Jumper No:
31
Height: 192cm
Weight: 92kg
D.O.B: 1987-09-29
Previous Clubs: Haileybury College

Edit:

While it might be a few years before the sons of Steve Silvagni and Greg Williams are eligible to pull on the navy blue, there is another Silvagni catching the eye at VFL Level and could be turning out for the Blues as soon as next season. Alex Silvagni, 18, the son of Serge Silvagni's first cousin Eric, is making a name for himself in the Casey Scorpions back line and will be available in this year's national draft. Serge Silvagni is the father of former ace defender Steve Silvagni, which makes Alex & Steve second cousins.
Alex played just his 4th senior game last week against Carlton's VFL affiliate Northern Bullants and was given the task of minding former Kangaroo/Blue Digby Morrell who has become a very dangerous forward for the Bullants.
Silvagni began the match well, but the experienced Morrell took control of the contest in the second half and finished with four goals. Young Alex said he enjoyed the experience despite Morrell running him ragged.
Casey football manager Lachlan Buszard believes that Silvagni has all the right ingredients for success, saying Silvagni is a good reader of the play, throws himself into contests, and has excellent second, third, and even fourth efforts. Other attributes, according to Buszard are his spoiling ability, his size, and pace over the first 10-15 meters.
Unfortunately, his efforts were not enough to stop the Bullants who won by 8 goals with Carlton senior players Ian Prendergast and David Teague putting in solid performances.

Can we piece together any hints as to who may be playing for the Saints against Collingwood.
Did Fiora play? Gehrig didn't, does that mean he will be in against the Pies?
What do you think?
Were any of the Saints players rested , ( is that why Allen didn't score much )?

Player Report :
Jarryd Allen - struggled to get into the game. kicked poorly. won't get a Saints gig on that performance.
McEvoy - not ready yet imo, but looks athletic and got around the ground. Will be a good player.
Fergie - obviously put his hand up with 7.5, but played from behind a fair bit and dropped marks he would need to take at AFL level. Should have kicked over 10 goals with the opportunities he had. But looks comfortable kicking for goal and gives it everything.
Jumping Jack Steven - hadn't really seen him before (aside from winning goal v Geelong), but if there is ever a clone of Milne coming through the ranks it is Steven. Quick and opportunistic. The steal and long goal in the last quarter was a Bruce McAvaney "special".
Blake - played as ruck-rover and absolutely dominated. BOG for mine.
Gwilt - solid game but done on the lead a few times. Still too slow/short for AFL, but precise long kicking was a feature in this game.
Fish - OK, playing on ball / centre.
Geary - very prominent off half back.
Rix - very good. took a hanger against three opponents when at FF, and kicked the goal on the angle. A number of crunching tackles, and nailed Ackland in one of them. Solid ruckwork against Ackland/Hampson (Hampson is bloody quick for 200cm and will be an excellent player in years to come).
Fiora - flashy good and flashy bad unfortunately. Had an opportunity to back into a marking contest but pulled out and allowed the Bullant to mark unopposed. Also two bad turnovers. Having said this, he would have had plenty of ball.
CJ - no idea how he got BOG. Had plenty of bounces with the ball which was great but kicking and handball skills were quite ordinary.
Howard - flashed in and out of the game. Puts his head over it and is obviously quick. Just needs to read the game better.
Mini - got it enough, but didn't hurt the opposition at all.
John Beveridge - looked like he could have fallen asleep in his deckchair.

Cain Ackland copped a good sledge from the crowd "We miss you ... at Port Adelaide". Cain had a laugh - he copped a fair bit all day.

All Saints players got good game time, with 10 of them getting goals.

So from the sound of things, Fergie, Jones, and Blake are looking good for a game this week, with Geary another good option. Mini could well sneak in. Rix dominated, but hey we've all heard that before, and he is quickly becoming the Greame Hick of the St Kilda footy club (besides, my cat could outruck Ackland). Still, he may well get a game if King doesn't pull up, partly on the performance, and partly because we don't want to rush McEvoy.

The exciting thing is the option of Fergie in the goals - sure, he didn't take some marks he should have, but he nailed kicks he should have, which is a FAR, FAR cry from what the rest of our forwards are doing right now. If we can have somebody who for ONCE we can actually not be nervous about taking a set shot directly in front, it would be a nice change.

Last thing it seems needs to be said is that while the win was great, and the performances sound outstanding, and you can only play the opposition you play, etc, etc, the Carlton dregs are not Collingwood. Still, good signs.

Given McEvoy has been named emergency before, he might be closer than I have him. I hope they do not rush him, although Collingwood are not that strong in the ruck. Wouldn't want to see him up against Jamie Charman just yet. Looks good for the future though.

Blake, Rix, Fergie and Gears all look right for a recall. Maybe CJ, but the turnovers hurt more at AFL level.

We have to remember the level they are playing:
For example Rix and Gwilt and Raph usually go good at VFL level,
But with the added pace of AFL they normally don't do so well at all. Ferguson may be the same. He could be good but it could also be that the average AFL side has a defender capable of keeping him out of the game. Worth at try though because looking back at this thread he dosn't seem to have an off day.
It is a worry that Allen could not keep up his form, because, unless he had illness or injury we really need players who play consistantly, especially against an easy team.
I am hoping that the "ins" for Saints are Blake and Geary, and Ferguson. Hopefully King will be back so that Kosi can play forward. (King replace Kosi in ruck, Kosi replace Nick, Ferguson replace Gehrig). I don't really like the idea of a forward line with an Untried Ferguson and an out of form Gehrig.

Some comments from the coach :

St Kilda-listed ruckman Ben McEvoy, who won the Murray Bushrangers' best-and-fairest last year, again put his hand up for senior selection with an eye-catching 14-possession display that impressed coach Greg Hutchison.

"If he keeps playing like he did today, he's not going to be far away (from making his AFL debut)," Hutchison said.

Hutchison was also impressed with Ferguson, playing in his new role as a leading forward.

"He leads well, he's a good mark. He probably should have kicked another four or five because he missed some easy ones. I hope he gets the opportunity at AFL level again soon. If the door opens, he's going to be a chance," he said.

Blake - 26 possessions
Leigh F - 25
Mini - 24
Fiora 22

Note : the Scorpions are this week's feature game on the ABC v Collingwood (1pm Saturday).

Should be recalled this week with X.Clarke out and Baker possibly out, if not very very stiff.

Bullants coach apologises to defence
Herald Sun SuperFooty
Chris Mitchell | May 12, 2008 12:00am

NORTHERN Bullants playing coach David Teague said he felt sorry for his defenders after yesterday's 118-point capitulation to Casey Scorpions at Casey Fields. A dejected Teague admitted his side had left its defence high and dry in the 25.14 (164) to 6.10 (46) loss, saying the Bullants had paid a hefty price for a lack of midfield pressure.

Led by a seven-goal haul from St Kilda-listed Matthew Ferguson and a 32-possession best-afield performance by Clinton Jones, the Scorpions led by 25 points at quarter-time and by 76 at the main break.

The Bullants kicked their first goal at the 26-minute mark of the second quarter.

The Scorpions had 14 goalkickers, but it was Jones, Leigh Fisher (25 disposals) and St Kilda rookie Andrew McQualter (24 disposals) who led the midfield dominance.

Ferguson was damaging as a deep forward with 14 kicks and seven handballs, Jason Blake was dominant around the ground with 26 possessions and Aaron Fiora had 22 touches in a variety of roles.

Adam Iacobucci, with 27 disposals, tried hard for the Bullants, while youngster Joe Anderson also impressed.

The win lifted Casey to third on the ladder, while the Bullants drop to 10th.

"It was obviously very disappointing. Casey got off to a good start," Teague said.

"They had a few bigger bodies in there. Leigh Fisher, Blake and Jones were probably a bit stronger than us and they just busted through us, broke our tackles and got the ball forward.

"To be honest, I felt sorry for some of our defenders. The ball was coming in fast. Some blokes left their mates under the pump more than they should have."

Teague said he was finding it tough to combine his on-field coaching role with trying to get a kick himself, but he said the help from assistant coach Matthew Lappin (24 disposals) was invaluable.

"When things are working, it's not so bad," he said.

"The biggest challenge is being able to communicate with the box. The runners come out to me a fair bit. I've just got to make sure I'm getting a kick myself.

"Matty's been good all year. He's got such a great football brain and then on the field he uses the ball well and rallies the troops."

St Kilda-listed ruckman Ben McEvoy, who won the Murray Bushrangers' best-and-fairest last year, again put his hand up for senior selection with an eye-catching 14-possession display that impressed coach Greg Hutchison.

In yesterday's other game, Williamstown pulled away from Sandringham to win by 64 points at Burbank Oval.

Led by Ben Jolley and Western Bulldogs Callan Ward, Peter Street and Wayde Skipper, the Seagulls booted seven goals to one in the last quarter to win 19.16 (130) to 9.12 (66).

Sandringham coach Andy Lovell said Williamstown deserved to win.

"It was a big test against the form team of the competition and we failed miserably," he said.

"If you are not 100 per cent intense with everything you do, you pay the price."

On Saturday, Richmond midfielder Mark Coughlan returned from knee injury to help a star-studded Coburg Tigers line-up defeat Collingwood by 53 points. Coughlan played just over half a game and came through unscathed.

In other games, Bendigo had its second win this season, defeating Frankston by three points at Queen Elizabeth Oval; Geelong had a narrow 14-point win against Box Hill at Box Hill City Oval; North Ballarat beat Tasmania by 49 points at home; and Werribee had a spirited 15-point win against Port Melbourne at Chirnside Park.

You made some terrific points. I totally agree with everything here.

These are the lines that most interested me. This is the way we should be playing.
