Wait a minutes, just noticed Armitage was named ruck rover. Surely he wouldn't be dropped for the Carlton game?

Another report of last weeks game from the local news. The story has a picture of McEvoy up against Bellchambers. ( There was also a picture of Khan playing, in the actual printed news.)

THERE was nothing spectacular about the Casey Scorpions’ ninth win of the season, but Sunday’s success spoke volumes about how far the club has come.

Pitted against the Bendigo Bombers in brutally cold and windy conditions at Casey Fields, it was not until the four-minute mark of the final quarter that the Scorpions finally shook the visitors.

The 29-point victory – Casey’s seventh from as many games at home – maintained its hold on second spot ahead of its top-of-the-table clash with Williamstown this weekend. If the Scorpions can triumph against the Seagulls, they will leapfrog their opponents into first place.

Captain Kyle Matthews (left foot) and lion-hearted ruckman Michael Rix (concussion) both missed the Bendigo fixture after separate incidents in the previous round against Coburg.

Matthews declared himself a certain starter for the Williamstown encounter after the match, and Rix is likely to join him.

But there were no shortage of allies willing to shoulder the load for Casey.

Teenage star Ben McEvoy rucked one-out for most of the day, with under-sized key forward Ben Waite spelling him in short spurts.

Waite, in his best individual display for the club, took a host of contested marks in attack and laid a number of ferocious tackles to make his presence known.

Another impressive performer was rookie-listed Saint Luke Miles, who grows in confidence every week.

The 186-centimetre Miles plays well above his height and is as assured down back as up forward.

Scorpion Raphael Clarke took more than eight minutes to post the game’s first point and another four minutes for its opening goal.

The Bombers failed to score in the first term, but it wasn’t until late goals to Brad Howard and Evan Panozza that Casey could be pleased with its output.

Bendigo peppered the wind-assisted Tooradin end in the second quarter and four goals in nine minutes saw the Scorpions’ 30-point quarter-time margin slashed to one.

Leigh Fisher – who joined Shane Birss in terrorising the Bombers at the stoppages all afternoon – stopped the bleeding by slotting a goal on the run before Bendigo hard man Brent Hartigan cut the lead back again on the stroke of half-time.

Majors to Fisher and Aaron Fiora in the opening minutes after the long break then stretched the buffer to 13.

Casey spent the rest of the term struggling to stamp its authority on the contest and went into three-quarter time with a 21-point advantage.

With the Bombers kicking with the wind in the final term, the match looked set to be a race to the finish.

But Waite and Chris Dunne put paid to that with a goal apiece to all but seal the result.

Ultimately, the Scorpions went inside 50 metres a stunning 17 times in the fourth quarter to snuff out Bendigo’s hopes.

The only lowlight for Casey was a serious right ankle injury to Panozza midway through the last term.

Casey coach Greg Hutchison was thrilled to post a fourth straight win and described his team’s final quarter as “a very significant effort”.

“The conditions were really bad, but we managed them well and worked hard at the end,” he said.

“It was the first time we’ve been challenged in a while.”

The Scorpions and Williamstown meet at Burbank Oval on Sunday at 2pm.

Will be interesting to see how Miles goes..

He seems to be going well after missing a lot of the year injured.

A significant breeze has favoured Willy in the first and third quarters, we had it in the second and now we should come home with the breeze.

Currently just before 3/4 time, margin 10 points in Willy's favour.

Should be a ripper of a final quarter

What a shocker of a radio station.

It cuts the transmission of the Casey match in the final minutes - to broadcast some junk ice hockey crap.

Sadly I need someone to post the final results please.

When it cut out Casey had scored two unanswered goals after Willy had scooted away and looked likely to win. Casey had the momentum and it was getting quite exciting.

Thanks - junk radio

Damn :(

Willy scored 4.7 in the last quarter, into a 5-6 goal wind? Must have died down I guess.

Fisher and Geary were BOG.

Bakes killed it to half time.

Miles was in Bests again.

Birss was good and got a great goal from 45 into the wind.

Armo was rested in the last quarter, looks likely to play against the Blues on Friday.

Eddy played a full game, so I'm guessing he may be dropped for Hayes.

Couldn't get on to do updates, ended up seein a movie with some mates. :O

Scorpions Stung

AN injury to Alex Silvagni and the resting of David Armitage in the final quarter were hurdles to Casey's bid to defeat Williamstown in their top-of-the-table Round 13 VFL clash at Burbank Oval on Sunday.
The Scorpions were within 10 points at the last change and were finishing off with the wind. But two things conspired against them in a 16-point loss that stopped their streak of seven consecutive wins.
Ace defender Alex Silvagni rolled his ankle a tick before the three-quarter-time siren. It meant coach Greg Hutchison had to send Matt Ferguson to the backline, denying the team a strong target in attack.
They were missing Ben Waite, who was overseas on business, and Ben McEvoy was having a pig of a day. Armitage was on limited game time because he is in St Kilda's squad for this Friday night's game against Carlton, and he was kept out of the last quarter (Rob Eddy was also on limited time and did not play in the first term).
With his bench down to two rotation options, Hutchison declared this was ``a fair-dinkum big test''. Within the first two minutes classy Chris Dunne kicked the first of his two goals for the quarter and it seemed another gritty win was going to develop in front of 1000 Willy supporters. But the next 20 minutes brought a Seagull spree of 10 shots at goal, returning three majors.
``In the end you could kick goals at both ends,'' Hutchison said after the game.``We missed a few in the third quarter (scoreboard end), and they worked harder in the last.''Hutchison was pleased the team kicked three goals in time-on, one from ruckman Michael Rix, another from Dunne and then Ferguson, sent forward again, to get the deficit back to 10 points.A couple of 50-50 frees went Williamstown's way in the centre and it ran the ball down to confirm the result. ``We could have been blown away,'' Hutchison said.
Jarryn Geary had 21 possessions, kicked three goals and applied six tackles to be Casey's best player. Aaron Fiora (21 disposals), Dunne, Leigh Fisher, Jimmy Taylor and James Wall, who put clamps on Jason Cloke, were also good contributors.
Taylor tailed Pat Rose in the second half. Looking to Saturday's match against Tasmania at Casy Fields on Saturday, Hutchison said: ``It's a short turnaround and we had a disappointing loss to them a few round ago. We've got to turn that around.''The Scorpions will be without Silvagni and Evan Panozza, who was injured in last week's match against Bendigo.
They may give a debut to Gareth Snow, a tall youngster who won a league medal in the VAFA last season with Old Mentonians.

Was Charlie who kicked the goals.

Geary is going along very nicely, just needs to build a bit of muscle and what the hell does Birss need to do to even be considered?
Schneider making a move to the midfield? Could be a smart move.

Just got back from Antartica - not warm down at Cranbourne.

After Casey kicked three goals early (I missed the first two) Tassie played well and with a four goal wind were "in front" at quarter time. They continued on in the second with lots of long kicks to a contest and crumbing. Gears was our mainstay in the first half and had heaps of it.

But Casey just went nuts with the wind in the third and Birss kicked his three goals in the space on 10 mins. Was just on fire all over the ground - tackles, marks, great field kicks, and never looked like missing in front of the sticks. Gardiner dominated the taps and Fiora (in particular) and Schneider had a great quarter.

Tassie should have still thought they had some chance with the breeze in the last, but they didn't and there was a massive 3/4 time brawl. It was a ripper. Birss was screaming at Bakes to finish up, but I think the Bakerdog enjoyed the fight more than anything - I have a feeling he is still carrying the knee and is some way off.

A number of the Saints boys showed their support (under their hoodies).

Going to thaw out and will then comment on each Saints player.

Fisher - solid all day again.
McEvoy - struggled a little but did some good things in the air (no so much in the ruck).
Birss - great game.
Fiora - coughed the ball up in the first half but huge third quarter. Seemed like he had about 15 possessions and was breaking through tackles regularly.
Gardiner M - dominated but spent plenty of time on the bench getting worked on.
Gardiner C - urrrgghhhhh.
Baker - looked injured but played out the game. Did well in the fight.
Rix - not his best game, but pretty good.
Ferguson - couldn't get into the game. Got sent into defence.
Clarke R - poor game.
Schneider - worked into the game. Got it a fair bit.
Geary - excellent in the first 3 quarters. Missed some shots for goal yoúd like him to kick but hard to fault his workrate.

Got asked by the photographer for the Hobart Mercury whether I will keep following Casey next year ... Pffffttttt  ... there's me standing there with my Saints jacket and hat. Actually I don't mind some of the Casey players.
