half a game and showed all of his class and composure. He played mostly in the back half. He kicked the ball well, but now just needs to get his game-time and fitness up. I'm sure he'll be ready for an AFL recall in the not too distant future.

Trent Zomer – Trent played in the forward line this week. We've moved him around a bit, because we're trying to get a rounded game from him. He did a reasonable job, which was good, because he's under the microscope each week, with his position on the list. We're just looking for him to play with some urgency and he did that this week.
Kicks 10, Handballs 2, Marks 5, Tackles 4, Assists 6, Goals 1

Very impressive from Rhys Healey if he only played a bit of the first quarter and racked up 9 possessions, bad luck to him for the quad injury had been playing well in recent weeks.

Seems like Straussy killed it with 36 possessions, hopefully he can get a gig in the Casey seniors and play some solid games and push for AFL selection.

Don't care how Wheatley played, his position in the team has been covered and improved on.

Lots of good news from Casey this week.

Very positive with most of the reserves players excluding Zomer, who is playing a different position each week which is obviously affecting his performance and Rhys who is injured pushing for the 1's at casey.

Abit disapointed in Bail so far this year, i hope he can start to consolidate a position on a wing and push for selection. Good to see Jamar dominating bring him in this week and hopefully Spencer moves to the 1's to keep the pressure on Jamar and Johnson.

Looks like we need/do we have a Goal Kicking Coach??????

Miller has kicked 11.12 this year and Bate 6.6

I think Bail should get back to playing on a wing, I don't see him as a defender.

Bell was named as second BOG but that doesn't stack up with German's comments.

Good to see all the guys in the 2's besides Zomer (and the injured Healey) dominate 2's. You wont last long on an AFL list if you can't do that (Weetra).

Mark Jamar – He played really well. He finished with 25 disposals, was mobile and other than a few ruck infringements, I was very pleased with his game.
Kicks 13, Handballs 12, Marks 12, Tackles 1, Assists 5, Goals 1

Wow... I can't wait to see if he can reproduce this form back at AFL level. Compared to- well, every game involving Jamar up to this point, that's impressive.

Hey guys, first post.

Sorry to burst the bubble though myself and two mates saw the last 2 and a half quarters of the Casey seniors. Jamar was shaded in the second half by the Ballarat big men and the stats do not show how many of his kicks were turn overs.

I would be leaving PJ as lone ruckman at this stage as Jamar doesn't deserve a spot over our younger players who are coming along nicely. Didn't even looked like he cared.

Th other thing of note was the kicking ability of Watts. When we came in just before half time Watts got the ball on back flank and pin pointed a 45m + pass that hit the lead up forward on the chest. Best bit is he repeated this a couple of times later in the match

agreed i was at the match also and your right jamars kicking was terrible couldnt hit the side of a barn and jack watts kicking is superb was my highlight of the day

Hey Festa interested to know your view on Dunn, we thought even in the VFL he didn't look like a mid. Was hoping to see him play forward.

Solid debut should be pushing for more posts throughout the year.:thumbsu:

Without seing Jamar's game i think he should push for senior selection soon as we need two ruckman in the team i wouldn;t want to risk Martin getting injured in the ruck.

Good to see straussy hit some form looks to be over his injuries and should push for senior casey selection this week!

From the afl web site

IT REMAINS unclear when last year's No.1 NAB AFL Draft choice Jack Watts will make his debut for Melbourne.

Melbourne coach Dean Bailey was asked on Tuesday if Watts was a chance to play his first game for the Demons on June 8, the club's annual Queen's Birthday clash against Collingwood at the MCG.

But Bailey said form and timing would dictate when Watts plays.

"Jack's game on the weekend was okay [for Casey Scorpions]. He'll get another game this weekend at VFL level and if he plays well, then we'll consider him," Bailey said at the Junction Oval.

"He's a very busy man, Jack, he's got a lot of things going on in his life, let me tell you.

"The challenge for Jack is just to get some consistency and to manage his time, which he's doing really well and hopefully he'll play well in the VFL this weekend.

"That'll put some pressure on us, not just for the following week, but for the weeks after that … when he's ready, we'll pick him and when that time comes, we'll let you know."

Casey Scorpions coach Peter German told melbournefc.com.au that Watts, who had 22 disposals and took seven marks against North Ballarat, was encouraging last weekend.

"Although his preparation has been a little bit behind the rest of the group, he was very good," German said.

"We pushed him up into the midfield and he showed poise, steadiness and composure in tight situations.

"He's still developing and the next phase for him is to take marks and kick some goals up forward. Other than that, he's coming along very well."

And now a little something for the ladies...

I'm dearly hoping the Messiah plays Queens Birthday, fingers crossed he kills it this weekend and forces Baileys hand.

Just out of interest, are either Bail or Strauss very quick? Anyone know their draft camp times? Blease as well for that matter...

Just interested to see whether one or both of these two could be the quick outside mids we have been looking for.

Also hope Hughes gets that kicking straight, he could be quite the talent.

Living on alot of hopes and dreams here, but those are the 4 that i want to blossom, and quickly.

Blease is lightning quick.

Not sure about the others.

Hey Festa interested to know your view on Dunn, we thought even in the VFL he didn't look like a mid. Was hoping to see him play forward.

yea he played ok but its hard with dunn where should he play i would like to see him go forward but as a third or fourth target i honestly dont see him in the melbourne side as a midfielder he wont get a game. the only option is a tagger but bartram does that, i wouldnt be surprised to see him as trade bait at end of year or delisted

Bail has slipped under the radar a bit thus far, heres hoping he can push on and get a game late in the year.

Encouraging to see some of Strauss' stats there, repeat sprints are a more worthy stat than the simple 20 metre sprint so to be ahead of Stephen Hill in particular is a great sign.

Heres hoping Watts has a big game this weekend for Casey, Bailey has left the door open with those comments.

:thumbsu: Thanks moite.

Hopefully Blease and Strauss can develop asap and fix our slow midfield. I think with some speed added it will work well. The 4 slowpokes of McLean, Maloney, Jones, and McDonald getting the ball and feeding to the quicks of Blease, Strauss and Davey on the outside.
