There is a lot of emotional energy spent on Shane Birss, considering that most of those who want him in the team would probably acknowledge that he's in the 18-22 bracket of players, at best. The only thing that I think he adds to the team is his sharp-shooting. Other than that, he's just a good honest player. Nothing wrong with that, but I'll go with the coach's decision not to play him.

I thought Birss was close to out top 10 best players before he got dropped. Would be interesting to see where he ends up in the B & F count at that point in the year.

Then explian how Charlie Gardiner and Aaron Fiora add more to the team then Birss? These two seem to get more oppourtunties at senior level than Birss, even though they have not performed anywhere near as well as Birss in the VFL.

Needs a chance. You can not ignore a player who produces several BOG performances with Casey. I have a sad feeling he will get delisted at years end.

Birss tends to play exclusively as a small forward. Currently, he's behind Milne, Schneider and Jones in that role. In addition, Jones goes onto the ball. As a taller marking option in the forward line, Gardiner is ahead of Birss. Fiora is an on-baller. Fiora ahead of Birss as an on-baller. Maybe Birss should be given a chance as an onballer, but I'd put him behind Hayes, Ball, Dal, Jones, Joey, Eddy, Gram and Goddard, plus Armitage and X Clarke to name a few. I'm not saying he's a dud but there is absolutely no way he's in our 10 best players and he struggles to be in our best 22.

St Kilda ruckman Ben McEvoy yesterday mounted a case for a second AFL game after a dominant display for Casey Scorpions in the VFL.
The 200cm, 95kg giant from Dederang-Mt Beauty, pick No. 9 in last year's draft, was best afield in the Scorpions' 36-point win against Frankston at Frankston Oval.
McEvoy, 19, had 19 possessions and marked strongly playing as Casey's only designated ruckman.
Casey coach Greg Hutchison said the dry conditions suited McEvoy, who made his AFL debut in Round 13, and is sure to come under consideration for Sunday's clash against Adelaide at Telstra Dome.
"I thought it was a terrific effort by him today," Hutchison said.
"Over the last month we've had three ruckman, today we had one.

"The last three weeks it's been pretty ordinary conditions for big fellas. Today, Ben's ability to work at the contest and get involved was really good. He had good second efforts and he marked the ball cleanly."
Saints midfielder Shane Birss also continued his outstanding VFL form, with 40 possessions.
Birss and David Armitage's 18 touches helped Casey establish a 44-point quarter-time lead.
Hutchison said Birss, 25, who has played six games for the Saints this season, was close to an AFL recall.
"He's a terrific player and he works hard at it," he said.
"He's just got to hope the opportunity comes his way. He does a really good job at this level and I've got no doubt he can do the same thing at the next level."

Saints utility Xavier Clarke also played well on a wing and across half-forward to finish with 26 disposals, while defenders James Wall and Brad Howard were also prominent.
The fourth-placed Scorpions are likely to get Alex Silvagni back from a bruised sternum for the last round against Collingwood.

McGrath is our 208cm scholarship prospect? Assume he is - good to see the two big lads (Ooh-Aah and Harry) coming along.

Interesting that although we played Frankston (stand alone which I think limits us to 12 StK-aligned players) we only played 11 :
Xavier Clarke
Luke Miles
Jack Steven
Ben McEvoy
Jarryn Geary
David Armitage
Shane Birss
Brad Howard
Leigh Fisher
Glenn Chivers
Jarryd Allen

No Baker or Gardiner (noting Ferguson and Rix were in Perth).

Miles and Chivers are now back playing.

Great win by the Scorps, considering this and injuries to Attard, Gehrig, and Goose.

Awesome, I'll finally get to see Birss play again :thumbsu:

Does anyone know the story with MG? Baker is injured obviously, but Gardiner isn't from what I've heard?

Unfortunately (with the Saints approach to injury disclosure) I think we might have to wait for the teams.

We were restricted with the Frankston game due to VFL rules so maybe he was rested.

If injured, it can't be too bad as he was spotted having a beer with Fraser!!!

Back In Business

The Casey Scorpions steadied their season after three straight losses with a spirited 36-point win over Frankston in their Round 18 VFL clash at Kars St on Sunday.
The Scorpions were ****-a-hoop after beating their arch rivals, the win putting a top-four berth within their grasp.
As Frankston slept-walked through the first quarter, the Scorpions busily went about building a match-winning lead. After 30 minutes, the Scorpions led 8.3 to 1.1.

Frankston eventually awoke _ some stern words from coach Brett Lovett at quarter-time did the trick _ but the damage was done.
Frankston's tardy start was unusual. The Dolphins this season have been dynamic early; the stats show they are the third-best first-quarter team in the VFL.

But they looked sluggish as the Scorpions sparkled. When tall Jarryd Allen booted the opening goal of the second term, the visitors surged 50 points ahead. The trumpeters on the hill urged Frankston to fire up and they did, booting the next four goals of the term to cut the margin to 19 points by half-time.
But the Dolphins' charge was quickly extinguished in the opening six minutes of the third quarter with goals by Xav Clarke (on the run from 50m), Leigh Fisher and Allen. The Scorpions' lead was back out to 37 points, and Shane Birss, Jarryn Geary, Kyle Matthews, James Wall and James Taylor were up and running.
Birss was best-afield with 40 possessions, again raising his hand for promotion. Wall zoned off like Tom Harley, picking off 13 marks, and Xav Clarke kicked three goals and had 26 disposals.
The Scorpions gave a debut to tall former Tasmanian Tim Mohr and he was handy with 10 possessions as a back-up to dominant ruckman Ben McEvoy. The fourth-placed Scorps can cement the double chance when they host Coburg on Saturday in the ABC televised match.

Casey Scorpions 8.3, 9.4, 13.8, 16.10 (106) d Frankston 1.1, 5.9, 7.9, 10.10 (70).
Goals: Casey Scorpions: Allen 3, Clarke 3, Dunne 2, Matthews 2, Fisher 2, Garrubba, Parker, Armitage, Howard. Frankston: Berry 3, Dore 2, Lourey 2, Proctor, Kennedy, Limbach.
Best: Casey Scorpions: Birss, Clarke, Wall, Taylor, Allen, O'Bryan. Frankston: Gabriel, Lourey, Raso, Berry, Dunne, Magner.

$1000 Leader player-of-the-year award (votes by football manager Craig Lees): 3 Shane Birss, 2 James Wall, 1 Xav Clarke.

Progressive: 17 Birss, 9 Silvagni, Rix, 7 Armitage, Gwilt, McQualter, 6 Clarke, Jones, 6 Wall, 5 Matthews, Geary, 4 Gardiner, 3 Ferguson, R Clarke, 2 Steven, Taylor, Dunne, Fisher, Milne, Armitage, McEvoy, Allen, 1 X Clarke, Panozza, Howard.

Birssy is absolutely tearing it up.

McGrath is our 208cm scholarship prospect? Assume he is - good to see the two big lads (Ooh-Aah and Harry) coming along.

That aint him. Thats Pat McGrath. Pretty sure Scholarship holders stay and play in NSW until they're drafted.

"I said Ooh Aah Blake McGrath, I said that's not Blake McGrath!!!" :o

I suppose I'll have to console myself with Macca's return to form.

Thanks for the report. :thumbsu:

Lets hope he makes it, always loved that chant. :thumbsu:

Saint Ben McEvoy stands up Casey

Haha, I asked the same thing about 2 weeks ago. Shame, would be good if he was already killing it in Casey.

Our scholarship players look alright, Josh Duncan I think? Only 16 and apparently one of the best for NSW/ACT.

Did Jack play on the weekend?

No - I wouldn't have let him go, but think the Saints have moved on. Had a good year, although not overly nimble sideways (not surprising given his height but important at AFL level where they will nip around you in a heartbeat if you are slowish).

Silvagni though .... hmmm (think he'll get looked at given his improvement this year).

A lot will depend on where Goose is at. If he is to return and if Max is to play on, we may punt with other (younger) rookies.

Gilbo will improve over time, and hopefully Miles will get there - he's a real dasher.

***Edit: That old team sheet was wrong. Fixed Now***

Damn. No silvagni. :(

I take it Eddy and Gardiner will be the outs then if the 3 ins play.

Look forward to seeing this one, haven't seen the Scorps since that shocking game at some suburban oval where from memory there was either a really low score, lots of behinds and no goals scored at the one end or both. Anyway I'll be paying particular attention to Big Ben, Stevo and COSOS (he's SOS's cousin right?)
